I’ll start, McCain frozen jacket potatoes. Supermarket own brand never cook through properly and it’s so handy to just have one in the freezer

For those people mentioning spending money on good kitchen knives, my dad trained as a chef in the 1970s and had a set of Sabatier knives. When I left home he gave them to me and I still use them now. I think I’ve had to have them sharpened once in the last 20 years I’ve had them and they are honestly as good as new.

God only knows what it would cost to replace them!

Yumbox lunchboxes. Ridiculously expensive but one of the best things we’ve bought.

Is there anyone in particular that you would recommend? I am sick of mine leaking , I have had salad all week (dressing in separate container) but because I have to carry the boxes on there side in my rucksack all 4 I have leaked saladly water even though I don't cut up the tomatoes in advance.

Are business class flights cheaper in the Uk? I’m in Australia and they are thousands.

Apple iphone, ipad and laptop!

I'm an "oldie" and always frowned on people insisting on paying a small fortune for Apple, and "happily" carried on buying windows laptops, android phones, etc.

Boy, what a mistake!

I tried to fob off my son with the same, i.e. Samsung mobile phones, HP/Dell laptops, but he was constantly whingeing about what they wouldn't do, software faults, etc, etc.

I gave in when he was around 13 and bought him an old/reconditioned iphone, just to shut him up and prove that android phones were just as good! Nope, he was delighted and immediately stopped whingeing - even though it was old, he loved it. Then he started wanting an Ipad, so given the cost, I said he could have one as a joint christmas and birthday present if he agreed to having nothing else, thinking he wouldn't go for that deal! He jumped at the chance, got his ipad and didn't bat an eyelid that there were no other presents! When he did exceptionally well with his GCSE's we asked him what he wanted as a reward, thinking driving lessons, a new bike, a holiday, but he just said he wanted an Apple laptop for his A levels! We got him one and he was delighted.

When the time came to update his old iphone, he obviously wanted a newer model, which we got him, but he kept pestering me to take his old one and try it out. I knew I wouldn't like it, wouldn't get any benefit from it, but let him swap the sim card just to prove him wrong! Doh! I loved it, much more intuitive to use, better features, no having to constantly delete/reload apps after crashes etc. But I kept quiet as I didn't want to admit defeat to him. After a couple of weeks he took it and said he'd swap the sim cards back - I grabbed it off him and told him to keep his hands off MY phone!

That was closely followed by me buying an ipad. Then last year, I bought an Apple laptop. Oh boy! How much time did I waste faffing around with windows and android, how much wasted time faffing around after crashes. I'm well and truly converted to Apple, won't ever go back!

7 minutes? Your jacket potatoes must be tiny

usernother · 21/06/2023 14:49

I've just spent nearly £200 on two hard pillows and they are the best thing ever. I hate soft pillows where your head sinks into them. Wish I'd bought these years ago.

readbooksdrinktea · 21/06/2023 14:59

Mattresses. Shoes. Hair care. I'm never using cheap shampoo and conditioner again.

MooMooSharoo · 21/06/2023 15:22

Dyson Air Wrap - I have fine hair that breaks easily and this is the only hairdryer I've ever used (with the smoothing brush) that makes my hair look nice and last all day looking nice, as well as keep it in better condition. Even my hairdresser commented how much better my hair was and she didn't know I'd bought one.

Shark cordless vac - just brilliant

Baked Beans - ideally Branston but Heinz if not available.

Toilet paper - Cushelle all the way

My cleaner (though my friend has a cleaner that's more cleaner/housekeeper as if she finishes the cleaning, she then just cracks on with anything else that needs doing - laundry, changing beds, ironing, etc - I'm quite jealous of that, and could probably get our cleaner to do the same, but we'd need her more regularly and therefore pay her even more!)

Private Medical (though my work pays) - was a godsend when I broke a bone - private waiting room chairs are soo much comfier than NHS! Plus 5 days for an MRI, not 5 weeks.

Sipsmith Gin - need I say more??

Professional shampoo and conditioner. Mine costs £20 for a litre, but the shampoo tends to last 7 months and the conditioner 8 or 9.

rosetintedmemories2023 · 21/06/2023 15:33

yes also private medical!

Mummylovesmonkeys · 21/06/2023 00:51

Agree mattress and shoes (though yes-to me Clarkes are expensive)

Andrex toilet rolls

Tena lady (hate other brands!)

I know you said you hate other brands but have you tried "Always for sensitive bladder" ?
Unfortunately they are scented now but if you can put up with a perfumed floof imo they are better.
They are thiner and come in a lot more sizes than Tena. Usually easy to get hold of at wilkos , home bargains etc

CarpetSlipper · 21/06/2023 16:23

Superga shoes - really comfortable and last despite all the walking I do.

Bare Minerals tinted gel moisturiser - really nice for everyday, has SPF and doesn’t make me break out.

Bravissimo Flora bralette - so comfortable, bought for wearing in the house but ended up wearing it most of the time.

Good quality meat and veg

Taylors coffee

Stock ram. If you buy a cheaper lad it's always a false economy

coffeesuppliesdirect have good deals on Taylors coffee and tea. Taylors flavoured bags are brilliant and such good value from them.

So true. Same with cleaners. Decent, honest, reliable workers are worth their weight in gold. When you get one, look after them and never quibble about the cost!

Our joiner has just given up to become a HGV driver citing easier work and more pay. Trouble was he grossly undervalued himself and only charged £20 per hour for frankly exceptional work, along with being 100% honest and reliable. Even hanging a door or making a cupboard was a work of art with him. He just wasn't a "business man". Over the years, we kept hinting he was undercharging but he seemed obsessed with cheap competition from bodgers and didn't have the confidence to charge what he was worth. He could have doubled his rate (and more) and still been worth it.

Prior to that, the joiner we'd used was more expensive, pretty shoddy, and not particularly reliable - he fitted several internal doors and not a single one closed easily - all the latches/locks were slightly "out" meaning each door had to be pushed/pulled by the handle to open/close. The doors fitted by the HGV chap were absolutely perfect!

Agree. We experienced same many years ago. Insisted on paying him higher rate after seeing his level of work but sadly he chucked it in following year because of the competition for work not nearly as good. Having said that we’ve since accepted higher quotes from people who work for companies and the work has not been close to his standard.
