I’ll start, McCain frozen jacket potatoes. Supermarket own brand never cook through properly and it’s so handy to just have one in the freezer

I've been trying to buy better quality stuff in the last five years. Tbh, most of the expensive stuff I've bought has been a revelation!

Good knives and other kitchen equipment
Miele hoover
Good pillow (I thought I liked the cheap ones but then I treated myself to a ridiculously expensive one and it's incredible).
High quality fabric clothing
Tinned tomatoes
Birds Eye peas - much better imo than own-brand.
Lawnmower
Ham
The list goes on.

I sometimes feel like I'm doing the opposite of Martin Lewis's Downshift Challenge.

Ok guys pillows point me in the right direction 🙏🙏

Peloton. So much more than a spinning bike.

Yes to peloton, I love mine

Good hair styling products - my hair is wavy and likes expensive ones annoyingly

Catsmere · 21/06/2023 02:41

Agreeing about shoes and boots. They’re the only clothing items I will spend hundred of dollars on (albeit reluctantly, lol). I have foot problems and have to wear custom orthotics, so need comfort shoes to go with them.

Fudge Clean Blonde purple shampoo and conditioner. Only one I’ve found that gets rid of the brassy tones in my grey hair and doesn’t dry it out.

Cisapride. Horrendously expensive medicine I have to get compounded for my cat’s megacolon. But it keeps her healthy.

QuizzlyBears · 21/06/2023 03:00

I’ve been thinking more about this tonight and will add red wine, pillows, health insurance, kitchen knives, and winter boots to my list.

I have wavy hair, can I ask what you use?

Business/sometimes first class travel on long haul flights, high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, a subscription to The Economist/Financial Times (it’s so important to invest in good journalism), contact lenses, a good vacuum & shoes.

Kinsters · 21/06/2023 05:23

Anything you use regularly. For me that's bedsheets, handbag and sunglasses. I pay extra for extra leg room seats on planes but I don't think business class is worth it even for a long flight, it's so expensive and for me doesn't make much difference to jet lag etc.

Elemis skincare. Since starting using it my skin has never looked better. It’s pricey so I buy it when it’s on offer or via selling groups on Facebook where you can buy it for 1/3rd the retail price.

Qvc is your friend. They often do the sets on special value

Proper J cloths

Good leather shoes/boots

bonfirebash · 21/06/2023 07:31

@BlinkeredBay a mix but mostly treluxe as I do a sort of curly girl method

ginoclocksomewhere · 21/06/2023 07:38

Agree re Mccains- I've never had a normal potato bake so well 🥲

Le Chameau wellies- over 10yrs strong, I bought insoles for them as they started sliding a few years back but I still love them.

Yorkshire teabags. Nothing compares.

HP brown sauce (again, cheaper alternatives just not the same)

Birkenstocks- one they're moulded, literally the most comfortable thing ever.

I got a pure silk one from Cuddledown. DH and I love them but they are quite soft so maybe not for you if you like a firm pillow.

The pillow protectors and mattress protectors are much better than ones I got on the high street too.

Decent well reccomended tradespeople, always happy to pay above average for the right people.

So true. Same with cleaners. Decent, honest, reliable workers are worth their weight in gold. When you get one, look after them and never quibble about the cost!

Our joiner has just given up to become a HGV driver citing easier work and more pay. Trouble was he grossly undervalued himself and only charged £20 per hour for frankly exceptional work, along with being 100% honest and reliable. Even hanging a door or making a cupboard was a work of art with him. He just wasn't a "business man". Over the years, we kept hinting he was undercharging but he seemed obsessed with cheap competition from bodgers and didn't have the confidence to charge what he was worth. He could have doubled his rate (and more) and still been worth it.

Prior to that, the joiner we'd used was more expensive, pretty shoddy, and not particularly reliable - he fitted several internal doors and not a single one closed easily - all the latches/locks were slightly "out" meaning each door had to be pushed/pulled by the handle to open/close. The doors fitted by the HGV chap were absolutely perfect!
