My understanding is that, if the O2 runs out, you basically die from CO2 poisoning. So it's not quite as horrific as the concept of suddenly having no O2.

Years ago there was a BBC. documentary where a scientist (possibly Jonathan Miller?) breathed in his own exhalations - if that makes sense - to chart the effects. It was as though he was drunk - at first he was a bit clumsy, then he was slurring his words, then uncoordinated. They stopped it there, but the next stage would have been unconsciousness. He said it wasn't scary or painful. More like going under anaesthetic.

I really hope that they are rescued but think that is very unlikely. I just hope their is a painless end for them

They have something called a scrubber, which expels the CO2 from the sub. I understand when they initially had 96 hours of oxygen, this was an international basic safety limit for submersible safety. Apparently though, the scrubber is operated by battery power, and the maximum that could operate the scrubber for is 40 hours. So they wouldn't suffocate, but would go to sleep.

PurposefulBear · 21/06/2023 12:55

Do you think they have phones with them, obv I know they wouldn’t be working, but as some sort of means to document what was happening and their last wishes in the hopes they would be found one day? It just doesn’t bear thinking about.

Also hard to interpret what “negative results” means, does it mean they haven’t yielded any clues to act on, they haven’t been heard anymore, or that they have been ruled out as coming from the sub?

I have to say, bar the vipers… I am always astounded as to the font of specialist knowledge that is MN in these sorts of circumstances, there’s always an expert in our midst.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 12:56

I'd imagine negative result means it's either not coming from the sub as it's source, or it's stopped. It really is awful. Sad

hindere · 21/06/2023 12:56

But your post was "Marking place again for news."Rather than announcing that, you could have posted... anything on the topic. It would have served the same purpose.

Which I did immediately I had a few more minutes spare.

If you don't mind my saying, Milky, you appear to have a habit of derailing threads with chippy, dog-with-bone, posts. Enough to have been noticeable. Have a think about that.

All the best to you anyway.

PurposefulBear · 21/06/2023 12:56

I just utterly cannot fathom how it can have absolutely no form of locator device on it. Did someone say upthread that there was nothing which would work at that depth?? In which case surely it should have been tethered at the very least, ideally banned…

Peanutbutteryday · 21/06/2023 12:57

Does anyone know why the sub is grey and not orange?

The idea that people have that they'd be located and rescued by banging on the side of the sub seems...naive.

But if they are banging then they must have the hope.

CinderRosie · 21/06/2023 12:59

I had a glimmer of hope when I read first thing about the banging but as there's been no further news I feel dread about the whole thing again. The idea that someone in there may have been banging away on the wall of the sub in the desperate hope of being located makes me feel sick.

medianewbie · 21/06/2023 13:00

@PurposefulBear I agree. Thete are some very knowledgeable folk on MN.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 13:00

It's an eerie thought that the banging may have fallen silent through either pure exhaustion or worse. It's terribly sad. Really horrific.

The latest update doesn't expand on the reasonings as to why the sounds were ruled out as negative. Hopefully we get an update on that at some stage.

Well, that's an amusing observation coming from you, after your snide chippy little response to a poster simply pointing out the bookmark feature.

I've just noticed your ´useful' tag @SophiaElizabethGrace I've been an active poster on both these threads thanks Hmm

Because they thought they were invincible.

There is, other remote vehicles have beacons independent of the main power supply, and also a flashing light that triggers when they surface to enable recovery. They lost the sub for 5 hours on their last trip, but still didn't install a beacon. Just crazy.

The submersible sends a sonar ‘ping’ every 15 minutes. The ping stopped suddenly. The sub operates at depths up to 4000 metres (2.5 miles) and it’s pitch black, so if the sonar signal is lost, not much they can do.

Did you feel like this about the migrants on the Greek vessel? If not, perhaps ask yourself why. Always good to be curious about your thinking.

I think the constant comparisons to migrants drowning at sea are unfair.
I'm absolutely fascinated by the Titan story because it's literally my worst nightmare being stuck thousands of feet below the sea in a sealed tin can in which I can't stand upright.
It's NOT my worst nightmare to be involved in a boat sinking. Yes, it's just as horrifying a way to go, but it doesn't play to my deepest fears of claustrophobia. I can swim, and I've been on the ocean's surface and on a boat before - so that situation feels more familiar to me.
It doesn't mean I think drowning migrants don't matter, but the people trapped on Titan do.

I am not sure that it could be tethered and also explore the wreck, I would assume that the tether might damage the wreck.

Also, I am not sure what the drag and other properties would be on such a long tether through the depths and if it could ever be fashioned as strong enough to winch the submersible up but thin enough not to cause issues.

it's very boring to have posters spewing faux-concern over a topic that they are clearly following with relish

I don't understand your comment. The only way of searching for them is by trying to pick up that exact noise.

Does anyone know why the sub is grey and not orange?

When I started business one of the things you'll find there are other sub operators out there but they typically um have uh gentlemen who are ex-military submariners and they you'll see a whole bunch of 50 year old white guys.

@ThisIsACoolUserName added to which people have been fascinated for years by the story of the Titanic, and further disaster at that site is shocking- unbelievable really that the Titanic story is still going and still taking lives.

FernGully43 · 21/06/2023 13:12

I have just been reading an article that states Hamish Harding's friend was also supposed to be on that voyage and pulled out due to safety concerns. He talks about some of the things that worried him and felt it wasn't worth the risk and got a refund.

He must be watching feeling sick with relief.
