@HundredMilesAnHour was obviously joking - cf emoji at the end of the first sentence.

Seriously. What is wrong with people here. Get offended at their own shadow.

Sorry I am not an emoji expert

@sashh Several people did tell Stockton Rush that carbon fibre was a bad idea, not only James Cameron but he didn't listen.

I'll be happy to do an AMA but not until the middle of July. I'm off to a meeting the week after next and thanks to watching the news obsessively in the last few days I'm nowhere near where I wanted to be with finishing my two presentations. I'll need to lock myself away this week and do them.
When ds was in P3 I talked to his teacher about coming in and talking about microbes in extreme environments and then she never got back to me about dates and when I asked she said she didn't think the children could relate and she had got a clinical microbiologist from the hospital. I happily talk to children at any age about my work.

Such a shame - DH worked on the Cassini project and went in and talked to Dcs schools about it on several occasions and at different levels from KS1 to sixth form and really enjoyed the wide range of different questions and takes the pupils had.

I read the other post where HH received warnings. There's another issue too. Rush was full of charisma. The Titan already did 3 deep dives and he probably thought it was good to go and ignore the warnings. We don't know what Rush said and dressed it up in order for him to keep his seat. It was likely he trusted Rush and had faith in it.

I was rather struck by Rush’s messages to the other father and son who were interested, offering them discounts of $100,000 each - there can’t have been many people on a waiting list, clamouring to pay full price.

Sorry, there’s a link somewhere upthread to those messages.

The problem with a statement like that is... how many explorers are told not to do X or Y, then they do it anyway, and nothing bad happens

This is irrelevant & a daft thing to say. In this case we are talking about at least two LEADING EXPERTS telling the person not to do something BECAUSE the submersible was not safe in the light of basic physics and safety -whereas other comparable crafts were.

Just saying 'don't do X or Y' is not this situation.

Getting people to change their mind, when they are set on something, even if you are an expert can be difficult.

How do you put doubt in someone's mind that what they are doing might not be sensible and could result in death?

I am sure that explorers and adventurers over time have been told that they shouldn't do something because it might be dangerous.

We hear about the ones who succeeded. But we don't hear much about the ones who failed. Or we treat them as heroes in some cases - heroes who tried to explore, to break boundaries, but who failed at their attempt. Was Scott a hero or someone who fucked up with poor planning?

Igneococcus · 25/06/2023 21:01

@kittensinthekitchen I'm in Argyll&Bute, right by the coast.

That's it. That's what I saw as well. He was very pushy. HH probably had faith in what he was being told. At the end of the day when was the last time you researched materials and composition of materials in the modes of transport you take? Probably never. One just has trust in a process and in professionals.

The waiver wasn't honest either. It mentioned death three times but it never said how. One would presume the possiblity of oxygen depletion but it never explained water depth and implosion.

Interesting question - I guess that there have been lots of deep sea submersible dives without disaster so you would assume it was reasonably safe. I wonder if they knew this was a new concept in design?

Igneococcus · 25/06/2023 21:11

@londonmummy1966 Oooh your dh worked on Cassini, that is pretty cool.
I don't know why ds' teacher thought the kids wouldn't be interested. I have stuff I can show too, not just microbes on plates and under a microscope. I've got the top of a (very small) black smoker, some polystyrene cups that got all their gas squeezed out being taken down outside the sub, some other things. I don't understand it.

Certainly during the earlier trips (e.g. the Mexican fella with the 4-part youtube travel documentary and the BBC Travel Show feature) Rush stressed constantly that this was an “experimental” submersible, and that volunteers/buyers were assisting in valuable research. All said with enormous confidence and charm, of course.

Picoloangel · 25/06/2023 21:25

@Igneococcus that link to the under sea lake was mind blowing! I haven’t read all 5 threads. Can we search a poster’s posts like we can with the OP do you know? Would like to just read all of yours without trawling through all of the thread. 😬Would love to read all your posts!

Not when eminently qualified - more qualified and more experienced than Mr DIY Homebase Sub - are telling you that the materials and structure are not fit for purpose. You'd be mad (or dead as it turns out) to ignore those kind of comments.

Igneococcus · 25/06/2023 22:21

I'm glad you like it @Picoloangel
I have my MN settings in the old style where the entire thread is showing, rather than pages, that way I can search the entire thread with someone's username.
Alternatively, if you go to advanced search (above the "start new thread" box) and search with my username and select search in Chat, that gets you all my posts.

I can't imagine why a teacher wouldn't want an "indiana jones" style scientist to come and tell their class what they've done either. DH says any time he's talked about his work on Cassini he's had great questions - and the DC have had major bragging rights.....

Just reading Rush's Reddit AMA. Somebody asked, 'What's the depth rating for the sub? Do you trust it?'

Perhaps they had insurance after all!

A politician's answer.
It remains at 1 atmosphere until something happens.

Were there any follow ups to that answer?

BadNomad · 25/06/2023 23:08

I'd be surprised if an insurance policy would pay out when it's clear that the vessel wasn't fit for purpose. It should have been uninsurable.

No follow up. It was three years ago and has since been locked.

I've just read it.

TBF - he was asked the depth rating and the interior pressure. The depth rating is not that far off the depth of the Titanic.

No one asked him about the construction difference versus other submersibles. Maybe they didn't know to ask?

TokyoStories · 25/06/2023 23:15

It doesn't look like it was a very popular AMA, only mild interest. I noticed their instagram likes were far and few between also. I guess it was just so out of reach for 99.9% of the population.

TokyoStories · 25/06/2023 23:15

I wonder what they will do with Cyclops 1.

@Igneococcus I'd like to also lend my thanks to you for the amazing experiences you've shared with us in these threads.
I think you are based in Scotland? Would you mind sharing roughly which area?

I'll second that.

@Igneococcus is one of the people whose knwledge and exercise have been fascinating to share,

I thought I knew a little bit about these things (and it was a very little bit - and some of it turned out to be wrong 😳 People - mostly very kindly - put me right.) but the amount I have learned has been enormous.

And I'd like to thank those who asked questions, too. Some were things I never thought of myself, but when I saw the question I thought "Yes! Why does X happen/ not happen in this situation?" and then the ones with the knowledge enlighten us.

It can take a lot of courage to ask a question on here - sometimes the sarky responses are very disheartening - so I do appreciate the people who take their courage in both hands, and those who take the time to answer. I know we can google stuff, but TBH a lot of "expertise" online is contradictory or incomplete, whereas on here you can ask follow-up questions for clarity.

Thank you, Earthlings. I've enjoyed these threads, even though the topic has been prompted by a very sad event.

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/06/2023 07:42

*knowledge and expertise

In my defence, I have been up since half past four with the damn dogs.
