A colleague who had a very one-sided relationship with his turf accountant told me confidentially that if 30,000 people regularly used those numbers, they must know something and that he was going to start copying them.

That reminds me of back when the lottery first began, for a few years, the tabloids had regular 'features' telling you what the 'hot' numbers were.

Now, on the BBC show itself, Alan Deddicoat would say things like "And 32 has been drawn 9 times this year" - mainly just for some pointless filler to cover the otherwise-awkward silence.

But these papers would actually try to convince their readers that these 'hot' numbers, that had already come up (entirely by chance, of course), were thus the most likely to come up again! Desperate isn't even the word!!

Knew someone who surname was Bollock. Married into it or otherwise... I would be looking up how to change by deed poll.

I remember, many years ago now, seeing a man in the 'in the courts' section of a newspaper, whose surname was Bastard. Armed robbery, I think he was convicted of. That's nominative determinism for you, I suppose!

CoraDora · 07/07/2023 07:13

A girl called Hong Kong, her dad wanted to name her after where she was born.

I remember watching CBeebied birthdays years ago and there was a card for twin boys called Success and Victory.

What a beautiful name Endellion is!

I am a teacher and have come across many weird and wonderful names, but I don’t want to out myself to colleagues.

I met a woman called Xochitl once.

Xochitl is a very common name in Mexico, it means flower. Another lovely Mexican name, this time for men, is Tonatiuh

MortgageConundrum · 07/07/2023 18:57

I know a family whose surname is 'Raper' I always felt bad for them to have to go through life bearing a name with such negative connotations.

So do I! Really nice family too.

I had the misfortune to be on a job in America, doing a seabed survey, on a ship. In the office, there was an exceptionally stupid woman called La Tondra. She asked me for some details about part of the job, so I gave her a clear, concise summary of each of her points.

She emailed me back and said that I hadn't said anything about X,Y & Z, so I pointed her to each and every relevant paragraph. She signed off her complaint with "And it aint wrote real good."

I had to take some seabed samples to the office, where, sadly, I met her. She introduce herself and said, "I bet ya'll thought I was a n*er, dintcha?"

I know a “Breeze”, a “strawberry” (whose brother is called “stone”) and my little baby granddaughter is called “River”. Love unique, quirky names 😊.

Sweetpea1532 · 08/07/2023 02:49

@MortgageConundrum Do you live in the southern part of the US?
The family I knew was from the South...2 lovely teenage boys, and a mum and dad. I met them at a church meeting.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 08/07/2023 05:39

I used to know a woman (a long time ago) who had a very unremarkable name, but she had siblings called Daxon and Jademma.

Caradonna · 08/07/2023 06:32

Grizel - from the early 1900s, the name of a lady who lived in a neighbouring house, seems it comes from German.

Trainsplanesandfeet · 08/07/2023 06:52

My sister’s son had a child in his class called Tasty-Lee.

Work in education so heard some crackers:-

nevaeh.

T-J.
D-J
Teddy (actual name on birth certificate)
indiana (girl)
Tuppence
Lily-Roo.
Felix
Junior Junior.

There are others but they are current pupils.

I have a TJ! They’re just his initials though-he has a perfectly normal if a little old fashioned first name for adulthood if he wishes to use it. (Although he’s 15 and still using TJ).

My youngest DS goes to school with a Liberty (boy). Which is about the most different name I’ve come across. My ex best friend called her daughter Princess which is just tacky imo.

MortgageConundrum · 08/07/2023 09:44

@Sweetpea1532 no, I live in the south of England (as do the family)

lookingforMolly · 09/07/2023 09:05

@SomersetDreams
I know a Venecia who is half Iranian, she likes to be known as V which is a shame as I think it's a very pretty name.
