I don't know how it works in the US, but it seems the waivers made it clear that the vessel was unregulated- I would have thought if it was regulated and was faulty as it were or used outside of the tested parameters then sure; but if its clearly an experimental sub which hasn't been tested in line with the usual criteria etc then unethical but not sure if illegal. There is of course a very big question around if any authorities were aware of this (presumably so) and whether it should have been shut down or not. Not sure how commercial enterprises are regulated.

They actually stated on their website it would be built to a certain safety standard, but wasn't. Industry leader wrote to them with their safety concerns in 2018, but were rebuffed. Their safety engineer was sacked for raising serious concerns, that inappropriate parts were being used, and testing not taking place. He blew the whistle on them, they tried to sue him, he counter sued and was settle out of court. Whole thing just alarming.

Titanic submersible: documents reveal multiple concerns raised over safety of vessel

A 2018 letter from industry leaders urged OceanGate to have its Titan sub classed by an independent agency

My dc is a submariner! Not the kind of story we want to read. Thankfully the navy actually tests their subs and they don't use parts from video games consoles!

There's nothing wrong with using a PlayStation controller.

Bharath · 21/06/2023 10:52

The news said there is a US Navy ship which is capable of rescuing the sub. They would use a robot to fasten a cable around it and winch it up. They used this method to retrieve a crashed plane from a similar depth last year. But it relies on them locating the sub before the air runs out.

Yeah it's their only hope from the sounds of it but it will take hours to get to the area

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 21/06/2023 10:54

I hope these billionaires pay back or donate some of the money if they survive to the rescue teams, governments etc who are helping in the rescue.

I hope they survive but let’s hope this is a lesson to others planning on doing these risky once in a lifetime trips.

They have the equipment in the area. The problem now is finding it.

Ah that's great! Right. Fingers crossed then.

aurynne · 21/06/2023 10:56

To the ones droning on and on that they only get attention and money spent on their rescue because they are rich... the 13 children and coach trapped in a cave in Thailand were prime news for weeks, there was world-wide attention from the beginning till the end and hundreds of millions were spent in the rescue, and the best cave divers brought from around the world. Same with the news of the trapped Chilean miners, which were as far from rich as you can be. It's the common instinctive horror of human beings trapped in the cold and dark with few chances at rescue that attracts people's attention and their will to help at any cost. But I guess this doesn't fit with the "rich people gt all the attention" narrative.

To the ones talking about Morse code... what on earth is the point of banging a message in Morse code when the only thing you want is to be found? What message are you going to send? "We are trapped in a submarine"? Don't you think simply taking turns to bang regularly is much easier and takes far less energy, and achieves the same means?

I'm not sure what's pointless about it.

whereaw · 21/06/2023 10:58

It doesn't always have to be about political point scoring - there are plenty of arguments around wealth and knowledge transfer which argue that international business is a good thing for wider communities and global society. And I know the people on board have contributed far more to society than I have in my meagre impact on those around me, regardless of whether I think I have the moral high ground because'I'm not rich'.
Should we offer more help to someone in a car accident who was on the way to work vs someone out on a jolly because 'they didn't need to be there'?
The community of rescuers helping these people are part of the same community of people who care about research and exploration. Its not for me to judge. And it's not comparable with the migrant crisis at all.
If your house is on fire will you tell the services not to come because you would rather the resources went help the migrant crisis? No. Because that's not how it works.
Why do threads always descend in to moral outrage about who is more deserving?

There's a guided tour of a current US boat here... Have a look from 8:25 onwards...😉

The migrant boat sinking is understood, not an unresolved "mystery". The politics are awful but known.

Not the point of this thread , and I hold both incidents as terrible , but I don't think we do know cause of recent capsizing .

rileynexttime · 21/06/2023 11:01

I've not RTWT so may have missed something but how do we know that this vessel wasn't tested to travel to this depth ?

There's nothing wrong with using a PlayStation controller.

Precisely. It's a small piece of equipment that is perfectly suited to what it needs to do.

Well I disagree with you. They definitely should pay something back or donate to rescue people charities should they be rescued.

They’re the ones putting themselves at risk by going there and say if the rescuers die in the process too, they are putting themselves just as much as risk.

Igneococcus · 21/06/2023 11:02

Even just painting it yellow to help it be spotted would have been an improvement!

Nautile, the French crewed sub operated by Ifremer is yellow. It gets dark very quickly in water, it would only help for the first 100 m or there abouts, but might be easier to spot on the surface.

Florissante · 21/06/2023 11:03

SunnyEgg · 21/06/2023 10:51

Yes
And the door would also have to open outwards, which would be impossible against the pressure

It's not an airplane: there is no 'door'.

MySugarBabyLove · 21/06/2023 11:03

I hope they survive but let’s hope this is a lesson to others planning on doing these risky once in a lifetime trips. honestly I think that if they survive it will just spur others on to doing equally stupid things. The people who participate in these kind of risky pursuits almost live off the risk of dying.

If these five survive some will see it as proof they’re invincible.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 11:04

Very silly question incoming.. if there's no door, how do they get in? Is it more a hatch?? Blush

I think they get in and then it's screwed shut

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 11:05

It seems to be like a pod in halves then the halves are bolted together from the outside.

It makes me feel all shaky and vomity just thinking about it.

🙄Hatch then. Does it matter?

I was echoing the pp language. I mean who cares?

Most have seen the pic or video of the sub
