What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

'W' is the only letter of the alphabet which is pronounced using its actual letter. I do not understand this one at all Confused

The new random number/letter combos on veg etc instead of dates are dates in disguise.

ie F30 = June 30. A-Jan, b-feb etc

Did you watch Steph's Packed Lunch earlier too?!!!

That's because I missed out an important word and explained it like an absolute idiot 😂

It's the only letter of the alphabet not pronounced using its own letter.

It is double U

Is it the date it's packaged or something else?

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

Nope. That's not true

ChineseFakeaway · 28/06/2023 18:49

I’m sure everyone knows this but I was surprised that a friend didn’t so:

You can freeze milk. You just put it in the freezer in its carton/plastic bottle. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

(I occasionally do it if I’ve bought too much or if we’re going on holidays; put it in the fridge the night you get back and you’ll have fresh milk in the morning.)

Unless you drive my OHs car, I told him this recently as I thought he was in the longer line and making it more awkward for himself. But his is actually on the opposite side 🤣 however totally tracks for most cars.

I keep a corned beef tin key on my keyring to use on supermarket trolleys. I was shown this one day when I did not have a pound coin and a member of staff used one she kept on her just for that purpose.

Did you know many vacuum cleaners have filters too? 😁

As do washing machines.

Lolabear38 · 28/06/2023 19:02

Some good ones here! Thank you everyone.

There are only three diminished seventh chords. The rest of them are all inversions the same three 🤯

Nope. That's not true

All 5 of the cars in our household do.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 28/06/2023 19:11

Lots of tubes that come with a foil seal under the outer lid, like those you get tomato puree or hydrocortisone cream or whatever in, also have a sharp point in the lid. First use - take the outer lid off, turn it upside down, and use the point to pierce the foil.

Took me approx 40 years to learn this.

Kindofcrunchy · 28/06/2023 19:23

I'm surprised at the amount of people I've spoken to who thought dairy cows lactated naturally - that includes a medical doctor

Nope, they have to have babies first - which are then taken from them. Repeat for the next 4-9 years or until the cow is knackered. Pretty bloody depressing.

I think W should be pronounced 'double V', not 'double U'

its what would have been the expiry /use by date. So I bought cucumber with F30 on a few days ago and mushrooms with G03 on today.

scoobycute · 28/06/2023 19:29

Quite a number of people I've spoken to didn't know raisins were dried grapes.

I found out recently that Americans cars don't actually run on "gas" but rather "gasoline" which is the equivalent of petrol/diesel in the UK. 🤦🏼‍♀️

PuppyMonkey · 28/06/2023 19:37

Have we had “don’t flush tampons” yet? Wink

booksandbrooks · 28/06/2023 19:38

There's a bit at the back of your fridge your meant to drain or clean or something. Kept reading about it on TOMM last year but haven't got around to checking out yet Confused It's defo on my to do list but keeps getting bumped.

Coronationstation · 28/06/2023 19:42

Based on a recent mumsnet thread…….tampons should not be flushed down toilets.
the car petrol cap side thing isn’t true for all cars (I’ve tested the theory in a lot of hire cars!)

Sorry, hadn’t read the full thread! I’m still getting over the shock of how many people didn’t know!

WonderingWanda · 28/06/2023 19:44

Did you know that if you put a large dry towel in the tumble with your wet washing it will dry faster?
