What has the handyman done with my nightdress?!

I can't find my nightie anywhere! Had a handyman round this morning just to address a couple of patches of damp, one of them being in my bedroom, on the wall close to the en suite.

I hang my nightie and dressing gown on the back of the en suite door every morning, and on the other side of the door I have an old evening dress that belonged to my dm.

I was rushing out this morning and didn't think about moving the clothes off the door. Came back earlier to find he's moved my dressing gown and my dm's dress over to the hooks on the bedroom door. But there's no sign of my nightie.

Im not suggesting for a minute anything dodgy has gone on but - where is it?! Did I, without thinking, put it somewhere? If so, I still can't find it!

I haven't a clue about your nightdress, I'm just so relieved it's not your knickers that are missing.

Has anybody suggested she check?

kazlau · 15/06/2023 17:48

I once had a tradesman use my nightie to dry his hands and he put it in the laundry basket. I was quite horrified. I chucked it out if I’m honest. Never felt I wanted to wear it again.

I think it's gone. My wedding knickers vanished at some point - blue lacey things, some tradie or another..... will never know. also a book of fairytales. I have probably had many other small meaningless things nicked over the years by visitors to my house but those two items were significant to me so I noticed and still mourn their loss.

You reminded me. I took some children's books in to a group of Students I was teaching who were all planning to become Nannies. One book, a very special one, was stolen. I still feel upset. It stopped me sharing anything personal with Students after that and worse, I kept having suspicions about who I thought it was that stole it.

Not being able to trust someone is horrible.

The evil builder I had practically gave me a nervous breakdown. But that's another story not appropriate for here.

I just wondered, if our OP had this guy back and put another nighty on the door, say one from a charity shop so you haven't any care about it, you might be able to see if he did it again. Set up a secret camera.... Or put itching powder in the nighty...

Sanshen · 15/06/2023 18:10

I'm so looking forward to the handyman replying. This is too much fun to miss.

Sanshen · 15/06/2023 18:13

Many years ago we had a whole pile of towels stolen after a handyman visit. Really mystifying why he thought that was a good idea. A nightie is something else though - it's intensely personal and intimate.

Sanshen · 15/06/2023 18:14

And a few eyebrows!

Heyhoitsme · 15/06/2023 18:19

Hate to put this out there but many years ago my son had a job delivering furniture. He was a student at the time. There was at least three on each job. They were delivering bedroom furniture to a famous singer. My son told me one of the men stole a pair of pants from the dirty washing basket. I've always thought this was sickening but hopefully the woman didn't realise what had happened.

You got off light @MsFannySqueers. After the outside of our block of flats was painted we found a paint can behind the shed that someone had taken a poo in and then kindly sealed the lid.

I do know a Handyman who pees in a bottle in his van.

Gandalfsthong · 15/06/2023 18:21

my Dad was in the navy and Mum used to travel with him before we were born. On one trip one of the crew used to steal her bras. Just saying…..

I think that would be better described as a negligee than a nightie. Just so he knows what you mean when you text him 😂

A negligée goes over the nightie, like a short, floaty robe.

I used to wear my mum’s to do ‘shows’ when I was little 😂.

Mrsgreen100 · 15/06/2023 18:24

Ohhhh dear , maybe he’s wearing it now 🤣🤣
seriously, though I had a lodger years ago, I kept missing underwear and then those days stockings and suspenders etc
wasn’t until I had a leak in the house that myself and my
friend the handy man and I found all my missing stuff under the lodger’s bed !!!
he had been dressing up in them he had left the stockings attached to the suspender belt
and you could see they were worn 🤮
love life

So the navy allow spouses to travel along? You mean on the vessels?

Ellyess · 15/06/2023 18:26

Heyhoitsme. I hope her Laundry Maid or Daily Help didn't get the blame.

Maireas · 15/06/2023 18:28

Oh the maid always gets the blame. The mistress had mislaid her silk peignoir and the housemaid gets dismissed.
Has your housemaid come with a good reference, OP?

My daughter had her M in L staying, they went shopping. DD bought bras. Plain every-day ones. DD's M in L asked to see them. She kept them. When it came time for M in L to pack and travel home, my poor DD had to ask her MinL to return her bras! It was not even as if they were the same size, as they noticeably were not.

Kteeb1 · 15/06/2023 18:33

Just kiss goodbye to it! Don't message him. Either he didn't take it and you will be embarrassed or he did and he won't tell you. I lost my kindle once and was convinced one of the descriptors must have taken it, found it about 6 months later in the airing cupboard. These things happen. At the most ask your friend if anything has ever happened, but chances are it will turn up

Ellyess · 15/06/2023 18:36

Heyhoitsme

You said they were at the home of a " famous singer". I just thought such a person might have a different sort of Cleaner helping her in her house. For all I know it might have been an Opera Singer although that does not necessarily suggest anyone is "posh".

Danceswithweasels · 15/06/2023 18:38

Sometimes things mysteriously return. I have recently had builders in, I have a chair in my bedroom which is essentially a chairobe, since lockdown I only wear proper bras when I go out and there was a black bra hanging on the back, not in clear view. After two builders had spent the morning making good my window, said bra disappeared, threw everything off the chair, no sign. The following Monday when they returned so did my favourite bra, neatly hanging over the back of the chair. Can only imagine what adventures it had had 😐

Ellyess · 15/06/2023 18:39

sorry Heyhoitsme, I meant to address that to Maireas ·. I'm getting knackered. Long day...

Ellyess · 15/06/2023 18:41

Maireas ·
I was thinking of the person's missing pants belonging to, as we were told, a "famous singer", so I thought maybe she had a different kind of help in the house.....

Maybe he rinsed it out and it’s on the line 😂
