I see the first one is full, is there a new one?

I'd imagine they will have to slowly and carefully lift the sub over several hours to successfully remove it from the seabed, providing they can find it. The pressure inside the sub will be extreme..
I was reading an article earlier and it stated that so much as a tiny slit to the exterior of the sub can cause a human to become sliced almost clean in half on the inside, due to the sheer water pressure. This rescue mission, should it be possible, is a huge risk to all involved.

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 15:24

Is it true that one of the big problems with the submarine rescue is that the US/ UK/ French military don’t want to admit what their navy subs can, and can’t, do?

Makes sense really, I don't think international and national security should be jeopardised for this sorry to say.

No matter how many diagrams or videos we are given, or however many people tell us, or comparing things like the eiffel tower or grand canyon... Still what I'm imagining to be the depth of the ocean is probably 1% of what I can get my head around!

Voice on R4 this morning said...
there are 5 or 7 systems to make the subms rise to surface, 7 different things they can do from inside. That none of those has worked suggests the subms is somehow 'stuck' under something.
Very easy, due to poor visibility for these subms's to get stuck.

Another subms getting on scene could in theory unstick it

The way the missing subms stopped beeping ~ hour before it reached bottom, makes me think a multi-failure. Like electricity failure + it then drifted then got stuck.
Time will tell.

I don't feel sorry for them. It's horrible & they don't deserve this fate, but they signed up knowing how risky it was, they made adult decisions. I still hope they make it out ok, too.

How can anyone not feel sorry for them? It's a horrendous experience and probably prolonged death. They are parents, someone's children. Etc. Because they are rich don't their lives matter?

The Horizon Arctic, loaded up with gear that can go that deep, is setting off for the Titanic location... but may arrive too late.

Like the Carpathia

So true, oh dear, it really is a tragedy.

The ocean is the same as space for me, in terms of not being able to really comprehend and get my head around just how vast it is.

I’m sure it won’t be, but it may perhaps be one reason why some of the statements about, for example what exactly is known in the way of noises, or what is being used to listen/search for the same might come over as a bit vague or ambiguous.

It's a great video, but it gives me the shivers everytime I watch it. The sounds are so atmospheric, it makes me panic as the 'camera' pans down and down and down. In similar ways to how I find the current situation so horrifying.

ILikeToSleepALot · 21/06/2023 15:37

I think events like this one really prove the importance and value of regulatory bodies, oversight, standards and "red tape", as much as conservative and libertarian types like to shit on them. That death trap should have never been allowed to go to sea, regardless of how motivated, wealthy or silly its creators or passengers were. Rich people need to be told NO more often and the world would be a better place for everyone, them included.

I shudder to think there are people out there who believe this kind of "disruptor" inventors, Elon Musk and his wannabes, will save us from our own destruction of the Earth by flying us to Mars, or other such nonsense. The capitalist "entrepreneur" market is full of immature idiots who promise to change the world and deliver mostly half-assed, dangerous failure instead.

bluewanda · 21/06/2023 15:38

Someone said upthread that the submarine is not tall enough to stand up in. Is that the case? How dreadful if true.

tattygrl · 21/06/2023 15:38

I feel desperately horrified for them, especially the 19 year old lad. His dad in there with him must be feeling wracked with guilt for bringing him. I do feel anger as well, that the world is allowed to be the playground of billionaires, leading to incidents like this. All the resources and manpower now deployed because some rich people wanted to "innovate" (aka mess about, have some fun). I feel so sorry for them as humans, though, and I cannot imagine the torment their loved ones on land are going through.

I agree with the onion on this. How many small vessels have been without the safeguarding of the coastguard during this 'rescue' operation. They are lost. Can those who wish to fish or swim with the knowledge that the coastguard is there now get on with it?

Imnotahoarderreally · 21/06/2023 15:11

Unfortunately if they found them this minute it’s very unlikely they can rescue them in time.
The oxygen runs out 11 GMT tomorrow, the equipment is 20 hours away.

I doubt that's an exact science, and that oxygen will run out as the clock strikes 11. It's probably an estimate.

If one or two died (say, succumb to dehydration/hypothermia/heart attack etc), perhaps the others could survive longer. I expect that they will continue searching for a while just in case.

Here it is.

This submersible takes passengers to The Titanic wreck. Climb in!

It can take five passengers to The Titanic on the ocean floor, you can pilot it with a gaming controller...and it has a toilet. Climb aboard Titan, a unique ...

I've really tried to avoid commenting on this thread, as I don't agree with the premise of it but this post has tipped me over - it so uninformed and lacking in accurate information about the individuals involved as to be incomprehensible.

Equally, this imagining what the occupants may be feeling - an individual you know nothing at all about, in a situation you also know nothing at all about.

Pandaparty · 21/06/2023 15:43

Even if I were guaranteed to come back safely, and I knew everything would go to plan, I could not do 8 hours in that tiny cylinder, in the dark, shut in with 4 other people and just a sandwich and a small bottle of water for sustenance.

re the waiver if the submersible isnt recovered how could anyone prove negligence? No evidence, black box recorder etc. It was there then it wasnt. Occupants signed the paper and I presume any dependents will have to accept that.

There isn't even a distress beacon on board, there's certainly no black box!

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 15:43

My god. Seeing it. The actual vessel that these poor people are stuck in, makes me feel absolutely sick to my stomach.
He seems so confident in its design, too.

To me, it looks like various pieces of metal stick together.

Wow that has made me giddy. I keep thinking of driving a distance of 2.5 miles and what that would be like downwards in the ocean.
