I thought most people had a 'treat' every day

I always have a piece of cake/few biscuits etc with a cuppa when I get home from work. I thought most people did it. But my running partner says she never eats sweet food as she never fancies it. Her treat would be a handful of nuts! We always have biscuits etc at work as well. Does anyone else rarely have a sweet treat? I don't think I could survive without it

My Dm is 80, always been slim and healthy. She eats a balanced diet- never overeats but she has a small piece of cake or some sort of dessert after both lunch and dinner.

viques · 19/06/2023 21:45

I do have a sweet tooth, which is why I rarely have biscuits in the house. I do have a jar of nuts though, which are a great treat, the ones I buy have a few raisins and sultanas in the mix as a little sugar hit.

I don’t have a sugary treat every day no.. I’d be huge if I did! I do drink too much coffee though if that counts. X

You wouldn't necessarily be huge. I mean if you are a 100gram bar of chocolate or a massive cheesecake, you'd put on weight. But sometimes I like a treat like one of those mini kinder bars or even just a chocolate coin or a mini mars bar. As part of a normal diet, that won't make you huge.

Sometimes I love Mumsnet.

"I have one square of dark chocolate when there's a full moon, and survive on rice cakes and smugness the rest of the month."

I'm currently dieting but I have macarons as a treat...they are only 49 calories and feel like such a lovely treat.

dickheed · 19/06/2023 21:46

No, that's not a treat if it's every day. It's a habit.
I don't have sweet treats like that because I am fucking terrified of diabetes which caused my Dad's sudden death, far too early and I suspect his mother had it too, though in those days it wasn't as well known. So no, with a family history of diabetes I am not risking that and so I already behave as if I have pre-diabetes, which I don't. I test my own blood sugar regularly and also have it tested at the doctors from time to time and so far so good.

FancyFanny · 19/06/2023 21:47

Your attitude to food is screwed if you limit treat food to once a fortnight!

Are organic vegetables less fattening than non-organic ones?

A wee bit of cake as part of a balanced diet will do no harm.

The occasional piece of cake, fine. A little of what you fancy does you good. Every day though? 365 pieces of cake a year adds up to a heck of a lot of sugar and fat your body could do without.

DontBePassiveAggresive · 19/06/2023 21:49

My primary school aged kids have pudding every day at with their school dinner.

I have chocolate after my tea every day too

OP, seriously it’s normal to have that stuff every day. Feel like this thread is v misleading. A few biscuits for elevensies and a choc bar in the evening etc is just normal food habits.

I agree. I have a couple of biscuits with a coffee several times a day. Chocolate or a chocolate biscuit most days too.

Jam on toast is a perfectly normal breakfast not a treat.....

Admittedly I am overweight but I have made a conscious decision to enjoy life rather than be a martyr not allowing myself a biscuit. I eat loads of vegetables and do exercise every day. My mother in law spent her life worrying about her perfectly normal weight and died of cancer at 54. So I say life is literally too short not to enjoy things you like.

BeyondMyWits · 19/06/2023 21:50

We have cake for tea on Sunday, always look forward to it as a treat. I think people's definitions of "treat" vary.

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 21:51

Half the threads on MN berate people for becoming fat and costing the NHS. The other half berate them for being joyless and not eating cake daily. 😂

Jenniferturkington · 19/06/2023 21:54

Yes, I do most days. That’s probably why I’m a stone over weight though. None of this ‘just a couple of squares of dark chocolate’ business either.

My kids have always had a pudding every day. I bake a lot so they might have a piece of cake, a chocolate yoghurt, mousse or ice cream. They are both a healthy weight.

NancyJoan · 19/06/2023 21:54

I don’t have biscuits/cake in the cupboard, just not my thing. I could eat crisps/cheese/hummus all Day longer, however, but I don’t because I’m already heavier than I would like.

bonjour75 · 19/06/2023 21:55

Most people do as you describe. (Must do as we're all quite fat?)

BitOutOfPractice · 19/06/2023 21:58

I do t every day. Maybe 3 times a week? Today’s was an ice lolly. It was hot.

Momo18 · 19/06/2023 21:58

I think this is normal for most people, although Mumsnet will shame you obv 🤣

Lolaandbehold · 19/06/2023 21:59

I've had 2 it kats (4 finger), a bag of Haribo strawbs, half a bag of eclairs, 3 packets of crisps today, 2 cans of coke and a smoothie today. (stressful day). Diabetes waiting to happen.
Tl;dr yes, I eat sweets daily.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 19/06/2023 22:01

You know, there are whole aisles in the supermarkets devoted to biscuits, chocolate and crisps so I don’t think this thread is very representative.

I have several treats each day and I’m a size 10. The only way I can stay off the chocolate is to buy the high protein chocolate puddings from Aldi. They’re full of sweeteners but they fill you up if you eat two or three every day and I think they’re better than chocolate.

bakewellbride · 19/06/2023 22:02

If you have something every day it's not a treat!

Teaismymiddlename · 19/06/2023 22:03

I don't call it a treat. To me it's just food.
I eat a lot of 'good' stuff but I also eat a shit ton chocolate and cake. Every day.

A very close family member (In fact 4) two had very very healthy lifestyles and two had a lot of wine and cheese and smoked

They all died before 65 of heart and cholesterol related illness

Their diet apparently made zero difference to their health as had tests done regularly and cholesterol tests were normal if not good

Health and exercise didn't matter. It wad their time so that was that

I'm gonna have what I want when I want as a direct family member that could also be me in 10 years....

Not gonna waste those 10 years saying no to cheese and cake

(just not together... Cheesecake 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢)

RampantIvy · 19/06/2023 22:07

I had a mini magnum tonight, but usually I don't eat sweet stuff because I don't want to put on weight.

Dutchesss · 19/06/2023 22:07

I have biscuits or chocolate daily, usually both after lunch and dinner. I'm slim and otherwise healthy eating around 8 portions of fruit and vegetables daily. I usually don't fancy too much carbs with my meals so I guess the sugar makes up for what's lacking.

xogossipgirlxo · 19/06/2023 22:09

I like sweets, but my motto is "all or nothing" 😂One biscuit won't do for me. Or 2 squares of chocolate. I'd rather eat multipack of Kinder Bueno and then I can go without sweets for 2 weeks, I just don't feel like having them. Then the day comes when I really fancy something sweet and can eat 10 digestives and pack of M&M's. And so it goes.
