What has the handyman done with my nightdress?!

Leolly · 13/06/2023 19:44

I can't find my nightie anywhere! Had a handyman round this morning just to address a couple of patches of damp, one of them being in my bedroom, on the wall close to the en suite.

I hang my nightie and dressing gown on the back of the en suite door every morning, and on the other side of the door I have an old evening dress that belonged to my dm.

I was rushing out this morning and didn't think about moving the clothes off the door. Came back earlier to find he's moved my dressing gown and my dm's dress over to the hooks on the bedroom door. But there's no sign of my nightie.

Im not suggesting for a minute anything dodgy has gone on but - where is it?! Did I, without thinking, put it somewhere? If so, I still can't find it!

He's got his favourite power tool nestled in it.
Those are valuable bits of kit and get easily scratched.

“Power tool” is that what they’re calling it now? 😉

ensayers · 15/06/2023 19:03

Did he leave any rubbish behind? Or put it in your wheelie bin? Might be worth having a look through any rubbish his whizzed out. Maybe it got torn or damaged or spilt on and instead of owning up to what could be an awkward conversation, he just binned it and hoped you'd never notice?

Pepsi2001 · 15/06/2023 19:03

Maybe he's wearing it these hot nights lol xx

MysteryBelle · 15/06/2023 19:08

I would be hunting down the handyman to find out what happened. Op, what’s going on? Have you found out anything?

Sorrynotsorry22 · 15/06/2023 19:10

Voice of reason here
Please tell.me you've checked EVERYWHERE!
Under bed, every inch of your room.+ washer, dryer every cupboard , drawer & in your bed.
Invariablythese things turn up in odd places.

We don't want reason on this thread!

Leolly · 15/06/2023 19:40

I have checked absolutely everywhere, yes.

Friend has messaged him but he hasn't replied yet.

Have you looked under the dress as well? My DH would move stuff but not put it logically together...

burnoutbabe · 15/06/2023 19:44

Used to mop up water spill and then dropped out of bathroom window.

Indeed it is, Underminer. I gather variable speed models are particularly desirable but enthusiasm on the part of the operator can lead to under-utilisation of low speed functions.

Batalax · 15/06/2023 20:07

Go borrow a granny nighty and see if that disappears tomorrow!

I don’t want to be thinking about what he’s whizzed out….

Are you a similar size as the handyman?

This made me LOL 😂😂

WunWun · 15/06/2023 22:03

I think this is all gross and it was probably a bad idea to let a potential pervert know that you know that about him.

elizaagain · 16/06/2023 07:29

Another vote for I suspect he's stolen it. Obviously - you have to have an extremely good look round your house for it (including in illogical places he might have accidentally put it). But, having done that, then (if it's still not appeared) you'll have no option other than to never employ him again for anything (in case he fancies stealing something else to go with it). But one obviously can't employ someone again if you know they're a thief. The only other explanation for its disappearance would go into rather more "esoteric" realms for the reason - ie there were a couple of things that disappeared and reappeared in my last house and there was certainly the time when a kitchen measuring jug (of all things) just disappeared without trace. Now I knew for a fact no-one else was involved in that - as I lived on my own at that point and hadnt had any workmen in or anything and that jug was simply not there in its usual place one time I wanted it. Now I'm a stubborn wotname sometimes and so, after I'd had a darn good look for it everywhere without success, I went to that spot on particular shelf I knew I kept it to get it and then had to pick up my bigger one instead every time I wanted it, as I "knew" there was no way it could have just vanished. Several months later - I went to that shelf again - and there it was! There was no remotely logical explanation whatsoever as to how it could have vanished from that shelf and then reappeared there some months later - but that was an older house and odd things did occasionally happen in it (part of the reason why I moved - as I do like to deal with logical things only in my own home....and the house was unnerving me a bit).

Or maybe he should know people are on to him and he can’t get away with his behaviour (if indeed guilty)

kazlau · 16/06/2023 11:25

@Leolly has your friend got back to you? I’m on edge waiting lol

I absolutely think it should be reported to the police/trading standards or whoever deals with tradesmen. Not the OP's friend sending him a text.

The tone of the OP's posts suggests she thinks it's all a bit of a laugh.

JaneBeyre · 16/06/2023 12:00

I don't think she thinks it's a bit of a laugh, I think she's genuinely puzzled and maybe trying to laugh it off a bit. But it's gross.

Having had a pair of knickers just vanish - random pair that happened to have sentimental value to me, otherwise wouldn't have noticed - I know that men working in your house (yes yes NAMALT) will feel entitled to poke through drawers and look at and even steal underwear.

He will assume he's gotten away with it because it's not something women would generally discuss. Until MN came along of course....

caznjoe53 · 16/06/2023 13:45

I find it odd thst your friend has to message him. Why can't you ask him yourself

Deathraystare · 16/06/2023 15:09

Would you really want it back now????

BriocheBums · 16/06/2023 16:09

He's going to light some candles, put on some music and do a bit of drilling into it later
