Missing Titanic submarine

1000 replies

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:50

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

Why did a thread that started out compassionately end up attracting the typical MN anti be kind crew? The internet really is a deranged place.

I hope all the crew (who are just doing their job) and all the passages are found safe and well.

It did not start out compassionately.

If you truncate OPs posts under the 'See all' option, this thread is all about indulgent entertainment not compassion. Just do it and see.

Social media at its worst.

stbrandonsboat · 19/06/2023 20:48

I watched a YouTube documentary and it said that the wreck is slowly being eaten by microbes etc. and that it won't be there anymore in around 20 years. I think it would be better if it was no longer there as it's too dangerous to keep visiting. There's no reason to visit it other than morbid curiosity.

The Titanic is a grave yard for all the people who died. Have they no respect?

Obviously not if there's money to be made out of it

stbrandonsboat · 19/06/2023 20:51

I think this visiting of tragic sites is called disaster tourism. It happens near Chernobyl too.

QuintanaRoo · 19/06/2023 20:51

What are the toilet facilities? Do they have enough water?

CovetedAsFuck · 19/06/2023 20:55

People are drawn to narratives of disaster. I mean, here we all are reading this thread - which I guess is not that different an impulse from what draws some people to take it further and physically go to places where terrible things have happened.

I wouldn't do it personally, I'm uncomfortable just reading this tbh

Coconutsandpalmtrees · 19/06/2023 20:56

This is horrible. I hope they are found very soon. I would have thought with all of the modern technology they have today, this could never happen.

I would think other essential life forces would run out long before the water, sadly.

Did you miss the part where I said it was horrifying? I’ve felt sick to my stomach since hearing about this this evening and can’t stop thinking about the people on board and their families. I’m not sure how you’d have preferred for me to portray my compassion.

Yes, I’m discussing specific information regarding how much it cost, that I could think of nothing worse etc but it’s no different than if I was to be speaking to a friend or family member about it in person?

Don't you visit a graveyard to pay respects to loved ones? Why is this different?

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/06/2023 20:59

So in 2021 Hamish Harding set a new world record for travelling to the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, at a depth nearly 3 times deeper than where Titanic rests. He must have thought going to Titanic was going to be a walk in the park compared to that and then this happens 😕

I believe he said at the time that he knew if there was a problem, it didn't matter how much air was left as die as there was no other sub in the world that could go that deep and rescue them and it would take years to build one. He seemed to think the risk was worth it. Have to assume he still feels the same way and maybe he is resigned to his fate if they're not found this time.

Must admit that having been to St Johns and been out on a boat there, nothing would get me in a submersible in those waters. It's the most eastern point of North America and there is just open Atlantic with huge waves and freezing water. At the time it made me shiver thinking what those people on the Titanic must have gone through.

Yikesno · 19/06/2023 20:59

There's something particularly horrific about dying on a submarine. I often think about the Kursk and also about Kim Wall's murder and I'm sure this one will play on my mind now as well - unless they are recovered safe and well which I certainly hope for. I wonder how an experience like this would change a billionaire - I can't imagine they would just go back to focussing on making money after something like this.

Awful terrible situation to be in. But with tickets at 250k there is one thing they are not and thats poor. Terrified, frightened for their lives yes but not poor - Poor is so totally not the right word to choose.

I wouldnt cope for 5 minutes on a trip like that (not even at £5 a ticket!) even if all went went throughout.

You’d better tell Edgar Allan Poe that his last words were incongruous. When he said ‘Lord, help my poor soul’, I don’t think he was referring to the state of his finances.

Igneococcus · 19/06/2023 21:00

I've been to the seafloor at 2000 m in Alvin, the US research sub, and Alvin (at least the old version, there is a new one now) carries weights that it releases in order to resurface. I assume this sub has that option too. I really hope they'll get back up to the surface and that they will be found. Marine scientists and oceanographers will be able to narrow down the search area based on their knowledge of ocean currents and the recent weather at least to some degree.

MotherofGorgons · 19/06/2023 21:00

Good gosh.

Isthisexpected · 19/06/2023 21:01

I've just read that article on CBS news linked before. It is full of potential issues and near misses so I can't believe they've gone ahead.

I hope so much these people are found safely.

topnoddy · 19/06/2023 20:49

And that's what makes it so awful. No respect, just all about the money.

Well given it was 113 years ago it sank I doubt anyone was paying respects to a family member they knew or cherished personally (we had a family member on board that went down with the ship) but I don’t personally think it’s ghoulish to have an interest in the disaster itself at all. Surely that’s why they made a ludicrously expensive film about it, tour it as an exhibition, have the wonderful museum in Belfast about it etc etc. If the ship had just continued on with its planned career as a luxury cruise liner there’d hardly be the same interest in it now.

Yep I read that word. I just don't feel your compassion in your posts. That is something else.

confusedlots · 19/06/2023 21:04

There's a news conference at 9:30pm, probably just telling us what we know already

Princessbananahamock · 19/06/2023 21:05

The people on board must know there’s an issue! It takes 2 hours plus to dive to that depth. I always thought there was some sort of tether or sonar/radar to know where the submersible was. What an awful thing. The wreckage and debris field is a huge area and total darkness.

Are people here restricted about discussing a current news item then?

They must by now. I can’t imagine the state of panic they’ll be in

It appears so. Especially with folk like @A303 marking down my post due to a lack of suitably compassionate adjectives!
