OP of the last thread has said she has to pop out so making this one as we’re almost full on the 2nd thread.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

I think time has run out sadly (as much as I want to believe they will be found).

I get that explorers will always want to push the boundaries and the limits, but I cannot understand the 19 year old wanting to take the risk at such a young age. The others have lived (and it sounds like incredibly interesting lives), but the 19 year old was just beginning his life. I just think its never worth the risk at that age, especially with what sounds like no back-up plan if everything goes wrong.

Very sad for them all, especially the 19 year old and all the families waiting for them.

I cannot understand the 19 year old wanting to take the risk at such a young age

Because at that age we think we are immortal, Sunshine - add that to a young man's need for adventure (the effects of testosterone, which is why many more boys than girls feel the urge to indulge in risky behaviour), an as yet underdeveloped brain (not finished until around age 25), and the desire to be able to boast to his friends about his adventures - it's a heady cocktail.

Most young men don't have that sort of money, so they risk their lives on motorcycles, and indulging in risky activities like "tombstoneing" etc. It's what young males do. They regard the adrenaline rush as worth the risk.

JeandeServiette · 22/06/2023 12:16

Is that two submersibles/ROVs on the sea floor now?

DM is saying one down there and one "nearby" (vertically, horizontally?), but I don't like to trust DM and flicking through other news sites I can't see mention of a second craft.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 12:19

I'm totally sickened by the public and media's interest in this story.

Would it be better if no-one cared? Had no interest at all? Just shrugged and said "They got themselves into this, let them get themselves out of it."

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 12:22

It crossed my mind if they would have let the 19yr old have all the oxygen cylinders.

Is there any confirmation that there are cylinders, rather than a supply to the capsule? I don't believe there has been.

Point is, that's how many many people view refugees in boats, including international rescue efforts/resources and media. Let's not pretend this isn't a 'rich boys adventure tale' gone wrong. Let's at least be honest that the scale of the response reflects that 🤷‍♂️

Flapjacker48 · 22/06/2023 12:26

The oxygen is a supply to the submersible crew accommodation from the enclosed machinery area of the sub. It's not a few scuba tanks and masks chucked in the accommodation!

Apologies if already posted but here’s a link to OceanGates website showing the Titanic expedition itinerary for anyone interesting in reading it

https://oceangateexpeditions.com/tour/titanic-expedition/

Thank you, that is fascinating. Stockton isn't mentioned among the 'people who may accompany you'? Or did I read incorrectly?

Sorry I'm tryin gt catch up after a busy morning - they have oxygen cylinders on board? I thoguth it was just the Oxygen in the craft itself and the CO2 scrubbers?

I'm wondering if when they started to think about them if peoples own survival instinct kicked in. All the times of how much oxygen they have are based on all 5 of them being alive, I wonder how early they may have started to turn on each other.

Also where did the time of 12:08 come from? Up until this morning everything I'd seen seemed very approxmiate?

Trixiefirecracker · 22/06/2023 07:35

By unnecessary, do you also include holidays where potentially there might be plane crashes or ferry disasters? Or going to theme parks? Or buying a nice car? All these things come with risks and people have died because of them. Should you donate all your holiday money to a good cause? Just because they are wealthy does not mean they have to donate all the money they own to good causes and if they don’t do they really deserve that fate?

I didn't say they deserved it. They should have used their fortunes for better things. We don't belong in the ocean.

This is an incredible video from ANOTHER near miss... {Russian submersible Mir 2} but he speaks of how he felt [also an actual small video of what happened ]

He says there are strong underwater currents where Titanic is.

Titan submersible: 'All trips to the Titanic MUST be stopped' says Dr Michael Guillen

Dr Michael Guillen discusses the missing Titan submersible as he reflects on his own similar situation where he was rescued 23 years ago.#titanic #titan #sub...

Oh do take a day off.

The truth is that it's the unresolved factor that maintains ongoing interest. The fact there's still hope, and also the impressive technical efforts.

Rayan Awram got similar coverage because those same aspects were present. He wasn't a rich boy.

The Thai cave rescue of the child footballers. They weren't rich boys.

The Chilean miners who had to be rescued weren't rich boys.

The world rooted for all of them.

Sunshineishere1988 · 22/06/2023 12:31

Agree with everything you have said- I just imagine the 19 year olds family would have persuaded him to come back to it in the future, perhaps in 20/30 years time when he had lived abit. Such a young age to take such a huge risk. But as you say, most 19 year olds do think they are immortal.

Will keep hoping for the best for everyone.

It doesn't appear so but from social media seems he's been down before with people. This is really sad as likely they'd have already been hungry and not drank too much before going down;

We do recommend that you restrict your diet before and during the dive to reduce the likelihood that you will need to use the facilities.

JeandeServiette · 22/06/2023 12:33

I think they must have applied their best guess formulae and come up with an incredibly specific notional cut-off time. It's got to be highly theoretical though, because as we've been repeatedly told, there are many variables.

I didn't say they deserved it. They should have used their fortunes for better things. We don't belong in the ocean.

£250k isn't going to cure cancer. It's not even going to make the smallest dent in it. £250k isn't much in the grand scheme of things.

We could all spend our money on better things. Rather than a bottle of wine on a Saturday night I could donate that £10 to charity. Rather than a new outfit I could donate that money. I know many charities that would be very appreciative of the money my family are spending on going on holiday this year.

I presume you are also against scuba diving and any form of swimming in the sea? 🙄

But they do.

Both billionaires on board are big charity contributors.

Thank you for this link - this is such a moving (and in some ways heartening) account. What a courageous and humble man.

I hope that the people in the sub experienced the sense of peace that this man did when he thought all hope was lost. I don't want to think that these men have died, but my common sense tell me they have - but I would like to think that they didn't die in distress.

I have thought that this area of the Titanic should be protected and sanctified - others have said similar - and this man also speaks of it as "sacred".

He is obviously still deeply affected by his experience.

I think we need a new thread? This one is almost full.

FettleOfKish · 22/06/2023 12:41

Magellan is still on the ground in Jersey. I'm beginning to wonder if there's a time period of waiting to see if the other ROVs find anything before they fly it half way round the world (and then presumably have to return it).

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 12:42

Sorry - posted too early. When he speaks of the father and son, he is in pieces.

I'm in tears listening to him.

They must be holding them in reserve for recovery efforts if the rescue fails (?)

Yes it's the being trapped and people trying to rescue them that causes such public interest. We can all only imagine how horrific it must be.

The Thai cave boys rescue was miraculous and as you say they were not white rich boys.

TBF - having had a bit of money in my lifetime (nothing like these guys): the one thing it taught me is that everyone else is firmly of the opinion they could spend it better than you could. Without exception. 😂
