Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

It's a very interesting and desperately sad video.

Because the four passengers would also have been given the same kit and probably have stayed in the same hotel, not knowing what lay ahead.

The flimsiness of the craft is a bit of a shock.

Totally shocking. I completely understand the appeal of viewing the Titanic and in principle I would agree with the CEO that we need innovation and risk takers and so on but my god.

BreadInCaptivity · 22/06/2023 21:22

Within a few days? Don’t be silly. The bodies are still there somewhere, and quite possibly have been seen seen by the ROV, but they have chosen not to release that information yet.

I think you don't understand the physics involved here.

There will be no bodies.

Think of a Pringles tube with a lid on both ends.

What's failed here is the structure of the "cardboard" tube.

The pressure at that depth would have crushed the tube instantly with the lids popping off. That's why they have not found the hull/tube because along with the bodies it's has been totally obliterated by the pressure.

The frame and the tail have (along with the "lids") sunk to the ocean floor below where the implosion took place.

This was in fact a serious concern about the Titan.

The company knew that:

"the Titan’s hull “showed signs of cyclic fatigue.” Because of this, the hull’s depth rating had been reduced to 3,000 meters. “Not enough to get to the Titanic,” Rush said."

The titanic is at 3,800 meters. It takes 2 hours to get there. They lost contact at 1hr 40mins. Pretty much at the 3,000 meter mark.

The one where autopsy’s were doing? Meaning remains were found.

You need to stop. The Byford Dolphin disaster didn't happen at anywhere near the same depth as this was. The Rear Admiral was very clear without explicitly having to spell it out that there will be no bodies to recover. It isn't a matter of debate, it's a matter of physics.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/06/2023 21:22

Doris86 · 22/06/2023 21:17

The one where autopsy’s were doing? Meaning remains were found.

Byford Dolphin was a change from 9 atm to 1 atm. This is a change from 1 atm to 300-400 atm. It is much much worse.

oakleaffy · 22/06/2023 21:22

Doris86 · 22/06/2023 21:17

The one where autopsy’s were doing? Meaning remains were found.

That was under far less pressure and contained I'm not going to go into graphic detail, but in the deep ocean, after an implosion like what they are saying occurred, there won't be anything left to recover.

Have you not seen what extreme pressure does to even a polystyrene cup at those depths?

MrsJellybee · 22/06/2023 21:23

I don’t think some people realise an implosion of this sort causes a huge amount of heat. There will be nothing but carbon particles left of any organic material.

Weal · 22/06/2023 21:24

I’m glad it’s likely their death was very quick rather than a drawn out affair with lots of fear and discomfort.

what an unnecessary waste of life though. Is there anyone who can be held responsible given the CEO was in the vessel too? Surely someone has to account for what seems to be an accident waiting to happen?

rainbowunicorn · 22/06/2023 21:24

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 20:42

Will the banging noises be released now?

Why would it be released, what do you think it would achieve other than a load of idiots trying to analyse it on mumsnet?

*2019-20 Treaty, I should have said (protecting the Titanic wreckage).

L13422 · 22/06/2023 21:25

Are we going to have a new thread or is this going to be the last one?

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 22/06/2023 21:26

For the people who think there would be bodies, think of it like this.

An implosion is the reverse of an explosion just the pressure goes inwards rather than outwards - but it's a massive, instanteous pressure/force.

Imagine a person standing on top of a powerful bomb when it goes off. Would you expect there to be a recoverable body? No. Probably not even a bit of a limb because the proximity to the force would be totally anihilating.

An implosion is that in reverse. Very very high force power impacting inwards. Bits of metal designed to take high pressure may survive. Soft tissued humans not.

Why on earth does there need to be another one? Confused

ThreeRingCircus · 22/06/2023 21:27

I know it's silly but I find it so sad they died on Father's Day (especially the young 19 year old alongside his dad).

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:28

I just can't believe it. My heart hurts 😔💔

People are still talking and although this was the last press conference it won’t be the last of the information being released on the matter

Devastateddaughter · 22/06/2023 21:29

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread , we're they in radio contact with people on the surface?

Thankful for small mercies.

It seems the mini-sub imploded very quickly. (Probably from the severe pressure.) The thought of them being in this thing for maybe almost a WEEK and slowly dying from lack of oxygen doesn't bear thinking about. At least appears it was quick. Still so sad though. Sad

I think they lost contact after a few hours.

EbonyRaven · 22/06/2023 21:30

The point they lost contact was probably when the mini-sub imploded.

I don't think it's a group decision is it? If someone wants a thread they can start one

MeinKraft · 22/06/2023 21:30

Just reading the Titanic preservation treaty and surely Oceangate was in breach of that with their sub- we know it had become entangled in the wreck previously. I mean it hardly matters now but really they shouldn't have been down there in the first place.

The process of implosion at those pressures would have generated an enormous amount of heat. If there were any remains (which there weren't) then the heat would render them indiscernible.

Peverellshire · 22/06/2023 21:31

The plexiglass window was only 7 inches thick, approx 6 after descent. Stockton says before it ruptures it makes a cracking noise so you get a warning…

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 21:31

Well the banging noises could easily have come from activity on the supper vessels on the surface. No one officially confirmed they were from the Titan. But it really doesn't matter now.

A catastrophic failure caused by hubris and bravado. You can't defy the rules of physics with any amount of self belief. Titan was not built to appropriate strength and safety standards and previous travellers were just lucky it didn't fail for them. It was Stockton Rush's decisions that led to his own death and the lives of others who are bought that big bucks meant high standards.

Sad outcome but better that way than the alternatives.
