What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Well according to Mumsnet you have to change your bedding twice a night but can wear the same pair of jeans for 6 weeks 🤷‍♀️🤣😂

If you buy tin foil and keep it in the box, there are 2 little punched pieces at each end of the box and if you press them in, it keeps the tin foil roll in place. I found this out a couple of weeks ago reading something on here. Don't know who to credit sorry.

Also, I'm surprised at the amount of people I've spoken to who thought dairy cows lactated naturally - that includes a medical doctor.

Yup, those cows have to be made pregnant and have their calves taken away/killed...

I think 'W' should be pronounced 'double V' not 'double U'

It in in French. 😀

PuppyMonkey · 28/06/2023 19:51

Oh yes and don’t get too excited about the tabs on your box of cling film or tin foil. They usually collapse after a few days and are rendered useless.

Bumble84 · 28/06/2023 19:52

You n the same vain as your OP don’t do you know (most) toasters have a removable crumb tray. My DH was absolutely stunned by this!

Another very useful thing to know! Thanks!

Sorry but this one not true, my petrol gauge on opposite side to my fuel cap🤷‍♀️

Crikeyalmightey · 28/06/2023 20:02

If your dishwasher is a bit smelly it's usually because the filter is full of unspeakable fatty stinky goo. Yes, they have filters too. 🤮

jellyminelli · 28/06/2023 20:04

What you going to do @TheDinosaurDuchess? Go to work and confess you've spread an urban myth or keep quiet?

Tess3 · 28/06/2023 20:05

Not on a kia Ceed lol 😆 I remembering reading this and being blown away only to see that it wasn't true for my car lol the fuel indicator comes on on the right but my fuel cap is on the left 🙈

It’s not what side the fuel gauge is, it’s which way the arrow on the gauge is pointing to isn’t it?

I’m sure everyone knows this but I was surprised that a friend didn’t so:

You can freeze milk. You just put it in the freezer in its carton/plastic bottle. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

(I occasionally do it if I’ve bought too much or if we’re going on holidays; put it in the fridge the night you get back and you’ll have fresh milk in the morning.)

It depends how big the container is.

A pint might defrost overnight but anything bigger won't.

@TheDinosaurDuchess is correct

I live rurally skips a distance away, so I always have several frozen milk bottle in the freezer.
Large size, defrost overnight on the draining board. Just occasionally, rarely, the plastic container splits slightly and it leaks until I decant it, so draining board is best place and it defrosted overnight fine then.
Bread and butter also freeze well.

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

This is true for our car (15 years old). It's. It the fuel guage itself it's the little arrow next to the petrol pump sign.

On a totally different note, I was eating pasta salad at work earlier this week, that I'd made and brought from home and kept in my rucksack until lunchtime, and my colleague was appalled as she said it was very dangerous keeping cooked pasta out. She said it was as bad as leaving rice out and both should be refrigerated until you want to eat it. She said a friend if a friend actually died from pasta-related food poisoning.

Does anyone else take great care over refrigerating cooked pasta? Is this a well-known thing?

Wigeon · 28/06/2023 20:17

*it's NOT the fuel guage, it's the little arrow next to the fuel pump sign

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/06/2023 20:22

You can polish silver by wrapping it loosely in tin foil and putting it in boiling water with bicarb dissolved in it, and leaving it. The tarnish transfers to the foil.

Fandabedodgy · 28/06/2023 20:22

Rubbish picture but here is mine with the little arrow pointing

isthismylifenow · 28/06/2023 20:23

Don't try melt a Flake chocolate. For adding to a cake or covering strawberries etc.

Flakes do not melt.

Make a bloody great news, yes.
Taste great, yes.
Melt, no.

Fandabedodgy · 28/06/2023 20:23

Collect the fluff from your tumble dryer and use it as a fire lighter for the bbq

Giselletheunicorn · 28/06/2023 20:26

Had no idea that the neckline on a lot of baby vests and stretch suits is designed to enable you to pull the clothing down the baby's body instead of over the head (in case of poonami!)

Had no idea when DS was little. Literally had to snip a vest off him with nail scissors one day to avoid pulling a pooey outfit over his head.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2023 20:29

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned that pineapples grow on the ground not on trees yet.

ClickingTock123 · 28/06/2023 20:29

Don't know how accurate it is but all my friends and I had it in common...

Every woman has a freckle in the same place on her forearm. Around 3 inches down, right in the middle...

Yes, I meant if you want to defrost in the fridge then it can take several days for a 4 pint container.
