I thought most people had a 'treat' every day

I always have a piece of cake/few biscuits etc with a cuppa when I get home from work. I thought most people did it. But my running partner says she never eats sweet food as she never fancies it. Her treat would be a handful of nuts! We always have biscuits etc at work as well. Does anyone else rarely have a sweet treat? I don't think I could survive without it

We don’t really stock treats in the house except dark chocolate or if I’ve baked something. Or there’s been an occasion.

I do eat treats on weekends when we are out and about (gelato or a slice of cake with my coffee).

Are organic vegetables less fattening than non-organic ones?

A wee bit of cake as part of a balanced diet will do no harm.

Yes, because they're more expensive so portion-control is built in... :)

A wee bit of cake might do no harm once a week. Every day is a different matter, once you're menopausal with poor blood-sugar control and cholesterol issues <bitter>

My grandmother was very health conscious but she always had a piece of homemade lower sugar fruitcake and a few squares of dark chocolate every day.

Loafbeginsat60 · 19/06/2023 20:15

I used to and then I had to cut out carbs for a month and just carried on. Im not saying I don't have something sweet but it might be a few jelly beans or a strawberry lace.

Before that it was cake or chocolate or both daily!

I can’t as my job is so sedentary I would pack the weight on. I do always have a treat at the weekend though. Either chocolate or cake usually. If I could get away with it I would def have more though

TrueScrumptious · 19/06/2023 20:16

A treat is something rare and special, so I wouldn’t say it was a treat if you have it every day. I like chocolate but probably don’t have it every day. Quite often, though. I still wouldn’t call it a treat, though.

StopFeckingFaffing · 19/06/2023 20:16

I have a sweet tooth so like you OP I like to have something sweet each day even if it's just a couple of squares of chocolate

I don't think it is a problem, if it is part of a balanced diet and you also eat plenty of fruit and veg

I would always prefer to eat a bit less savoury stuff so I can have some of my daily calories in the form of chocolate, cake or ice cream!

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2023 20:17

I eat chocolate every day. I never eat crisps or nuts as I don't like them.

I really love chocolate!

I am not overweight, exercise a lot & don't even think about eating some chocolate - I have it if I wavy it.

The only thing I don't like is that at times I use it as an emotional crutch to 'feel better' & generally don't ...

But as something to have daily as part of my diet - absolutely!

murasaki · 19/06/2023 20:18

No, occasionally a piece of cheese but I don't have a sweet tooth. And as said, if it's everyday, how's it a treat?

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 20:18

Surely it depends on how old you are, how active, what you weight, what your blood sugar is like and so on.. no point asking MN. Up until my 40s, I could eat cake and chocolate daily as I had a very fast metabolism. Now, I can't. But the fact is if you stop eating it, you stop craving it. It becomes too sweet for you.
Now I crave a toastie, but that's another story...

KvotheTheBloodless · 19/06/2023 20:18

I guarantee that most of the PPs who claim not to eat biscuits etc. will be overweight.

It's normal to have a couple of biscuits or similar most days, almost all my friends (aged 30 to 50) are slim - we all exercise plenty and we all enjoy a small treat most days - it's part of a balanced diet. We don't scoff an entire packet, or eat a slice of chocolate gateau every day, but most things are fine in moderation.

TMose · 19/06/2023 20:19

I have one or two chocolate bars every single day and have done for years. I don't care about cake or biscuits or crisp or any other type of 'treat' but I really crave chocolate every day. I've tried to cut down but i really lack the willpower, my cravings get way too strong to ignore. That's probably a problem and I do wish I could reduce the amount to just a couple a week

ODFOx · 19/06/2023 20:20

I'm n this house cheese is the main treat. I buy lots. We all love it.

I am not overweight. I am 5'7 and a size 10, though with a wobbly tum. But as I said, each person is different. If I ate biscuits daily, I wouldn't be this size.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2023 20:20

if it's everyday, how's it a treat?

A treat is whatever that means to someone. Not defined by frequency.

It might be a 'treat' to go to bed early or watch a particular programme, or eat crops or chocolate.

The 'treat' bit is in doing something that feels pleasurable to that person, not the frequency or otherwise.

(Tho I don't consider that I'm having a treat when I eat chocolate. It's just my part of my daily diet).

ReeseWitherfork · 19/06/2023 20:21

Yes OP! Not a chocolate fan but a big yes to biscuits or cake daily.

Away with you and your narrow definition of treat - there are multiple meanings and nuances to rhe word.

I thought most people had a 'treat' every day
snickersontoast · 19/06/2023 20:22

Yes, I have something sweet every day. Usually some dark choc with a herbal tea at the end of the day. I have a sweet tooth and definitely need to lose weight but can't help myself.

woppydoopy · 19/06/2023 20:24

I never ever buy cakes and buns, they just aren't my thing.
But crisps..... oh my goodness 🤤

I'm not overweight. I weight the same now (10st exactly at 5 ft 7) as I did when I got married in 1992. It's never change more than a few pounds except for 2 pregnancies.

I exercise a lot because I enjoy it and the social life that comes with it. I eat what I fancy and don't watch my weigh at all. I just know that sugar makes me feel rubbish, so it doesn't feel like treating myself.

JanesBlond · 19/06/2023 20:24

I don’t have a treat every day - surely it’s not a treat if it’s routine? If I ate sweets/chocolate/cake/biscuits/crisps or whatever every day I’d be the size of a house. I do eat nuts most days though, I don’t consider them a treat.

Jogonmagpies · 19/06/2023 20:25

This is MN. You are in the land where people consider stuff like white bread needless and overindulgent greed. People who dare to eat a kit kat every day should be followed around all the time by the bell ringing shame woman off Game of Thrones.

StaringAtTheWater · 19/06/2023 20:13

I'm with you OP. I eat some chocolate pretty much every day 😳 and illogically still call it a treat!

Same here.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2023 20:28

If I ate sweets/chocolate/cake/biscuits/crisps or whatever every day I’d be the size of a house.

Obviously eat what you wish (or not!).

But this isn't true. If you are a few squares of chocolate, that might be 150 - 200 calories. It's easily accommodated in most people's diet.

Obviously eating in excess of your required calorie intake will cause weight gain - but declaring sweets / crisps are the single cause isn't true.

Because they are nutritionally not useful to us, it's obviously not a good idea to get your calories to any significant extent from them.
