Missing Titanic submarine

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:50

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

Even so, it’s still nice to show a bit of empathy.

It’s terrible for sure.

But it didn’t make me feel anything. That’s just me I guess.

The sinking of that migrant ship last week? Now, that makes my stomach turn, and will for the rest of my life.

beeonmybonnett · 19/06/2023 19:57

in all the nasty comments I’ve read on Facebook they all seem to mention the fact There’s a billionaire / rich people on board. Is it just jealousy. I don’t know why people would be so callous about other humans regardless of their wealth.

So you only have empathy for people you assign value to?

Juat the thought of it is freaking me out, I hope the best brains are planning some kind of rescue attempt

Sadly unless they can get themselves to the surface and be located I doubt much can be done. I suspect it's one of those top of Mt Everest situations but in reverse. 😢

Ohdave · 19/06/2023 19:58

Leaving this thread. What was that saying, if you haven’t got anything nice to say. There’s a novel idea that you don’t need o comment on everything.

Hope they are found safe.

Of course they are rich it costs nearly $250000 a go

Ohdave · 19/06/2023 19:59

One woman that went saved her whole life, no car, never married. She wanted to help find the site when she was younger but changed careers. Stop being arses.

ThankmelaterOkay · 19/06/2023 20:01

@Ohdave

when I first read about it, I didn’t realise it cost that much, or who was on board. I naively thought it wouldn’t be that expensive, guess I hadn’t really considered what it entailed.

It’s not the people per se, it’s the situation. Getting onto a boat as child with your parents to escape brutality/death/worse, versus doing something completely unnecessary. Yeah, I know who I empathise more with.

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:56

Good point! How do you rescue a submarine once it’s found?!

Could use a tow or some kind of inflatable buoyancy thing?

OurChristmasMiracle · 19/06/2023 20:01

I hope they are found safe and I also hope that the lesson from it will be learnt that visiting the depths of the ocean is just not safe. Titanic there or not, it’s not somewhere safe for humans to be.

personally the titanic has always intrigued me and how it happened, but the reality is a lot of questions will never be answered and should the money trying to answer them not be more useful spent elsewhere?

Leftbutcameback · 19/06/2023 20:02

It’s just such a hideous thought being stuck in that scenario. I know people going will understand the risks but having read the article shared above it seems much more risky than I initially thought. I hope for a positive ending (I have seen one expert saying they could be bobbing around on the surface after an emergency ascent but without comms).

YoSof · 19/06/2023 20:02

A guy on Twitter who was on an expedition last year said that it has seven different ways to resurface in an emergency if needed.

That makes it even more concerning that it hasn’t resurfaced, but then if it resurfaced miles away from the ship it can’t be opened anyway can it? It doesn’t bear thinking about

AllPlayedOut · 19/06/2023 20:04

Yeah, I know who I empathise more with.

It's not a competition.

What exactly was the point of posting to say that you don't care anyhow?

Thesearmsofmine · 19/06/2023 20:06

It gives me the heebie jeebies just looking at that capsule. I do hope they are found but it seems unlikely.

It riled me that I never saw a post about the migrant ship last week I guess. Maybe I missed it…

Did you consider starting one or did you not bother, like 99% of those who hop on threads about tragedies to complain about another tragedy not receiving attention even though they seemingly didn't care enough to start one?

BBYBjorn · 19/06/2023 20:11

This is crazy expensive. Moon tours must be cheaper than this! Even with a billionaires money, im flabbergasted at the price

Very scary, I don't think I'd do that if you paid me, never mind paying 1/4 of a million quid.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 19/06/2023 20:01

To be honest, you don’t. Even naval submarines can’t go this deep, very few submarines can, and they are all tiny. The chances of getting one to the area and it actually being able to facilitate any kind of rescue are slim to none unfortunately.

Best case scenario it’s resurfaced and they are found in time to open the hatch. But apparently there is only 96 hours of oxygen aboard and it could literally be anywhere

Yfory · 19/06/2023 20:17

Awful terrible situation to be in. But with tickets at 250k there is one thing they are not and thats poor. Terrified, frightened for their lives yes but not poor - Poor is so totally not the right word to choose.

I wouldnt cope for 5 minutes on a trip like that (not even at £5 a ticket!) even if all went went throughout.

BookLover7777 · 19/06/2023 20:17

I am so claustrophobic I feel panicky just thinking about how they must be feeling. It doesn't matter how much they paid or why, they're still humans facing the very real possibility of dying from suffocation miles thousands of feet below the sea. They must be terror stricken.

True. I’m an arsehole. You got me.

I don’t think people are referring to their wealth when they refer to them as ‘poor’

SunnyEgg · 19/06/2023 20:20

meditrina · 19/06/2023 19:25

From that article, it sounds as if the submersible is capable of reaching the surface, but has to be retrieved by the mothership, as there would be no way for crew/passengers to open the (17 bolted) hatch.

And it sounds like the submersible pings the mothership whilst it's at great depth, and ship/submersible can exchange messages when it's nearer the surface (eg confirming locations and RV arrangements).

<awaits arrival of a MNetter who is expert in this field, who will say - hopefully trenchantly - if I've understood correctly, or if the post is fluent bollocks>

Being bolted in like that so even if they’re bobbing on the ocean surface not found makes me feel dizzy

Ah ok thank you.

My husband said it's not a bad death in terms of ways to go. They will just fall asleep, it won't be painful.

But I'm holding out hope for them. Their poor families will be worried sick :(

PinkPondQueen · 19/06/2023 20:21

So in 2021 Hamish Harding set a new world record for travelling to the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, at a depth nearly 3 times deeper than where Titanic rests. He must have thought going to Titanic was going to be a walk in the park compared to that and then this happens 😕
