What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Very sad indeed!😁
I don't know if your username is relevant, but you might find it interesting that in Ireland the correct form is haitch. So children will be corrected in school if they say aitch.

Well I'm going by how I was brought up and taught at school, and how the dictionary says it should be pronounced, so obviously I believe I'm correct! I was brought up in an area where the h was usually dropped so we were taught it was important to say aitch. I've never, ever seen or heard anyone saying that the correct pronunciation is with an H, although I agree that many people incorrectly people say it. I note that you make reference to my name and also that Catholics say Haitch and Protestants say Aitch. Don't make assumptions from my name, I'm not either and not Irish!

Well, now you have 😊
The 'correctness' of haitch vs aitch does vary according to area as haitch is considered the standard form in Ireland. It is the pronunciation taught in schools for example.

That's fair enough. I did wonder about Erin.
I didn't mention religion at all though.

I only recently realised that Freddie Flintoff and Andrew Flintoff are the same person. I always assumed it was two brothers!

Yes well in Ireland they say Dis Fillum and Dat Fillum so I don't think quoting the Irish mispronouncation of aitch is something to be prayed in aid here! 😱

There is more than one form of standard English.
Haitch is the standard for both spelling and pronunciation of the letter h in Hiberno-English.

Therefore, haitch is not always a mispronouncation. It depends on the English you speak.

I don't know why 😱is needed when you experience a different type of standard English spoken in a different country @SirQuintusAureliusMaximus?
Your response was very ignorant and insulting.
Do you have the same reaction to Scottish Standard English or to American English?
