I will never understand why people don't just scroll by threads they object to. Or why people think they are fit to be the thread police and tell people they can't ask questions.

Its a discussion forum, asking questions, having a discussion is the the entire point. Being here isn't obligatory.

Brace yourself. We are overdue for another "nobody cares about dead migrants" tantrum.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 22/06/2023 11:32

Everyone keeps saying “those poor men” but spare a thought for the families.. the poor mother and sister of young Suleman must be in absolute bits. I can’t imagine what it must be like for that poor lady knowing her husband and son are lost in a tin can on the ocean somewhere. Have you ever lost your goggles in a swimming pool? You know they are right there but prove almost impossible to find… in this case the swimming pool is a bloody great ocean and there’s an oxygen count down.. it’s heart breaking.

I don't object to the thread, just joining in the discussion.

And the blame game has already started. The president of the Explorer's Club of which the two on board are members said, Juliet (the British scanner) should have been accepted sooner and so is the scanner.

'It seems to have taken too long for the equipment needed to get there to help.

Don't understand why it didn't happen sooner.'

Because they're in the fecking middle of the ocean? Because they have to mobilise, get crew, get there?

Maybe the question should be - why are they spending so much money when there's so little chance of actually being sucessful?

I don't understand why we don't give a much of a shit about children dying on small boat crossings as we do about billionaire tourists. Maybe because it's a better story?

For the same reason that millions are still being poured into searching for Madeline McCann when children are going missing every day, and that money would be better spent looking for the ones who may still be alive. I wonder how many children would be back at home if a fraction of the funds given to the search for this one child had been distributed to search for them.

This particular horror has captured public interest - rightly or wrongly, it has the drama and the horror to keep people interested. People drown every day; children go missing every day. Not all are "unusual" enough circumstances for people to be gripped. Sad, but true.

No but I can read. Have you read the historical criticisms of this company?

Most of your posts are just criticising posters who are not experts trying to get our heads round it all and hoping for a good outcome for these men.

But you made an assertion about the actual law, that's my point. Why do that if you don't know what you're on about?

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 11:35

xogossipgirlxo · 22/06/2023 11:29

To be fair, are any of the posts here helpful? It's just theoretical discussion, not that US Navy is reading mumsnet looking for new ideas how to rescue them.

😂

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 11:35

Given it takes about 6-7 days to sail from London to New York I'm not surprised it's taken time to get ships to the site. I think people are assuming that these highly specialised vessels are somehow close at hand and readily available. The subs need to be transported by sea - at least for some of the journey and appropriate support vessels to support their operation are not automatically on hand. Of course it's hard to understand why Oceangate seem to have had no back up plan in place at all - like having two subs on site.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 11:26

Because we want to understand!

We don't know the technicalities - we know there will be genuine reasons for these things not being done, but we don't know what they are and to us non-experts the answers seem so obvious "But why not do X? Has nobody thought of Y" etc.

I think that wanting to learn and to understand is important. A desire to "know", to be educated, in every situation and at any age, can only be a good thing.

I don’t buy that. This is Mumsnet. Nobody on here has any answers on something like this.

'Surely as a deterrent to this, or any other organisation doing the same.'

Dying at the bottom of the ocean in a mickey-mouse tin box isn't enough?

For other businesspeople. Not this one guy.

A lot of people have expressed very deep sympathy for the families, and particularly fr the mother and sister oof that poor boy.

Tend to agree - it just seems like a lot of people stamping their feet and saying "if I was in charge this would all be so better organised" without the slightest clue about how any of it works.

Pedallleur · 22/06/2023 11:23

No one here knows what safety checks are carried out. there will be insurance certification requirements. The team will have I presume a checklist. Need to get the vehicle back and see what went wrong. One for the lawyers and under whose laws would it be trialled?

Agreed with safety checks needed. The worse thing in the thing is another tragedy occurring on top of this which may cost lives or cost them the time they already don't have.

However, I heard from day 1 that the UK co asked if they can fly to St' Johns and wait for permission from there, and that was also declined although maybe for other good reasons such as congestion at airport/port of what was already authorised and needing to rush out to the scene.

We can all just speculate.

I do if it seems people with no idea are weirdly claiming they would run it better.

MavisMcMinty · 22/06/2023 11:39

I keep imagining how awful it must feel to know you’re going to imminently die, and that nobody can rescue you. Apparently it’s really uncomfortable too, 5 people sitting crammed together, not able to stand or kneel - fine in the excitement of the trip to the bottom of the sea and several hours of “exploring” the wreck, but 5 days of it must be torture. I don’t expect a happy outcome, but hope to be wrong.

Nobody anywhere has the answers on "something like this" - yet.

However we do have some people on here with expertise in different fields, others who have had access to reading materiel, TV discussions etc on the ins and outs of why particular equipment is or isn't being deployed, and this is being shared.

I'm not sure why you object to this.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 22/06/2023 11:40

The need to post is based on collective helplessness, of course no one is expecting to influence the search but in a tragic situation like this there is a need to emote. It’s very healthy.

Elerandooo · 22/06/2023 11:40

Can’t we all just agree that what happened with the migrant boat is a huge tragedy which already has its own threads for discussion and shouldn’t be compared to this, which is what you are on the thread for.
Neither are more or less horrific, regardless of the circumstances which led to them.

I really hope and pray that there is a lot more positive happening than we are currently hearing and that they continue the search and rescue as long as possible. If what PP have linked to regarding banging still being heard by three different aircraft is true, they can’t possibly give up hope!

Good points - nice to have a helpful response! I guess its also a case of 'start point is it's bobbing in the ocean', then when clear that wasn't going to be a quick find then moved on.

Laiste · 22/06/2023 11:40

I had to sum up this up for my DD earlier. She couldn't understand why it's taken so long to get help ect:

The Titanic wreck is nearly 400 miles off the nearest shore.

Even fast motor boats only go 40/50 miles an hour in good seas. That would be 8 hours even then. Bigger boats (carrying equipment) will go much much slower. That's why it's taken so long to get out there.

Then imagine the sub might have drifted miles from the wreck site by now ...

Someone hours ago summed it up well for me:
It's like looking in an area the size of Wales, in the pitch dark and under deep freezing water for something the size of a small van. With a torch.
😔

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2023 11:40

" Of course it's hard to understand why Oceangate seem to have had no back up plan in place at all - like having two subs on site."

Titan is the only sub they have that goes to this depth. Their other subs are for shallower voyages.

It is on the plane as we speak. Sea journey was already long discounted.
