Very silly question incoming.. if there's no door, how do they get in? Is it more a hatch?? Blush

I read the hatch opens from the outside ... which is understandable but makes this even more worrying

It seems to be like a pod in halves then the halves are bolted together from the outside.

It makes me feel all shaky and vomity just thinking about it.

Oh my god Sad

I hope they survive but let’s hope this is a lesson to others planning on doing these risky once in a lifetime trips. honestly I think that if they survive it will just spur others on to doing equally stupid things. The people who participate in these kind of risky pursuits almost live off the risk of dying.

If these five survive some will see it as proof they’re invincible.

You know that how, exactly?

It never ceases to surprise me how MNers know how other people feel and think.

What a pointless and mean comment

Why mean. People need to learn from this.

Not these people, but others who live off this kind of risk taking.

I don’t think that she was referring to these particular people but to others like them who will hopefully think twice about taking these kinds of risks after a disaster like this.

How is that mean?

I've not RTWT so may have missed something but how do we know that this vessel wasn't tested to travel to this depth ?

Don’t be so obtuse.

The fact is that some people live off this kind of thrill.

The risk of dying is often what keeps them going, because once they’ve done it they’ve beaten death.

You would hope that people would think twice after this, but there is always going to be someone who says “well, it’s ok, just look at those people who went down in the sub and survived.”

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 11:09

Or maybe not two halves (as in equal halves) but two bits to it.

I saw footage of the people outside putting the bolts together after people got in it and felt faint. It's like a tin of tuna and someone on the outside has the can opener.

I seen on Twitter the step son of one of the men on board went to the Blink concert. He said its what he would have wanted him to do. He Tweeted from the concert.

Don't know what to make of that to be honest.

That he is doing stuff to try take his mind off the fact he can do absolutely nothing to help his stepdad right now?

I know I would much rather go with friends to an event I'd already had planned than be sat at home panicking for days on end. Not to mention we haven't a clue about their relationship, nor should we.

It's literally horrifying, knowing you are putting yourself into a vessel that can only be opened from the outside. Sad

I know they don't bolt you in, but that's effectively what you're doing any time you get on a commercial airliner.

What? And give him the benefit of the doubt when his stepfather is [takes deep breath] a billionaire?

caggie2 · 21/06/2023 11:14

I saw someone say about how there should be cyanide pills or a gun available so they can end things quickly for themselves in a worst case scenario but I feel you'd hold on to a shred of hope until the very last second, wouldn't you? No way could I take a cyanide pill to die quickly if there was even the faintest chance I could go home to my kids

Yeah I agree it's none of our business

Topseyt123 · 21/06/2023 11:16

I'm really hoping against hope that the noises detected overnight by the Canadians are from the stricken sub, and that they do lead to it being found, brought to the surface and opened in time.

I don't care if I am being naïve and I don't care about wealth. Nobody deserves to die like that.

I do think that after this episode is over then this type of "tourism" to dangerous sites like Titanic should be reconsidered and stopped. They are just too dangerous and the basic safety measures either absent or inadequate. Rescue is also extremely dangerous and expensive.

Titanic is an important piece of maritime history, but it is also a grave site, even though no bodies exist any longer. We don't need it to claim even more victims than it already has.

Diving to document it for the preservation of history and to learn lessons from it while it still exists is one thing. Tourist trips, even very wealthy ones, are quite another.

Thisweeksname · 21/06/2023 11:17

I feel most sorry for the 19 year old aboard the sub 😞i just can’t fathom how his father thought it was a good idea for the two of them to go. The poor mother knowing they are both stuck down and she is likely to lose them.

Hidinginaonesie · 21/06/2023 11:18

Am I imagining that I read somewhere that a plane had spotted a grey box floating in the search area but had been called away to investigate the banging sounds?

Mistressofnone · 21/06/2023 11:19

This taps into so many people's greatest fears - claustrophobia, darkness, drowning. There isn't even room to stand up in there! I wonder if other submersibles have been down to see if they can locate the Titan near the wreckage.

I keep thinking about him too. At 19 you have your whole life ahead of you, and 19 year olds often feel that they are invincible, even though they aren't.

I do hope they can be found and rescued.

That got mentioned upthread - the source seemed to be a retired submarine expert talking on Sky News in Australia...so credible or not? Go figure...

It's also fascinating in a cliffhanger way: will they survive? Won't they? Will they be found in time?

If we knew what the situation was, there would be relatively little interest but the possibility of the outcome is intriguing.

FannyBawz · 21/06/2023 11:22

I have a couple of questions: I read that the ballast was attached to dissolving links which automatically releases after 16 hours. Does this mean that they must be physically stuck if they haven’t resurfaced?

Secondly. The sounds….. will they be able to determine how far down the noises are?

I've looked at those pages again but no reference of tests. Did you mean on the first thread?

hindere · 21/06/2023 11:26

There's little doubt that the safety measures were insufficient. Which I find really odd, as I'd expect people into extreme adventures to be incredibly safety conscious. People who take risks in water/mountains etc are usually inexperienced and don't understand the nature of the risk they are taking.

Not necessarily true. There's always risk, and experienced, extreme adventurers often end up in the news having met their demise. The crew in this case included professionals, the best in their field.

A recent example, from' this year, is the disappearance of Julian Sands (actor from Room with a View) an experienced mountaineer who failed to return from a solo hike, and still hasn't been found. His family said he would have understood the risk he was taking, yet it also could have been avoided.

mynameisnotthis2 · 21/06/2023 11:27

I had hoped (as awful as it sounds) that the sub had exploded resulting in a quick death for those on board.

Someone said that banging every 30 minutes or so would indicate human activity as opposed to constant sounds and one of the men on board would know that, so the fact they are now investigating noises in a certain area is bone chilling. Those poor people if they are still alive.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 21/06/2023 11:27

For those earlier who were querying banging as opposed to SOS.

Apparently there is an internationally recognised distress call for submariners, and that is to bang on the hull continuously for 3 minutes every half an hour. The French explorer on board was previously in the French Navy, and had made many exploratory trips to the Titanic, so would certainly have been aware of this.
