I thought most people had a 'treat' every day

I always have a piece of cake/few biscuits etc with a cuppa when I get home from work. I thought most people did it. But my running partner says she never eats sweet food as she never fancies it. Her treat would be a handful of nuts! We always have biscuits etc at work as well. Does anyone else rarely have a sweet treat? I don't think I could survive without it

I love sweet and salty snacks depending on the mood, but certainly not daily. Maybe not even weekly! We have unopened packets of biscuits which I'll open if we have workman here (renovating) and savoury nuts/snacks if friends come over- but I wouldn't have cakes and biscuits daily!

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 19/06/2023 20:30

Interesting how definitions of treats vary.

To me a treat is something I spend a bit more money on because I like it, but wouldn't buy it every week.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth and do eat biscuits, chocolate and cake occasionally but don't think of them as a treat. The concept that a treat is something that makes you fat is ... weird.

SeriouslyStressed57 · 19/06/2023 20:33

I eat choc / cake or biscuits every day. I’m currently pp but I’ve always been a healthy weight. I don’t really drink and I don’t eat take always or high calorie meals and im
not really a snacker. I just like sweet food so let myself have it (often it’s only freddo size etc)

BHRK · 19/06/2023 20:34

Me! A couple of biscuits or some chocolate or crisps every single day. Not a major part of my diet.
size 10, mid 40s, eat a load of fruit, veg and protein too

blanketsforall · 19/06/2023 20:34

I'm a biscuit-a-holic but eat plenty of good food and exercise a fair bit and am in the ok weight range - I don't think a few biscuits or the odd bit of cake is going to make me diabetic 🙄 it's a poor heart that never rejoices as my nanna would have said!

Cherrysherbet · 19/06/2023 20:34

My treat this week was a box of duck eggs, because I think they are yummy.

Only on mumsnet 😂

Al991 · 19/06/2023 20:34

OP, seriously it’s normal to have that stuff every day. Feel like this thread is v misleading. A few biscuits for elevensies and a choc bar in the evening etc is just normal food habits.

Lcb123 · 19/06/2023 20:36

I have dinner when I get home! I would see cake as an occasional treat; not every day. Most week days I only have 3 healthy meals and one or two snacks of fruit

yikesanotherbooboo · 19/06/2023 20:37

DM and DMil are/ were both very slim for their entire long lives. They each had sweet things daily at mid morning and after dinner. They also would have marmalade or jam on their toast in the morning.

Yes! And I suspect it's one of the reasons we have the obesity crisis. You're only treating yourself if you're feeding yourself junk Confused

DS was asked to name something that was a treat at school. He said strawberries and was told he was wrong.

People can eat what they like and all things in moderation etc, but why are we teaching children that a treat is something that's bad for you?

HawdMeBack · 19/06/2023 20:38

Every day here! Or it was until I started cutting back a few weeks ago. I don't have cake regularly, but biscuits and chocolate were a daily thing. I miss them 😫🤣

RiseYpres · 19/06/2023 20:39

I don't have a sweet tooth at all.

I have some sort of treat though every day. Greek yoghurt and almonds is my favourite. Or pizza. If I am being really indulgent I have chicken wings. I am not trying to make a claim to being healthy though- I have bulimia which i am currently working on (6 months or so since a binge and purge). I just don't like sweet things.

susie25 · 19/06/2023 20:40

Cake/biscuits aren’t a treat to me, they just make me feel rubbish and send my blood sugar crashing an hour later. I’d far rather have cheese or something savoury.

Also agree that treat isn’t something you have daily!

You need to check the fecking price of duck eggs.

No food is “bad” for you. Food isn’t “good” and “bad”. And that attitude is why some people have an unhealthy relationship with food, whether that’s undereating or overeating. Nutrition isn’t a moral issue.

KvotheTheBloodless · 19/06/2023 20:18

I guarantee that most of the PPs who claim not to eat biscuits etc. will be overweight.

It's normal to have a couple of biscuits or similar most days, almost all my friends (aged 30 to 50) are slim - we all exercise plenty and we all enjoy a small treat most days - it's part of a balanced diet. We don't scoff an entire packet, or eat a slice of chocolate gateau every day, but most things are fine in moderation.

You doing something doesn't make it normal, I almost never eat biscuits or sweets 'm not "claiming" I dont, I don't because there aren't many I like so I never buy them

Theres only one biscuit eater in my house so very much not the norm here

RiseYpres · 19/06/2023 20:41

DrMarciaFieldstone · 19/06/2023 20:14

No. I don't keep baguette and lovely butter in the house because I would eat it all.

Same… I can’t buy a fresh sourdough loaf. The whole thing would be scoffed by me alone in 24 hours

Oh yes to this, B aguette and decent butter and some brie.... it's game over for me at that point.

Youknowaboutthepaint · 19/06/2023 20:42

Maybe tell the schools that then. You're preaching to the converted here.

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 20:42

Mmmm... sourdough loaf. I had some today. I guess that's my treat. I would rather have that than cake.

Newtrix · 19/06/2023 20:44

I definitely don't have a treat a day, maybe 2 or 3 times a month, my mum and sister do every day, more than once a day.

Newname2323 · 19/06/2023 20:44

If I have something sweet in the house I'll have it everyday, if I don't I don't but I definitely crave it! Used to be more of savoury person - crisps, crackers etc but since my last pregnancy all I want is chocolate Confused

Stickybackplasticbear · 19/06/2023 20:45

I'm currently losing weight. I eat things like this as part of a calorie deficit. Not many as I feel like they make me hungrier and I don't have the calories at the mo. I'll have a freddo or similar. I do also true and have something like a fruit I love as a treat.

I think something daily is pretty normal. Although I don't want to be unhealthy fat, life is too short to constantly restrict and not have treats.

VinnieVanLowe · 19/06/2023 20:45

I certainly do. Even on 1200 calories if I want to lose a bit of weight I leave 100 for a freddo frog or fun size Mars bar. I eat tons of fruit and veg and eat pretty healthily the rest of the time so don't see it as an issue

I agree. I don’t eat biscuits every day and it’s not because I’m trying to pretend to be morally superior or anything, I’m just not a big fan of sweet things.

I’d far rather eat crusty bread and butter than sickly sweet things.
