Read that something will be heading down tonight to hopefully rescue them but they're leaving it very late. Why can't they go now?

Probably because there not on scene yet.

Does this mean they have potentially located them?

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 15:04

Just read that those on board had to sign away any right to sue the company for emotional damage, injury and death.

Terrifying.

chilledtuesdays · 21/06/2023 15:06

terrifying that after 3 days, they might not all be alive even if they're rescued. Dehydration kills after 2-4 days

Yes. There's a definite undercurrent bubbling on this thread as well whenever migrants are mentioned.

Irritation, probably.

The difference in discussion activity isn't because people care less about dead migrants. It's a reflection of the fact that this submersible emergency is a rare and ongoing situation with lots to learn about the engineering and so on. People want to understand the equipment, the options, the purpose of the original dive and so on.

It was the same with the boy down the well in North Africa, the football team in the caves, the miners who got trapped...

What is there really to say when news comes through that a migrant boat has sunk with hundreds dead? It's just unspeakably awful. With no hope, nothing complex to understand, no ongoing rescue effort. What can anybody discuss for hours about that? It's just unbelievably tragic.

So popping up on threads about the submersible periodically and weeping "won't somebody think of the migrants?" just feels in poor taste, frankly. It's not an either/or. Interest in one doesn't imply indifference to the other. There's no connection. It's a weird, virtue-signalling game of ethical equivalence to be playing and it doesn't reflect well.

Spot on.

Some of things I’ve seen online are bloody awful.

I reported an awful post on Twitter. Some of the comments about the occupants of the sub being rich and white.

Even comments under posts about there being a mum somewhere who was anxiously hoping for the rescue of her young son and husband, essentially saying well she is rich and white so…who cares. The lack of humanity is staggering.

These cretins never miss a chance to spew their self righteous bile.

Dinobore · 21/06/2023 15:10

They're not all white anyway!

Imnotahoarderreally · 21/06/2023 15:11

Unfortunately if they found them this minute it’s very unlikely they can rescue them in time.
The oxygen runs out 11 GMT tomorrow, the equipment is 20 hours away.

Tantaijin · 21/06/2023 15:12

No, but some awful people had found out some Dawood family photographs. The mum is apparently white so naturally, undeserving of any human sympathy for the nightmare she is currently living 🙄.

BreadInCaptivity · 21/06/2023 15:15

Does this mean they have potentially located them?

No they have not been located.

They can send down a remote sub to search near the Titanic and look at potential locations they might be.

There are very few (2 I think) subs capable of diving to this depth and they had to get one of there there first.

Realistically if they are on the seabed chances of a successful recovery are slim and successful rescue even slimmer.

It ls awful for the families, they must be heartbroken.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 15:18

I think this is the 'depth' video that people are referring too, I thought it was very interesting

lljkk · 21/06/2023 15:18

Voice on R4 this morning said...
there are 5 or 7 systems to make the subms rise to surface, 7 different things they can do from inside. That none of those has worked suggests the subms is somehow 'stuck' under something.
Very easy, due to poor visibility for these subms's to get stuck.

Another subms getting on scene could in theory unstick it

The way the missing subms stopped beeping ~ hour before it reached bottom, makes me think a multi-failure. Like electricity failure + it then drifted then got stuck.
Time will tell.

I don't feel sorry for them. It's horrible & they don't deserve this fate, but they signed up knowing how risky it was, they made adult decisions. I still hope they make it out ok, too.

I couldn't watch that, it gave me motion sickness.

That says it all. The rest of the post was just hot air.

Exactly. Imagine coming onto a thread and actually typing that out and posting it. They are human beings with families out there that will be absolutely frantic. In all likelihood they aren't going to come out of this situation alive. The lack of empathy from some posters is absolutely astounding.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 15:23

The news channels seem to have gone very quiet. No updates for a while Sad

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 15:24

Is it true that one of the big problems with the submarine rescue is that the US/ UK/ French military don’t want to admit what their navy subs can, and can’t, do?

Hopefully this means they’re working on a plan as fast as they can and hesitant or no time to update the media. I’m not sure how the media operates really, so maybe that’s just me clutching at straws.

Yep.
I think they were foolish but I still feel sorry, especially for the 19 year old.

However I am fascinated by the whole situation as it’s like watching a movie being played over several days.

EffortlessDesmond · 21/06/2023 15:26

@TheTERFnextDoor it probably is a factor... submariners tend not to advertise.

xogossipgirlxo · 21/06/2023 15:27

To be honest, I don't believe anymore they will survive. I just read an interview that rescue mission will take much longer than their oxygen supply is going to keep them alive. This is very tragic. I think we need miracle to see these people safe and sound on the dry land.

The whole issue of what submarines can and can't do, and detection methods has been a very sensitive area for decades..

Wasley · 21/06/2023 15:28

Even if you don't believe in God , say a prayer.

milkyaqua · 21/06/2023 15:30

The Horizon Arctic, loaded up with gear that can go that deep, is setting off for the Titanic location... but may arrive too late.

Pedallleur · 21/06/2023 15:30

re the waiver if the submersible isnt recovered how could anyone prove negligence? No evidence, black box recorder etc. It was there then it wasnt. Occupants signed the paper and I presume any dependents will have to accept that.
