All I know about handbags is I can never find one that adequately meets my needs. Too small, too large, wrong colour, goes tatty easily, too boring, too trendy, uncomfortable to handle, falls over a lot, not enough pockets, too many pockets, not roomy enough....

But if you ask me about the theories to do with my work, or about sociology, or about caring for animals, or cooking, you could ask a much worse person.

My handbag knowledge is similar to yours.

I don't suppose any handbag experts out there can explain how, within three days of getting a handbag, it contains 17 ball point pens even though you have never used one to write anything in your diary.

Or why, when you need to write something in your diary, 14 of those pens have disappeared, 2 won't write, and the 3rd will, but it's green ink and very blotty and thick?

Explanations from ball-point experts would also be welcome - and maybe a Venn (Penn?) diagram. Thank you kindly

At the end of the day when was the last time you researched materials and composition of materials in the modes of transport you take? Probably never. One just has trust in a process and in professionals

Not when eminently qualified - more qualified and more experienced than Mr DIY Homebase Sub - are telling you that the materials and structure are not fit for purpose. You'd be mad (or dead as it turns out) to ignore those kind of comments.

Yes - it carries a bit more weight than your Auntie Doreen saying "Don't go - Grandad's picture fell off the wall last Wednesday and that means a death"

Was Scott a hero or someone who fucked up with poor planning?

The latter - for a kick off he was advised not to take ponies, and ignored the advice, and he should never have got into a p*ssing up the wall contest with Amundsen.

To be fair, that's one of the mysteries of the Universe! Can't imagine how much research and money would be needed to solve it.

Cat toys are similar, I find. No matter how many nice new ping pong balls or springs I get for my cat, within a couple of weeks I cannot find any! Perhaps they are in someone's handbag?

<checks voluminous handbag - the pens are there, but no ping-pong balls>

Sorry - not in mine.

I don't think it has an official name @SirQuintusAureliusMaximus
Here is a video on the Smithonian website. They call it a mirror rather than an upside down lake. The one I saw wasn't quite as smooth as this one, and also smaller.

How beautiful! I’m shocked the school didn’t want you to speak, I would have bitten your hand off!

No, they’re all under our living room sofa. Covered in dust

It's bloody awful. Poor kid.

@xogossipgirlxo interesting. I wo der if mumsnetters will be as vocally critical of her as they were of his father?

MavisMcMinty · 26/06/2023 10:11

That poor woman. Her son would have been orphaned if she’d gone down in the submersible, instead she has lost her husband and son. There would be no happy outcome for that family whatever had happened.

…I mean “whoever had gone down” rather than whatever had happened, obviously it would have been a happy outcome if the sub hadn’t imploded.

No idea. What I find bit disgusting is that someone tried to milk the story (aka his aunt). Why did she even say this? Mum knew better how he felt about this trip I suppose.

Today the BBC has run an interview with Suleman's mother and she says he loved Rubik's cube and was going down in the sub so he could get a new world record, solving the cube whilst at that depth! Very poignant and sad, poor lad he was just a kid.

Christine Dawood

Teenager on sub took Rubik's Cube to break record, mother tells BBC

In her first interview, Christine Dawood told the BBC she lost hope when the 96-hour mark passed.

I know, that really got to me. My eldest is 17 and loves Rubik’s cubes, it’s just such a wholesome thing to do it makes you realise just how young they still are even when they feel grown up :(

I know, it’s awful. Either 2 kids orphaned or a young boy lost. No great outcome. I think I’d rather have died than my child though. How she will live with this I don’t know. It is upsetting :(

I have never done this but I have just used the regular ones like cars, buses, trains and planes and I know there are regulations. If someone was making a car from scratch and wanted me to ride in it then I’d probably want to know the details and even then likely decline as I’m no engineer to fully understand the risks.

If I was going on the Titan I’d likely do some research and if I went on the website and saw their explanation for why there was no safety certificate I would run a mile as it’s such a red flag. They basically stated that mechanical failure is so rare in accidents and that it’s usually human error so that’s why they’re not bothering about certification, but of course the reason planes etc tend to crash because of pilot error and not because wings blow off or engine explode is precisely because of safety standards and the certifications etc they go through.

TallulahBetty · 26/06/2023 11:33

Anyone got the link to the Rush Reddit AMA, please? Searched and can't find it

notimagain · 26/06/2023 11:38

of course the reason planes etc tend to crash because of pilot error and not because wings blow off or engine explode

For info "Pilot error" isn't really a respectable recognised term in aviation accident anymore for lots of good reasons (misleading, over simplistic). Also over the years you'll find poor design/poor engineering has been a contributory to some decision making that has been sub-optimal so do you only lumber the pilots with the blame?

As for this accident from what I'm reading that lot of people who work with composites etc can't really see HTH you could ever guarantee this was going to be a robust vehicle....

ThomasinaLivesHere · 26/06/2023 12:08

@notimagain I was just responding to OceanGate’s statement for why they didn’t get certifications. Of course mechanics can still be an issue. But the reason it’s generally not an issue for the vast majority of marine and aviation vehicles is because of the safety standards in place which weren’t here. OceanGate arguing that because mechanical issues are generally not the problem they therefore don’t need to bother with certifications is a major red flag for the company. It’s illogical not to acknowledge that it’s precisely because lots of industries have certifications etc to pass that there are hardly any issues.

Here’s the exact quote from OceanGate from part in their website addressing why no certifications: “the vast majority of marine (and aviation) accidents are a result of operator error, not mechanical failure”. It then goes on to talk about how a corporate culture is what’s important.

Absolutely agreed....

Until I got to Amundsen, I was reading this as it if was about Stockton - Stockton Rush - rather than Scott and I was

"he took ponies? What the fuck was he doing with ponies in the deep sea? Is that a typo? Or slang for some deep sea tech?"

🙄
