What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Rubber gloves work too! I thought my mum had finally lost the plot when I found her stroking the sofa wearing marigolds and muttering about the cat 🤣

A squeegee works too.

@GeriatricMumma

'W' is the only letter of the alphabet which is pronounced using its actual letter.

Sorry, not sure what this means?

Say the letter W out loud,

It is double U as opposed to 'W'

Now think of every other letter of the alphabet - all pronounced correctly with their actual letter

Wubbleyoo? I really don’t get this…,

and what about Dee etc?

They missed out 'not'. This is Mumsnet, remember! But what about 'eh' for A? Or 'Kew' for Q? Or 'Ah' for R in non-rhotic places? Or 'yew' for U? or 'eks' for X?

@WaitingForSunnyDays 20 plate Kia. Indicator not on petrol gauge side. 17 plate ford it was.

I drive a 20 plate Kia for work and the arrow definitely points towards the side the gauge is, how strange.

Don't know how accurate it is but all my friends and I had it in common...

Every woman has a freckle in the same place on her forearm. Around 3 inches down, right in the middle...

Mine is off centre. What does that mean? Am I not a real woman…??!

Wrist. We are aliens 👽

I was going to reply "no i don't!" looking from the elbow. Then saw from the wrist. Wtf

😂😂

Yep for large quantities of cat hair rubber gloves work a treat (I even have a rubber brush, perfect for where the cat rubs up against the edge of the curtains).

Mine too. Is this how you tell who's a woman??

GeriatricMumma · 28/06/2023 21:17

@LaBefana
Nope you are using words instead of the letter -

Double U - starts with a 'D' not a 'W'

A - starts with a
B - starts with b

Etc

My explaining skills are poor 😂

Ah! So A 'starts with' a. Now I get it. Not.

@LaBefana I'll leave you to mull it over 😂🤣🤔

Had no idea that the neckline on a lot of baby vests and stretch suits is designed to enable you to pull the clothing down the baby's body instead of over the head (in case of poonami!)

Had no idea when DS was little. Literally had to snip a vest off him with nail scissors one day to avoid pulling a pooey outfit over his head.

It took a little longer than I thought but phew, you haven't let me down 😂

HipTightOnions · 28/06/2023 21:25

S doesn't start with S, otherwise it would be "sess".

Similarly "eff" not "feff", "ell" not "lell" etc.

LaBefana · 28/06/2023 21:25

It's been an urban/internet myth since 2019 when someone Tweeted about it. Although it may make for a fun internet debate, there’s actually a fairly simple explanation for why many men and women have a freckle in this location. Freckles are caused by sun exposure, and unlike most of your body, your hands are rarely covered by clothing. It’s also a common spot people skip when applying sunscreen.

DorisElward · 28/06/2023 19:03

There are only three diminished seventh chords. The rest of them are all inversions the same three 🤯

Now that is interesting!

Capitalismwantsyou · 28/06/2023 21:14

Mine too. Is this how you tell who's a woman??

Maybe! A vagina isn’t enough any more. You have to have the special freckle. I might be about to have an identity crisis here. At least we’re in it together!

I think W should be pronounced 'double V', not 'double U'

It is if you're in France 🇫🇷 😀

Barbadossunset · 28/06/2023 21:33

Turn your bedsheets inside out and it's easier to flip on the duvet

I’m being stupid but I don’t understand this.

If you buy tin foil and keep it in the box, there are 2 little punched pieces at each end of the box and if you press them in, it keeps the tin foil roll in place. I found this out a couple of weeks ago reading something on here. Don't know who to credit sorry.

Also, I'm surprised at the amount of people I've spoken to who thought dairy cows lactated naturally - that includes a medical doctor.

Awesome…that has genuinely really impressed me 😊

Sorry, hadn’t read the full thread! I’m still getting over the shock of how many people didn’t know!

Wait what? What are you meant to do with a used tampon?

ive lived 33 years and not known this?!

ThatshallotBaby · 28/06/2023 21:35

If you share your bed with a duvet stealer, you should pull up the overhanging bits of the duvet and sort of heap them on the sides of the bed.
You will never end up with half a triangle again.

I think W should be pronounced 'double V', not 'double U'

Or maybe just "wuh". We don't pronounce M as double N, that would be weird.
