Missing Titanic submarine

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

It's very odd

There are no windows, you can't see anything because it's too dark so basically you're looking at a picture on the screen? Which you could do from on shore?

At least in a rocket to space you can see out the window

I get panicky enough on the tube stuck in tunnels let alone one of those!

Yfory · 19/06/2023 20:22

beeonmybonnett obviously not - they are referring to the desperate situation they are in.
Its a regular (pedantic) frustration of mine when people use words to mean things they dont actually mean. Picky pants that I am.

SeaSaltAir · 19/06/2023 20:22

Why did a thread that started out compassionately end up attracting the typical MN anti be kind crew? The internet really is a deranged place.

I hope all the crew (who are just doing their job) and all the passages are found safe and well.

A guy on Twitter who was on an expedition last year said that it has seven different ways to resurface in an emergency if needed.

That makes it even more concerning that it hasn’t resurfaced, but then if it resurfaced miles away from the ship it can’t be opened anyway can it? It doesn’t bear thinking about

I can’t believe that despite having 7 different ways to resurface there only appears to be one way of getting out - which is by someone on the outside opening 17 bolts. Horrific!

The expert on the BBC link said it could drop a weight and float to the surface and wait to be rescued by the launch ship but if it sprung a leak then there was no way of being rescued. Is there a submersible somewhere on earth that could help? The company themselves only have the one that goes that deep. Fingers crossed they have surfaced and can be rescued in time.

But like many words poor has more than one meaning - according to the dictionary one of those means is 'unfortunate, deserving of sympathy'

Awful terrible situation to be in. But with tickets at 250k there is one thing they are not and thats poor. Terrified, frightened for their lives yes but not poor - Poor is so totally not the right word to choose.

I wouldnt cope for 5 minutes on a trip like that (not even at £5 a ticket!) even if all went went throughout.

Are you thinking that if you say "those poor people lost at the bottom of the ocean" it refers to their wealth?

Willmafrockfit · 19/06/2023 20:27

how did they ever get down to the titanic?

Willmafrockfit · 19/06/2023 20:28

i mean someone has already been to the titanic already?
there is a search going on, whether it is a rescue is another issue

Withnailandeye · 19/06/2023 20:31

Bleugh, I watched the film Kursk about the Russian sub disaster literally last week and thought how brave those sailors must have been doing their job. I’d absolutely pay £250k not to get in a submersible and dive 3.8km to a shipwreck. I can’t even imagine what they must be going through but sadly it all looks a bit grim.

Soapyspuds · 19/06/2023 20:33

Terrible way to go. Waiting around for either rescue or the oxygen to run out.

🙁

One woman that went saved her whole life, no car, never married. She wanted to help find the site when she was younger but changed careers. Stop being arses.

That’s so sad. Reminds me of Alanis Morissette ‘ironic’.
‘Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think’

Justchooseone · 19/06/2023 20:36

There is honestly no amount of money you could pay me to make me get on that thing. I really hope the people are ok!!

LadyShimura · 19/06/2023 20:36

Christ. I nearly lost it just going head first into an MRI machine. I wouldnt be able to get in one of those subs.

pompomdaisy · 19/06/2023 20:37

They paid to go in a submarine? Why? My worst nightmare.

Rescue isn’t an option if in more that a few hundred feet of water….
From the BBC:

What might have happened to the missing vessel?

Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent
Prof Alistair Greig from University College London is an expert on submarines. He has worked through a number of scenarios for where the missing submersible might be.
One is that it released a “drop weight” after an emergency, in order to bring it to the surface.
“If there was a power failure and or communication failure, this might have happened, and the submersible would then be bobbing about on the surfacewaiting to be found."
Another scenario, he says, is that the hull was compromised resulting in a leak. “Then the prognosis is not good.”
If it has gone down to the seabed and can’t get back up under its own power, the options - according to Prof Greig - are very limited.
“While the submersible might still be intact, if it is deeper than more than 200m (656ft) there are very few vessels that can get that deep, and certainly not divers.
“The vehicles designed for navy submarine rescue certainly can’t get down to anywhere near the depth of the Titanic.
"And even if they could, I very much doubt that they could attach to the hatch of the tourist submersible.”

Utterly horrifying.

Why don't they put trackers on these things?
Horrific situation, I hope so much they are rescued very soon.

stbrandonsboat · 19/06/2023 20:42

I wonder how many hours of 02 they have.

JackSheepskin · 19/06/2023 20:43

This is my worst nightmare as a claustrophobic. I feel desperately sad for these poor people. No amount of money on earth would have made me go down there.

That was so sad, it often pops randomly into my head even after years of it happening

SadnessHappens · 19/06/2023 20:44

I read actually a few days ago about James Cameron (titanic film director) and how he’s been down to the shipwreck I think six times.

How does he keep going down there and surviving? Surely there must’ve been a safer way for these people to visit the site if James Cameron’s done it multiple times.

tillytoodles1 · 19/06/2023 20:44

The Titanic is a grave yard for all the people who died. Have they no respect?

Apparently it’s all touch screen computers and a PlayStation controller! Wtf!

topnoddy · 19/06/2023 20:48

It's been on the missing list since Sunday morning
