In some ways what we talk about/discuss very much depends on the volume of news coverage itself that we're exposed to. A woman dying of natural causes in her 90s isn't generally a newsworthy event but when the Queen died there was literally no other news for days! Did the Queen dying more sad, or have more impact on my life than migrants drowning at sea? No. But it was documented significantly on all media.

The (iirc) Vietnamese immigrants found in a lorry in Essex had far more news coverage than individual migrant boats, I think because its a rarer occurrence, not because one is more tragic than the other.

Exactly.

Titanic is fascinating already (many books and TV stories prior to this), an "unresolved case" is attention-gripping (e.g. loss of MH370 - we knew for a long time that all would have perished but there is still the why and the lost nature of the plane).

One bottle of water each doesn't really allow any margin for error at all does it. It sounds like most people are better prepared for a day walking in the countryside than these lot are in "exploring" in the depths of the ocean.

The whole thing just seems so ill prepared and beyond risky.

"There is nothing inherently wrong in using parts that have been developed by other companies (eg video game controller) as millions will have been spent on that R+D and it may well be one of the most responsive systems out there to human touch."

I did note the controller is a (cheap) Logitech rather than Sony/Microsoft who are the ones to spend millions on R&D. The choice of using bluetooth is very strange to me (but what do I know) and they carried at least two spares based on the CEO's video.

To multiple posters, there is a difference between hyperthermia (abnormally high body temperature) and hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature). Literally opposite ends of the scale.

I don't begrudge taxpayer money used to find anyone lost at sea or in the mountains or elsewhere, BUT I find it funny that the British billionaire is tax resident in Dubai and therefore will pay a lot less tax than the rest of us!!

Made me think about how high earning middle class on PAYE are squeezed within an inch of their life with tax, while billionaires live abroad in tax havens.

Tremel · 21/06/2023 09:42

The banging is more likely to be coming from a ship or another sub.

Tremel you just make things up really.

If it was another ship then it would not have been reported by the coastguard as significant.

We get. you don't care because they are rich and you think they are stupid. being rich does not mean you don't experience human emoptions and fear. You know?

And you are wrong- I will wager pretty much all of us DO care about migrants and the utter tragedy that is played out day after day. It's possible to care about more than one thing at a time. THIS has captured attention for all the obvious reasons.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 10:15

The migrant boat sinking is understood, not an unresolved "mystery". The politics are awful but known.

Like The Princes in the Tower - lots of royal people were killed at that time but no one knows if/when they were, so it is still fascinating to humans.

If they are rescued they are likely to be affected by this mentally for the rest of their lives.

Surely if it was them that is banging they would use Norse code which there is no mention of.

Do you know Morse code? Would any on board know it?

I think so. It is not arcane.

The CO2 levels will be starting to build up, though - I think it saiid that the "scrubber" which removed the CO2 from the air only had 40 hours working time. High C)2 is as dangerous, if not more so, than low oxygen.

(I apologise if I've misunderstood - I'm not good with technology)

That's correct. Also, the temperature down there is approximately 3°C. If nothing else happened, it's quite possible they've frozen.

Personally, I think there's been a minor leak. If that happens near the sea bed, it's said the pressure will make the sub fill with water before you can blink, and it's all over before you can even register what's happening. If they haven't survived I really hope this is what's happened. It may at least give their families a crumb of comfort.

The reason I think this happened, is apparently the pilot misjudged, and actually crashed into the wreck itself last yaar. Not only was the body never pressure tested originally as it should've been, but then after the crash they repaired it, and the repair itself wasn't tested. It almost seems like putting a plaster on a blown out tyre, then trying to beat the land speed record.

I'm pretty sure Hamish harding a trained pilot would know morse code.

EmpressSoleil · 21/06/2023 10:19

I don’t know why migrant boats keep being mentioned. It isn’t an either/or situation. You can have sympathy for both. For me this is nothing to do with them being rich. It’s imagining the fear of being trapped in a tiny tin can counting down the hours till your death. Drowning is horrific, no doubt about it. But this situation taps into my darkest fears, and I won’t be the only one to feel that way. That’s why it’s captured attention, that and it’s such a unique situation. It doesn’t mean that I don’t care about migrants who have drowned. But it isn’t some kind of rich vs poor contest. Both are tragedies.

Bluebells1970 · 21/06/2023 10:20

The whole thing is more and more disturbing as time goes on. They have taken a lot of money to take tourists down to a graveyard under the sea in a submersible that they had no way of recovering should something go wrong. And now it's costing the US Coastguard millions of dollars for a search and recovery operation.

Hopefully this will lead to a huge tightening up of commercial operations that aren't bloody safe.

sashh · 21/06/2023 10:17

They are experienced explorers and one has broken records for deep sea exploration. Someone if not everyone on board will certainly know Morse code!

In this situation I would guess 'SOS' is the limit of attempted communication anyway.

So you are insisting that the banging must have come from the sub? No other explanation for it at all. Truly, experts walk among us.

Oakbeam · 21/06/2023 10:20

Do you know Morse code? Would any on board know it?

I know enough to bang out SOS in Morse code, not sure about the Scandinavian version though.

Agreed, AFAIK it's still a licencing requirement....(though you don't have to be high speed proficient.....)

He'd definitely know SOS anyway.

Oakbeam · 21/06/2023 10:17

Were they 'dropped' or launched directly over the Titanic site? If so, how is the search area so wife - can they drift at the bottom very far?

Undersea currents could have moved them miles from where they set off.

Daring underwater mission reveals how deep ocean floor currents can travel thousands of kilometres

Also the weather out there has been the worst in 40 years according to reports. Currently 6 foot waves, and competing currents at all levels, not just the sea bed.

icelolly12 · 21/06/2023 10:19

Exactly. I'm pretty sure Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former French navy officer, would know morse code. Even I know SOS in morse code!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/06/2023 10:23

It's harder with bangs though — you can't make a long and short one as easily. Rhythmical will probably be safer and easier to pick up as intentional. And if you're suffering from dehydration, lack of oxygen etc, the simpler the better I would think.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 10:23

Wait. So the submarine they've gone down in, has been sent down there before AND crashed into the titanic shipwreck, before coming back to surface, being slap-dash repaired and then sent out again this time around?! With not so much as even a water tightness test?!

Words fail me.

onlywayissussex · 21/06/2023 10:23

Even if i didn't know morse code, id learn if I was going on a submarine
