You are making that up regarding the times.

Very basic toilet? What does that even mean? A bucket?

Why would I make things up? If you go back earlier in this thread you'll see I've contributed many articles over the last 24 hours. I'm bed bound, have nothing else to do, and have done copious amounts around this in the last couple of days. Plus what would making up times achieve?! 🤔

I think basic toilet perhaps means some sort of chemical contraption.

Dinkler · 21/06/2023 16:50

If they are alive it's going to be very much by skin of teeth, there are specialist vessels en route now on the marine traffic site but going to be extremely close and don't they still need to triangulate the banging? I hope they can be saved.

It's a small seat type thing with bucket installed and curtain, a bit like mini portaloo.

It's been widely quoted that the 'research period' was two hours.

What good would a beacon be? They are all locked into the submersible.

The sooner they'd located them, the more time there would have been for a rescue attempt. We are three days in to four days' worth of oxygen supply, and as far we know, they still haven't been located. A beacon would have the potential to really help.

A beacon signal couldn't be picked up at that depth. It can't transmit far enough.

They could at least locate it. They have equipment in place to try to effect a rescue, their major problem now is finding them.

It's extra worrying, aquifer previous trip they "lost" the sub for 5 hours, and a journalist witnessed it. The CEO was saying they'd fit becomes but obviously never happened.

It's normal for these to have a beacon operated independently of main power supply, and a flashing lights that activates upon surfacing to help locate them. This had nothing.

Do you have any idea of how sitting in a sealed capsule with an overflowing bucket of wee and piss with four other males is going to affect air quality and mental health?

Oh yes. I've done it many times🙄

Emotionalsupportviper · 21/06/2023 16:56

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/06/2023 16:13

The 19yrnold doesn't though, or his father I imagine..

And when someone you love it at risk, you are more likely to find it difficult to keep your calm because you are worrying about the other person.

The journalist who was on an earlier (terrifying) expedition said that the "toilet' was pretty much a ziplock bag placed under a seat.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/06/2023 16:33

If you don't like the idea of people discussing a major news event and emotionally upsetting incident, don't read.

@tattygrl So trite. Often posted as if it has any real merit - posters are allowed to disagree with what you post or thread contents, you know. I mentioned I had hitherto avoided commenting due to the premise of the thread.

You said the father 'must be wracked with guilt'. I really doubt there is much opportunity for such reflection - but like me, you have no idea. Why should he feel guilty, in any case?

Equally, my point about you being uniformed is the fact that you throw out terms like 'playground' 'mess about' and so on - Hamish Harding is indeed very very rich but has also contributed to serious expansion of exploration targets and feats, and by all accounts, by those who worked with him and knew him is a really decent, humble guy. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65955554

Ok. I don't want to bicker on this topic, it feels wrong. I do genuinely feel emotions of frustration and anger at the venture - NOT at the specific individuals as humans, which is why I reiterated in my original comment that on the human level I feel for all of them and desperately hope they are saved. I feel angry that billionaires are able to swerve otherwise mandated health and safety guidelines and mandates because they can afford to self fund, etc etc. But let's leave this now.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/06/2023 16:59

@Emotionalsupportviper I think the lack of a proper toilet is the least of their issues

No. They showed the portable toilet. It’s basically a plastic milk bottle which you wee in and then shove in a sealed container. No idea how they do the number twos. Maybe this is why they were told not to eat first.

Right. I don't get why everyone is on here arguing over the toilet. Makes you all sound slightly unhinged.

cyclamenqueen · 21/06/2023 17:03

A rescue person on the radio said that even if they do find them there’s probably no way to actually bring them up . There’s no rescue hatch , no way to supplement their oxygen without opening the pod and drowning them. Apparently nothing has ever been brought up from that depth .

It is going to seriously affect air quality, especially as fear loosens bowels.

And if anyone has died already (which is possible) decomposition may have set in - cold temperatures can delay it, obviously, but the body heat of the trapped men may mean that it is warmer in there than we might expect.

Freshair1 · 21/06/2023 17:04

I thought there was a US Navy sub that would be able to haul them up? If they're in a position for a winch to be placed around them of course. It seems unlikely they are in such a position as if they are able to be winched up then surely they would have floated up by now?

Well that isn’t true. It’s been widely reported that the US Navy salvaged a crashed fighter jet from a similar depth last year, using equipment which had been taken to the scene of this incident. Unfortunately they can’t deploy the equipment until they locate the sub.

The way they would be rescued is to bring the Titan to the surface. If it is stuck on the Titanic’s wreckage, then a remotely operated submersible could be used to help free it, and then in theory it should be able to float to the surface itself.

Or if necessary a submersible could be used to attach a line to it, and it could then be winched up to the surface by a ship.

placemats · 21/06/2023 17:12

Let's be honest here. There's no way that anyone is alive in that capsule if it's down by the either halves of the Titanic wreck. If the capsule is on the sea, four days in a sealed environment isn't going to be pretty. If it has somehow managed to land on a remote beach, island, they can't get out.

Horrific as that might seem it's not unhinged. It's being realistic.

Don't you think they are busy composing notes to their loved ones, expressing their last wishes about heirs etc.? Is an obvious thing they "can" do.

At least they've moved on from the "playstation controller" - constantly after someone explained the same are used on US Navy submarines

RocketIceLollie · 21/06/2023 16:48

They have no chance. They had no chance in the first place the moment it went missing. I think it'll take another few days or so to locate it and then another few weeks to raise it out.

There will no doubt be a film made about this one day...

Would they even be able to locate and raise Titan? Is it even possible when they can't even bring the remains of the Titanic victims up for a proper burial?
