A little girl called Lettuce-Loveday. It was actually really sweet and suited her!

For boys I met a Cronson and Pendree (not related to each other)

I went to school with a girl called Tia-Maria and she had a brother called Bailey. Rumour was the mum was a raging alcoholic but not sure wether that was true or not ...

FriedEggChocolate · 04/07/2023 09:16

Siouxie, presumably her parents named her after the singer. She'd be mid-20s now. I thought it was fab, but then I'm older than her so knew of the singer, and I don't have to spell it over the phone every time I say my name is Susie.

Pedantic, maybe, but not entirely correct. Welsh is derived from Brittonic, and is the oldest modern indigenous language spoken in these isles. Few English words come from it.

Not someone I know but when I was Googling about the Mayflower, I came across the names of Mary Brewster’s children.

Jonathan, Love, Fear, Wrestling

Jonathan’s wife was called Lucretia

FarmGirl78 · 04/07/2023 09:19

Walking past a supermarket carpark about 10 years ago and heard a very chav mother screeching at her Daughter "You get yourself here now Jazzledine!". Was too stunned to laugh. Jazzledine. Utterly horric name.

FriedEggChocolate · 04/07/2023 09:19

Vashti. I thought it was Indian, from its sound, but then I saw it in a Thomas Hardy (from memory I think she's a bridesmaid in "under the greenwood tree") so I guess it's an older English name.

I know a little Loveday too. Not one I'd choose but it suits her. I think it's Cornish.

Lucretia sounds like something you'd need a prescription to clear up.

Vashti is King Ahasuerus's first wife in the Book of Esther, so has been used in the UK for centuries by people who like fancy biblical names.

FriedEggChocolate · 04/07/2023 09:26

@DaisyWaldron I didn't realise it was biblical. Thank you for the background. She's the only one I've ever come across.

Clarich007 · 04/07/2023 09:26

A boy at school was called St John (Singen) Threadgold.
Sounds like something from Lord of the Rings.

Robyn847 · 04/07/2023 09:27

Oh just remembered. The nurse on the ward when my Grandfather passed away was called Cinderella. Which provoked the unavoidable "Yeah right, whats she REALLY called?" from my Mother, when the poor girl was stood right next to her.
