Thanks, Agapornis - interesting.

I think you're probably right that it was a corruption of a Dutch name that English-speakers just couldn't grasp. Either that or a nickname, because he was very bouncy, energetic and high (on life, not anything else!) He was also a singer, so he probably found it easier in English-speaking countries to go by a name that the audience would remember and could pronounce.

Shyella

I used to go to school with a Shyella!

@isthismylifenow I just wanted to take a moment to let you know I've really enjoyed your input on this thread.

This post "I have yet to meet an unhappy Ntokozo. Beautiful name." especially made me smile 🥰

I once knew a young lad called (what sounded like) Fuzzy - I only heard it, so it may well not have been spelled that way.

For some reason, I remembered his (not remarkable) surname, so I just looked up his name and found him - still in the same small town. It's actually spelled Fuzi.

Moonlightdust · 03/07/2023 22:08

Surprised Phoenix and Talulah are on this list - I’ve come across many of them IRL!

Fox
2 girls called Honey
Bliss
Pebbles

I know of a Hunnie

Also a Misty-Leanne

Caspian and Ophelia probably the most unusual names that I didn't immediately judge (internally and secretly)

Agapornis · 03/07/2023 22:12

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper there's a Dutch band called Kyteman Orchestra led by this guy, if it happens to be him? Amusingly his real name is Colin Grin

My brother was at school with a Sossity. Apparently named after the Jethro Tull song. Poor lass was called sausage by everyone.

A girl named Nettles and a different girl called Sesame.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 22:20

Haha, thanks, Agapornis, but it's definitely not our Colin! The music genre is completely different, the Kite I knew definitely spelled it with an 'i' and - the clincher - 'my' chap would have been at least 30 when I met him in the early/mid 90s and (if Wikipedia is correct on his age) Colin would still have been at (the Dutch equivalent of) primary school then!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 22:21

Ripley - little girl

Nah, I don't believe that... or do I...?! Grin

Onlinetherapist · 03/07/2023 22:22

Boy at dc's school called Pride
Middle dc met a kid called Sprite at a summer club thing they are doing this year

sugarapplelane · 03/07/2023 22:23

Livinus is the most unusual name of a person I’ve met. I assume his parents were very religious
There was a girl called Phaedra at my Sixth Form which I’ve always loved
I also know a fortune and a comfort
L’ren is the worst name - why?????

GarlicGrace · 03/07/2023 22:24

Ketzele · 03/07/2023 20:59

Good grief, what were they thinking? Maybe they were drunk and sad ...

I once served a customer called Richenda. I commented that her name was unusual and she said it was a combo of her parents Richard and Brenda! Anyway I thought it was nice and so unusual.

BMIwoes · 03/07/2023 22:24

Berwyck. Also Calliope and Hedley. None of them knew each other.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 22:27

Or they first met in the capital of Lithuania and liked anagrams!

Mindovermatter247 · 03/07/2023 22:27

Not me rushing to see if DS name is on here 🤓😅

I know a lad called helix, he’s a little shit but still a pretty unusual name.

I'm sure there's a (female) CofE minister who used to be on Sunday telly a lot called Richenda (can't remember her surname).

BlackeyedSusan · 03/07/2023 22:29

Unusual in the UK, Mercedes.
(Middle name)

Portia

Dd's formal name is quite rare in her birth year but not exceptionally so. (Double figures but we've only ever met one randomly on holiday)
