What expensive thing is worth the money?

I’ll start, McCain frozen jacket potatoes. Supermarket own brand never cook through properly and it’s so handy to just have one in the freezer

A good bike (and a bike shop that you trust), a pushchair matched to your needs, the Stokke Trip Trap chair with branded accessories (so you know they'll fit and work), any baby/ toddler gear made by German or Scandi brands, a German car and a sturdy bed (currently all three of our beds are wonky and I hate it!!!)

Orthodontic treatment

Good quality cookware. I have a few Le Creuset pieces that are older than I am and still perfect. Decent shoes and sturdy well-made bags also last for ages and are more than worth the extra money. The holy grail of an umbrella that won't break or blow inside out (can't bring myself to fork out loads for a brolly though).

You want a Senz storm umbrella 👌🏻

Decent shoes. Made the mistake of buying cheap ones and they lasted 4 weeks. I'm about to replace the ones I got in November. (I walk a lot as I don't drive)

I'm completely with you on this.
Most of mine are from Hotter or M&S and always leather.

Redlarge · 20/06/2023 21:34

Yorkshire tea. Fairy liquid. Mattress. Good soap, shampoo and conditioner

Hollyppp · 20/06/2023 21:34

Feather pillows, duck down duvets, quality white sheets.

Fresh orange juice, on the vine tomatoes, good bread

Drop off valet service at airport

Good quality sofa

Nice wine

Fever Tree tonic water

Rightnowstraightaway · 20/06/2023 21:51

I've been trying to buy better quality stuff in the last five years. Tbh, most of the expensive stuff I've bought has been a revelation!

Good knives and other kitchen equipment
Miele hoover
Good pillow (I thought I liked the cheap ones but then I treated myself to a ridiculously expensive one and it's incredible).
High quality fabric clothing
Tinned tomatoes
Birds Eye peas - much better imo than own-brand.
Lawnmower
Ham
The list goes on.

I sometimes feel like I'm doing the opposite of Martin Lewis's Downshift Challenge.

Reading this thread, I realise I am cheap as chips. Don't need to pay over the odds for any of these things.

However, I would agree with dental treatment. Would go for dental implants over a root canal.

scrumpingforapples · 20/06/2023 22:10

Things I have forked out extra money for and would again:

Mattress
Good quality sheet
Miele dishwasher and washing machine (both still going strong after 22 years of daily and twice weekly use respectively)
Walking boots

Things I've wasted money on:

Face creams advertising miracles
Hotel rooms that look nothing like their advertised photos
Ditto restaurant meals which are microwaved pub food in disguise
Exercise bike and exercise videos

If you have dogs or cats, a decent robot vacuum (or two). Amazing little buggers.

Ooh is there one that’s particularly good at dealing with fur?

I’ll add kleenex balsam tissues - never again will I suffer with a red-raw nose when I have a cold!

Waystation · 20/06/2023 22:27

Dyson air-wrap
shoes/boots
coats/jackets
1st class rail travel
underwear
lululemon
dog

I have a Eufy and a Dibea - the Dibea was cheaper but I prefer it. Mainly because it has a bigger dust bucket and is easier to keep clean as it doesn't have a roller.

They're both equally as good at picking up but the Eufy would probably cope better with fluff/fur than the Dibea which is perfect for hair. Don't bother with a mopping function though - pointless IMO.

Really! McCain's horrid frozen potatoes. They're horrible and cheap and nasty. Put your own potatoes in the micro then finish them in the oven. Far, far superior.

cassiatwenty · 20/06/2023 22:44

Also, private medical
