Had Inquiry on in the background - don't know what I'm more flabbergasted at - the fact it can now be acknowledged that covid is not like flu or how so many resources were redirected to dealing with Brexit at the expense of other vital work.

The trouble is But Jeremy Corbyn spent so longer arguing for the wrong kind of Brexit that it was all much more work that it should have been.

Hugo Keith KC - No work was done in preparing the individual care homes for the necessary surge of numbers...

Matt Hancock - Before the pandemic struck... we didn't even know how many care homes were operating in the country.

The deadline for ballot returns for the RCN was Friday so really hoping for a result this week.... hope it's a strike and watch sunack squirm under headlines like that

Breaking: @theRCN forced to end its strike action after nurses failed to back its strike vote. While 84% of those voting did so, only 43% of members voted, below the 50% needed. #nursesstrikes

Mr McKinley, con mp for south Thanet can't provide evidence that the new illegal immigration policy will have a deterrent effect on today's R4 news programme, unlike the academic who is pointing to concrete examples of safe routes discouraging dangerous channel crossings. Gamely though, Mr McKinley is putting himself in the shoes of a would be illegal immigrant and deciding that it's obvious that the new policy will have a deterrent effect. Even though the evidence suggests it won't.

This annoys me.
Migrants know they are putting their lives at extreme risk when they use overloaded boats of all sizes to cross water. They know there is a good chance they will die.

If risk of death doesn't put them off, it's unlikely a potential criminal record or deportation to Rwanda will......

Raab's Bill of Rights has been dropped

I’m so politically wary now I don’t know if this means that this particular bill has been abandoned or the very concept of human rights 🤦‍♀️

Cornettoninja · 27/06/2023 14:00

Listening to news of Hancock apologising directly to the families attending the Covid committee and I’m honestly not sure what to make of him.

On one hand, it’s a good thing that he has apologised (I think sincerely) but on the other he absolutely deserved the reception he got from those families.

It's good news, it means the Human Rights Act 1998 will outlast this government.

Damn.

Consultants have voted to strike though.

Can see the RCN and all unions representing staff on agenda for change reballoting when it becomes clear how shit the deal is and inflation is still high. The 5% was based on inflation being predicted to fall to less than that but it’s remaining high and food inflation is well above that.

Notonthestairs · 27/06/2023 16:32

Yes I think there will be further ballots this year.
Consultants had a decent turn out 71% with 86% voting in favour.

I guess the constant attacks on nurses by the government and certain media outlets has been effective.

The government has once again voted down a House of Lords amendment that would have introduced checks on donations to political parties to ensure that they are not disguised payments from foreign powers

In a Commons vote late last night, a motion to disagree with the Lords was passed by 289 votes to 199. Two Conservatives rebelled against the motion: Intelligence and Security Committee chair Sir Julian Lewis and Sir Jeremy Wright, another member of the ISC

Conservative MP Sir Julian Lewis said in the debate that the government “was inexplicably rejecting the opportunity significantly to improve the transparency and accountability of our political system"

It's also been reported that record numbers of nurses under 45 have left with record numbers emigrating to the likes of Australia.... it's all well and good the government privatising the NHS to their own end because they don't need the care but will be different when there are no nurses/ junior doctors/ consultants to care for them in private care either.... perhaps they will realise then

Dsil voted for strike action. She hadn't been planning to vote as she felt it wouldn't make any difference, the government would ignore them and she felt bad about abandoning patients. All stuff the government were counting on.
She only voted because dh and I persuaded her that it was important that she did.

Absolutely agree and have said as much many a time.

But people just don't seem to be able to understand that when death at sea is a better option than staying in your country - no other "deterrents" have any impact.

It's not that inexplicable Julian. How else can they keep the Russian cash flowing in to the Tory coffers.

I can understand that. The govt is really digging its heels in and Sunak saying his decisions on public sector pay won’t be pleasant is the latest in the We Are Going To Ignore You Until You Go Away strategy.
Similar feelings in education where I am.

Another Tory MP has apologised for being found out for attending an event in Parliament whilst covid restrictions were in place.

Virginia Crosbie, MP for Ynys Mon (Anglesey), was co-host for her birthday drinks in December 2020 but insists she didn't send out any invitations nor did she drink.

Well that makes it okay then, obviously.
