I thought most people had a 'treat' every day

I always have a piece of cake/few biscuits etc with a cuppa when I get home from work. I thought most people did it. But my running partner says she never eats sweet food as she never fancies it. Her treat would be a handful of nuts! We always have biscuits etc at work as well. Does anyone else rarely have a sweet treat? I don't think I could survive without it

No I don't because I don't do 'a few' or 'a slice'. I am in awe of people that can moderate like that.

IHeartGeneHunt · 20/06/2023 07:30

I have biscuits and a horlicks when I get in from work and I'm on a diet, I just factor in the calories. Still losing weight. I just love biscuits.

WinchSparkle80 · 20/06/2023 07:37

Up until 2 weeks ago I would have said yes at least cake or biscuit every day- wouldn’t even cross my mind not too.

But the weight has crept up and nearly classed as overweight so trying to lose.

But wow I miss it…

I sometimes have a full lettuce leaf not just my regulation half!

Greedy pig.

Pinchaperfect · 20/06/2023 08:31

yep, biccies with a cuppa at some point during the day, chocolate most evenings. I run and practice yoga, and generally eat healthily. love my chocolate, dont drink alcohol.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/06/2023 08:33

I walked past someone eating a biscuit last week, failed to avert my gaze, and put 3 stone on as a result.

ButterflyCharm · 20/06/2023 09:00

I’m Chinese and was not raised with stuff like cake and biscuits. I just don’t have a sweet tooth, DH will have the odd chocolate bar. The cake I do like is really heavy fruit wedding cake but last weddings I have been to have had really sweet sponge cake.

bonjour75 · 20/06/2023 09:23

So much piousness and moral judgment and internalised misogyny! I read this as if you like chocolate you're one of the laydeez- you need it for your time of the month - you're a lightweight frothy person with no restraint!
If you can't even stomach the sugar in a grape (better yet you only like blue cheese), you're a serious, sophisticated skinny restrained - French seeming - women!
So much snobbery and judgment in food - it's a feminist issue!

jay55 · 20/06/2023 09:33

A little something daily stops me from having a big binge and undoing everything.

I wish I'd learned this years ago.

I thought this. I just can’t imagine a load of blokes judging each other for what they eat at all. Diet culture has a lot to answer for. And I’m just as bad; I like my food and find myself rolling my eyes at the people who “eat a square of dark chocolate once every six months”.

Well, I am a slim daily Kit Kat eating blue cheese and cheddar loving post menopausal (so no ‘time of the month’) feminist.

I think it’s a society wide issue (plenty of overweight men out there too) and the problem is that big business is using every psychological trick in the book to sell us more crap than we need. They employ ‘food scientists’ to work out the ‘bliss point’ between sugar and fat in processed foods to make them irresistible. They position these tempting foods where it’s hard to ignore them (apparently we have a limited amount of willpower that can be used up on things other than resisting foods, e.g dragging yourself out of bed to go to work uses up some of your willpower allowance each day).

I went to Paris a few years ago and had appointments that me at I couldn’t get an evening meal until very late, so I thought I would find a place for a coffee and snack in the afternoon. The sort of place that’s every few hundred yards in any UK High Street. I couldn’t find anywhere. I also didn’t see any overweight Parisians, just some overweight American tourists. You could get a coffee in the afternoon in any bar and you could find the odd patisserie to buy cake to take home in a box. But not both together.

ErnestCelendine · 20/06/2023 11:38

I have a BMI of 21 and rarely a day goes by without chocolate, crisps, ice cream, cake or biscuits- usually 2 or 3 of these. No sign of diabetes in recent blood tests for something else.

Lucky metabolism but my teeth are fucked!

ErnestCelendine · 20/06/2023 11:39

2 or 3 of the food groups, not 2 or 3 biscuits.

It is a feminist issue, but there's another related question that's missing in your post:
Why do so many women have treat mentality in the first place?

Seriously, a biscuit is neither moral nor immoral.

As part of a healthy, balanced diet there's absolutely nothing wrong it with eating a biscuit or not eating a biscuit, depending on your preferences.

If someone wants a biscuit, just eat it and enjoy it.
Get past the whole "ooh I'm naughty me having a little treat, it's been a busy morning so I'm going to treat myself to a cake... Long day? Of course I'll treat myself to some chocolate. Why wouldn't I?"

Common sense also works the other way as well though. If someone's eating a lot of 'treat' food such as cakes, biscuits, chocolate, rewarding themselves with food and then is overweight or unhappy with their appearance, noting that there's several hundred calories a day in treat food is probably a good place to make changes.

I'm sure French women are generally slimmer than British women but the four French women I know are very overweight and eat very unhealthily (lots of sugar, coca cola and pastries).
Also, I've been to France several times and have always managed to get a cake with my coffee!

My treat is Tesco Valencia Ice Lollies. That I have daily:)

Omg they are so good. The pink lemonade ones are my fave though they are lush.

Beesandhoney123 · 20/06/2023 12:15

No, not every day. I like a bit of cake now and then. My idea of a treat is cucumber or watermelon ( thanks mum)

A treat is once in a blue moon though? Not every day?

Except that most of the judginess has come from those who do eat 'treats' to those who don't 🤷🏻‍♀️

Indeed. In terms of @bonjour75 post I was the person who said I cannot stomach sugar in a grape. Not to say I am serious skinny restrained person- in fact I said i was 2 stone overweight (and genuinly so..... 12 and a half stone on a 5 ft 2 inch body ) but because I have blood sugar issues. And no sweet tooth which is why i said I prefer something like blue cheese. I am not shaming anyone with a sweet tooth I was saying that not everyone does- I don't.

No snobbery or judgement in my post as far as I can see. Just responding to another person who found the idea that some people find fruit too sweet to be bizarre. As part of a conversation, not as self aggrandisement.

People like different things shocker.
