What has the handyman done with my nightdress?!

Leolly · 13/06/2023 19:44

I can't find my nightie anywhere! Had a handyman round this morning just to address a couple of patches of damp, one of them being in my bedroom, on the wall close to the en suite.

I hang my nightie and dressing gown on the back of the en suite door every morning, and on the other side of the door I have an old evening dress that belonged to my dm.

I was rushing out this morning and didn't think about moving the clothes off the door. Came back earlier to find he's moved my dressing gown and my dm's dress over to the hooks on the bedroom door. But there's no sign of my nightie.

Im not suggesting for a minute anything dodgy has gone on but - where is it?! Did I, without thinking, put it somewhere? If so, I still can't find it!

@intheatticwiththematches my theory is that he left a massive skid mark on the sheet and was too mortified to leave it for you to find, so took it with him.

And with that, the searching abruptly ends. 🫣

jellyminelli · 14/06/2023 16:24

He couldn't find the damp patch so he made one of his own on your nightie.

They don't call him the hand job man for nowt

Sunshineishere1988 · 14/06/2023 16:32

I would just text and ask - you know its not dodgy so just say you left something on a hanger on the door and cant find it now. Inside the wardrobe? Maybe he thought it was a dress???

@BunnyBettChetwynnd was there still paint in the paint tin? I'm trying not to think about how the discovery of the poo came about ..,

No it was empty, well apart from the poo and it was a big 5l tin, definitely not a Farrow and Ball tester pot.

I found it behind the shed when I was gardening and like a ruddy fool I opened it. I suppose I was lucky he'd not used my nighty as loo roll and put that in too.

Does she know its not dodgy?

If it helps, my husband once stole a ladies silky dressing gown in a panic.

You know you're dealing with a strange situation when the above statement is of help.

I’ve had the best time reading this thread and comments like yours. Haven’t laughed this much in a long time. Thank you, all! 🤣❤️

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 14/06/2023 16:51

This thread is funny BUT I think I'd be so annoyed that I'd have to text to ask if he'd seen it.

azlazee1 · 14/06/2023 17:01

CALL HIM!

Mumsnut · 13/06/2023 21:23

Could Bottom Sheet Man and Negligee Man be the same person?

he is gradually assembling a love nest

could have half-inched all sorts by now

some poor bugger’s going to lose their heart-shaped waterbed …

That really made me laugh. I have had underwear pinched off the line, god there are some gross men about.

Leolly · 14/06/2023 17:09

I have asked dc, yes. They looked at me blankly and asked why I thought they'd want my nights.

I told my friend who recommended him about the mysterious disappearance - she says she'll ask him about it 😬

Can you actually get heart shaped waterbeds? I quite fancy one of them.

I am already borderline phobic about workmen, the minute they turn up I am longing for them to clear off. Had a builder do work on my house years ago, all fine and good. Then one afternoon when the work had ended up he turned up on some pretext and flung his arms around me and declared his undying love for me! I pushed him away and he them offered me money to sleep with him as I was a single mum and he thought this might sway me!!! Showed him the door and mercifully he cleared off

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 14/06/2023 17:20

Oh I wonder what he'll say? Probably better coming from a third party.

His wife is enjoying her new nightie.

CALL HIM!

Tell him he's famous; the whole of Mumsnet needs to know what he did to the nightie.

Dontworkmondays · 14/06/2023 17:56

I don’t think you’re asking in the right place. How would we know?

Dontworkmondays · 14/06/2023 17:56

I don’t think you’re asking in the right place. How would we know?

Because of our collective lifetime experience of nighty-clad handymen with sniffing tendencies.

Doone21 · 14/06/2023 18:56

What a horrible thing to say, why assume the worst? You are probably making the poster totally paranoid for no reason.
If it had gone missing on a day when no one was in you'd think nothing of it, just be annoyed. Stuff gets mislaid all the time, everyone does it.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 14/06/2023 19:08

Despite the annoying disappearance of your nighty I have to admit that I am really enjoying some of the answers in this thread. Please OP let us know of any updates. I really hope you do find it.

Years and years ago, like 30 odd when I was a teenager, I remember watching some kind of complaints programme/ watchdog type TV. A woman had secretly filmed her workman going through her laundry basket and sniffing her used underwear. I was absolutely horrified as I'd never been exposed to men's depravity. I've never forgotten that clip. Now, however, it's the first thing I thought of and I'd bet my life this guys a sniffer.

🤢

WonderingWanda · 14/06/2023 19:19

I'm picturing a Mr Bean sort of escapade where he knocked over the tin of paint, grabbed your nightie in a panic to mop it up and has now hidden the evidence somewhere ridiculous....have you checked your toilet still flushes 🤔

Leolly · 14/06/2023 16:11

I thought I'd already posted this reply - if I have and I just can't see it, apologies!

I just wanted to say to @RavingStone that I'm glad she knows other people like me! I have my dm's dress permanently on my door because it evokes many pleasant memories of her. It's very "of it's time" and she had it made for a dinner dance sometime in the 70's. I happen to think it's a lovely dress, and if I could get into it, I would a absolutely wear it (not sure where to, mind - dinner dances are a bit thin on the ground nowadays!)

And on the other door in my bedroom I have one of dh's favourite jackets. It gives me great comfort seeing it there.

That's lovely

Checkyourpocketsnow · 14/06/2023 19:32

Talking of vanishing nighties, my lovely plumber tells a story of a lady customer who was still in hers when he arrived one morning to finish installing her new shower. He didn't think much of it, after all it was first thing in the morning and their relationship to that point had been strictly professional. Until now. He asked her to test the strength of the jet while he fiddled with something. He turned round to find she'd whipped off the nightie and was completely naked under the shower.
He said he legged it.

Lainie · 14/06/2023 19:49

This is a bit boring, but I bought some overalls for gardening and they have velcro on the pockets on the legs. Since its only flimsy maybe he caught it on his velcro, then saw it thinking it was his mrs nightie or from a pile of cloths in his van or something? x

QuietlyWonderful · 14/06/2023 19:58

He asked her to test the strength of the jet while he fiddled with something.

If he actually used those words, he was asking for trouble, wasn't he.
