I thought most people had a 'treat' every day

I always have a piece of cake/few biscuits etc with a cuppa when I get home from work. I thought most people did it. But my running partner says she never eats sweet food as she never fancies it. Her treat would be a handful of nuts! We always have biscuits etc at work as well. Does anyone else rarely have a sweet treat? I don't think I could survive without it

I’d be shocked if there was a day I didn’t each some chocolate or cake. But I regularly go to the gym and eat 3 very healthy meals a day.

Most people in this country only think they have a balanced diet, unfortunately.
Eating UPF every day is not it.

Well actually after having anorexia for 20 years and now being fully recovered following a plan a dietitian wrote for me years ago that includes chocolate, cake, crisps....I've never been healthier, BMI is perfect. So yes eating some UPF can be healthy if it's all balanced.

No need to try and shame people for what they like to eat.

Berlinlover · 19/06/2023 21:02

I have a Kit Kat every day.

Meeting · 19/06/2023 21:02

People on this thread are hilarious, you'd be obese if you ate a couple of biscuits a day?

OP I'm a size 8 and I have tea and biscuits/cake every day. Sometimes I even have a Cornetto too 😯

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 21:06

Well maybe not biscuits but if I ate cake daily, yes, I would be overweight. Not obese. Luckily I don't like cake all that much.

Also am BAME. My diabetes threshold is low. As my GP keeps telling me.

Obviously you will get different replies depending on how old people are.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/06/2023 21:07

Yeah I eat something sweet every day! I am fat though, unsurprisingly! Tbh it's still a treat as it's an effort resisting all the the other opportunities in the day and if I only have one treat a day, I feel like I'm doing well. Bread, cheese and nuts are all just normal daily food to me to eat in moderation.

Dashel · 19/06/2023 21:07

No I try not to have a treat like that most day. I’m trying hard to ditch some weight and I need to eat calories that fill me up and besides I can’t eat one or two biscuits so it’s just easier not to bother.

A piece of cake is quite a few more calories than something like a 40 calorie Lotus biscuit though, but I guess it only matters on what works for you and how happy you are with your weight.

As I still want to loose a bit more I’m content to keep the odd food treat to weekends and have a Coke Zero instead and yes it’s not the same but it’s worth it to me.

movein · 19/06/2023 21:08

I can honestly say that if I never ate a cake biscuit sweet or piece of chocolate again my life I probably wouldn’t even notice. I haven’t had any of them since Christmas. I’m not a fruit fan at all either. I simply don’t have a sweet tooth

However, crisps are my downfall and I try desperately to not eat them but they are definitely my treat food along with cheese and olives which I could eat for every meal of every day no problem

Budikka · 19/06/2023 21:08

I used to have a sweet tooth and a "treat" every day. Now, growing older, I just do not want it any more. Anyone worried about eating chocolate should just have a piece of high-cocoa chocolate along with their usual treat to feel better.

Sure, biscuits and cake are not as good for you as berries or nuts. But there are much worse things. As long as food is not worryingly high in saturates, sugar content, salt, E numbers, then I think there is no harm in brightening up your day with something nice.

goodbyestranger · 19/06/2023 21:08

Yes definitely cake every day (and pudding) but 'good cake' ie from the local bakery which is amazing or sometimes - very rarely - made by me. Don't regard it as a vice, regard it as healthy. If I didn't eat cake every day I think I'd be far too thin.

Lecoqdor · 19/06/2023 21:08

I don't, but purely because I don't like sweet things and never have done.

I could eat crisps forever, though, so I don't buy them.

As a result, I don't snack at all, as there's nothing I'd want to snack on.

renthead · 19/06/2023 21:09

I have something like this every day, usually biscuits with a cup of tea or a piece of homemade loaf cake. I also eat jam, maple syrup and a lot of naturally sweet foods as I have a sweet tooth- and a BMI of 22!

Oakbeam · 19/06/2023 21:10

I don’t have a sweet tooth, so it’s no from me. We rarely have biscuits in and a bar of chocolate can last me six months.

ZaZathecat · 19/06/2023 21:10

Not everyone eats sweet stuff but I bet most people have something that is not essential/good nutrition every day, e.g. crisps, wine etc.

goodbyestranger · 19/06/2023 21:10

Yesterday was flapjack with tea and bread and butter pudding with lavender and tonka bean. Today it's flapjack again and orange cake for pudding. Delicious.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 19/06/2023 21:10

I used to.

Unfortunately - I have quite an unhealthy relationship with food (luckily not unhealthy enough to cause and health problems. Just the threat of having to replace everything in my wardrobe with the next size up!) so I could never just have a biscuit or two with a cuppa.

It would be half/all of the pack. Or a share size chocolate bar. And/or half a share bag of crisps. I just cannot stop.

I've been calorie counting the last couple of weeks, and have managed to cut it all out. Bloody hard work, but I just wasn't on the headspace where I could do moderation.

Aim is to be able to have a big treat one night a week, but that's it. Not every night, and not multiple treats.

If I could do one biscuit a night I would

Deathbyfluffy · 19/06/2023 21:10

People like different things - it’s nothing new. I love a sweet treat but I’m in the minority at work

SallyWD · 19/06/2023 21:11

I have a biscuit or two every day, maybe even a bag of crisps too. The rest of my diet is healthy. I do 16/8 and walk around 10,000 steps a day. It all seems to balance out. I'm not overweight.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2023 20:28

If I ate sweets/chocolate/cake/biscuits/crisps or whatever every day I’d be the size of a house.

Obviously eat what you wish (or not!).

But this isn't true. If you are a few squares of chocolate, that might be 150 - 200 calories. It's easily accommodated in most people's diet.

Obviously eating in excess of your required calorie intake will cause weight gain - but declaring sweets / crisps are the single cause isn't true.

Because they are nutritionally not useful to us, it's obviously not a good idea to get your calories to any significant extent from them.

Unfortunately it is true. I have PCOS and I’m already overweight on a healthy diet. Some people’s bodies just can’t handle this stuff as well as others’. I wish I could eat biscuits every day without gaining weight, getting adult acne and my hair falling out but alas it is not to be. The dietician even told me that I couldn’t handle having a slice of wholemeal toast with peanut butter for my breakfast.

Beautiful3 · 19/06/2023 21:13

I used to until I got fat. I've packed in that malarkey. It's a low fat moouse for me in the evenings now.

I think your running partner is fibbing. If it's not sweets, she'll have some other vice.

EmeraldFox · 19/06/2023 21:16

I like nuts, or very dark chocolate which isn't particularly sweet. I'm not that into biscuits and often find cake too sweet.

Cakeandcardio · 19/06/2023 21:17

I eat something similar everyday. I still think of it as a treat. It's my one treat a day 😅 I also thought everyone was the same! I usually have a piece of chocolate first thing in the morning too.

ilovesushi · 19/06/2023 21:17

A line of chocolate (about four squares depending on the bar) every day after dinner. Have done so for the last 20 years or so.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2023 21:17

@JanesBlond

I'm sorry to hear about the PCOS, and obviously your health situation is complex. I'm still finding it hard to understand how wholemeal bread with peanut butter could be unhealthy for you or a cause of weight gain? (I'm not doubting your specific situation, just hadn't heard this).
