Surely if it was them that is banging they would use Norse code which there is no mention of.

It’s seems impossible and I’m wondering why they haven’t already started trying to get these potentially vehicles to the site?

They are sending something - it will take 15 hours to get there. Not sure when that was.

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:35

Morse

I'm a bit confused by some of the reporting. This presumably isn't the first time anyone has reached the wreck? As one of the people in the sub has supposedly seen the wreck multiple times.

So what makes this such an unusual voyage (?). Is it that it is carrying non professional divers or the sub itself?

It is the first voyage for the ocean gate submersible this calendar year, owing to weather conditions.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 09:33

I'm the thing that confuses me, is that the sounds could be literally anything. They can't guarantee that it's the sound of those inside the sub..
they also mentioned it was completely regular, like x amount of times per 30 minutes.

That's it though it's a regular thing rather than a random clonk so that is a signal.

The banging is the code.

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:36

I expect they convinced themselves that it must be safe if the ceo himself is willing to do it

inigomontoyahwillcox · 21/06/2023 09:29

If they were to locate it would they be able to use the underwater ROVs to attach an inflatable and inflate it to float the sub up to the surface? I'm struggling to think of any other way of rescue (not that I am any kind of expert).

Apparently they have recovery ships there with cranes that work with wrecks and oil rigs. IF they can find it, the plan seems to be to send down a remote vehicle with arms, loop a cable around the sub, and reel it to the surface. The problem is finding it. They've said rather than a needle in a haystack, try to find a 5p piece on a football pitch.

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:36

Are they actually banging sos?

BeginningToLookALotLike · 21/06/2023 09:37

TokyoSushi · 21/06/2023 09:33

I think the potential banging makes the whole thing worse, it would be absolutely incredible if they were able to a) find it and b) get them out in time.

I'm getting my hopes up but I know I shouldn't.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 09:38

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:36

Are they actually banging sos?

It doesn’t matter, any rhythmic repeated banging would indicate human origin rather than “sea noises”

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:36

Are they actually banging sos?

I'm sure they would have deciphered this if it were true.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 09:38

The banging alone must be exhausting for them ☹️ at this stage they'll more than likely be delirious alongside suffering with hyperthermia. Silly question I know, but does anybody know - if the sub has gone off the radar and is untraceable, I'd imagine that means all heating / lighting and electrics have also gone?
I ask as there's been conversation around wether or not they even know they're missing / untraceable. I suppose they must be aware somethings wrong if they are in pitch darkness and cold. Just utterly terrifying.

13,000 feet.....

Oh right… so to the bottom of the Sea then. Oh dear.

Vitaminbees · 21/06/2023 09:39

Yes banging is a good and bad sign. Hoping for a miracle!

onlywayissussex · 21/06/2023 09:39

These risk seekers, it's like a drug. They need a bigger hit for the adrenaline to affect them

Climbing Everest is not going to cut it. Bungee jumping is like the tamest ride at the funfair

Space? Pah! Loads have been now. That's old hat.

I know, ill go to the bottom of the Atlantic in
A tiny tin pot for fun

This. Whatever is making the banging is making it in a pattern so its unlikely to be a whale or something

Yes, surely they would bang sos?

Tremel · 21/06/2023 09:42

The banging is more likely to be coming from a ship or another sub.

Dinobore · 21/06/2023 09:43

Banging rhythmically is much more effective than morse code in this situation.

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:43

So awful that in the event of a failure their only communication is to bang on the side.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 09:44

Tremel · 21/06/2023 09:42

This is unfortunately what I was thinking.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/06/2023 09:44

onlywayissussex · 21/06/2023 09:41

Yes, surely they would bang sos?

The banging is every 30 mins. Apparently that is a common 'protocol' used in instances where people are trapped. The French guy was in the Navy for 25 years and the 'experts' are saying he will be very familiar with rescue protocols.

So it looks promising that they're alive. Finding them (let alone rescuing them) is a different matter entirely though.

Dinobore · 21/06/2023 09:43

Who even knows morse code 🤷‍♀️ I certainly don’t

Harping · 21/06/2023 09:46

Isn’t sos just three short bangs. Three long ones and another three short.

but it sounds like this is not normal protocol in this situation
