What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Every woman has a freckle in the same place on her forearm. Around 3 inches down, right in the middle...

Argh! just found it! Shock

Never mix bleach with anything except water and make sure you flush before going to loo. When I leave bleach in the toilet I put a little warning sign with tissue on the top so everyone knows to flush first. Your own urine (amonia) causes a small reaction to the bleach and gives off chlorine gas in small amounts.

Omg I didn't know this about peeing on bleach.

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

I also didn't know this.

I've got a freckle too. For science I checked DD, 6yo, she does not.

That most if not all city buses require you to have the correct change when paying with cash. The buses in the little village where I grew up did not so it was quite a shock to be spoken to thusly:

Me: a single to Blah Blah street please, here's a five.
Bus driver: ARGH! CORRECT CHANGE ONLY! Off you go.

Not in this City they don't.

Haha very true.

My DH (works in travel industry) says if you get on at a busy bus stop in London you can flash any old train ticket (as long as it's orange) and the bus driver will wave you on thinking it's a all day travel card.

9/10 success rate 😂

SadScuatch · 28/06/2023 20:45

The majority of mums have mastered the art of sneezing in silence to not wake their sleeping baby.

All my friends who don't have children, yet, can't do it. All my mum friends can!

Iambitingmytongue · 28/06/2023 20:46

Re ‘w’ being the only letter not pronounced with its own sound, the letter ‘h’ is the same - ‘aitch’. I know that some people say haitch but the letter is correctly spelt/pronounced ‘aitch’.

We used to do this! We would get on the bus deep in conversation about the russian revolution and flash ancient tickets. Only got caught out once

Agrogrila · 28/06/2023 20:48

You can use sellotape to get pet hair or other fluff off your clothes

It depends how big the container is.

A pint might defrost overnight but anything bigger won't.

We buy litres, never had a problem 🤷‍♀️ My point though was that you can freeze milk. My friend was dubious and then shocked when she saw me take some out of the freezer.

Haha! I've done it for years.

Quiet bus stop - no game.
Busy bus stop - quids in.

😂

@GeriatricMumma

'W' is the only letter of the alphabet which is pronounced using its actual letter.

Sorry, not sure what this means?

I think W should be pronounced 'double V', not 'double U'

It is in France.

midlifecrash · 28/06/2023 20:56

GeriatricMumma · 28/06/2023 18:05

You can use the round end of a key instead of a £1 in the supermarket trolley

Your left thumb and index finger make an 'L' for left.

Turn your bedsheets inside out and it's easier to flip on the duvet.

'W' is the only letter of the alphabet which is pronounced using its actual letter.

Wubbleyoo? I really don’t get this…,

and what about Dee etc?

Rubber gloves work too! I thought my mum had finally lost the plot when I found her stroking the sofa wearing marigolds and muttering about the cat 🤣
