Anyone local know what’s going on?

Looks like a huge response.

No need for the personal attack.

I’d say ‘letting your mask slip’ constitutes a personal attack, wouldn’t you?

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 14:20

@Loopylalalou calm down, I've not speculated,at all. The irony of it is YOU are! You are assuming A LOT! Weird

Dangeliss · 13/06/2023 14:35

If major news sites aren't saying what's going on, the likelihood of some randoms like us on Mumsnet knowing more is pretty slim. Very weird to go looking for juicy deets on social media.

The people coming to threads like these to post "updates" like "police have confirmed - three dead" like some frontline reporter - that's beyond misguided, that's just sad.

But here you are posting on the thread.

Only one person arrested is that still the case?

Maybe terrorist, maybe drug related or something I guess we’ll find out at some point

Mollylegs · 13/06/2023 14:42

@BloodyHellKen Bloody Nora, I read that wrong and thought you'd said you met a student nurse who was doing this. I was thinking I hope he doesn't look after me!!

I’m not against helping Ukraine but we have put ourselves in the firing line by doing so. That’s a fact and we may well find there will be consequences in the future because of it.

That's all very noble but the truth is we (and others) help Ukraine very much out of self interest. Appeasing people like Putin doesn't tend to end well and I guess a lot of us would rather the war is fought in Ukraine not western Europe.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/06/2023 14:49

Looks like an Islamic terror attack to me

There's nothing "Islamic" about terror attacks, TheFrendo, though it's true they disproportionately involve men who call themselves muslims

If the attackers turn out to be people who pretend to follow Islam - and we don't know that yet - I've no doubt many of their wider community will be equally grieved, not least because of the effect it'll have on them

Lifeomars · 13/06/2023 15:35

I live in Nottingham, in fact I live very close to a street where a cordon is in place due to the presence of a van that the police are or were searching, I am also reasonably close to the road where there has been a massive armed police raid. Whole city is disrupted, we do not know at this stage who is responsible or what motivated them and there is some very unhelpful speculation on this thread. All I know is that 3 people have lost their lives and this is terrible. The other thing I am aware of is that people are shocked and upset. Apart from living close to where some of the events occurred I ama slo very familiar with and have often walked down the streets where other events have happened. It is really unsettling and I have felt quite distressed today.

I don’t often post on Mumsnet. I’m probably quite a bit older than most (64) and I’m fairly content that I have a balanced view of life and its’ happenings due to lived experience. My employment has supported is, often involving making tough decisions that may impact on others.
I find I’m regularly dismayed by the posts made by those obviously enmeshed in the social media phenomenon - speculating on the might be’s, not caring about realities, often without any wider experience of the many types of communities that make up life in our world.
So girlies, try and grow up a little. Terrorism doesn’t equal Muslim. It equals someone that has had their mind bent by their own interpretation of an ideology - and whatever it’s meant in the past (Irish, blacks, etc) the one sure thing is that all perpetrators were nutters,
And heed the message given above. Whatever May be passing the time in your live today will involve other people in various bad ways. Feel sorrow, not speculation. And don’t be a smart arse.

@AngelAurora apparently there are loads and oriole have been taken to A&E at QMC. My colleagues mum is a nurse there. They are pulling nurses from wards

Chinny reckon. The victim number is in the single digits (still sad of course).

Fightyouforthatpie · 13/06/2023 15:43

Ilkeston as in the road involved and the place the road leads to is pronounced "ill-kes-ton" (or ilson in extreme local dialect) Imagine if the BBC was reporting about somewhere in the Home Counties and kept getting this wrong.

jamontoast6589 · 13/06/2023 16:04

The University of Nottingham's Grad Ball has been cancelled in light of the incident. Understandable, given the tragic circumstances, but a disappointment for those final year students who have had their university experience so heavily disrupted by Covid and strikes.

That's a shame, hopefully it will be rescheduled but seems the right decision seen as some outlets are now reporting 2 of the victims were students targeted at random. Tragic.

jamontoast6589 · 13/06/2023 16:11

The main upset I think is coming from the fact the ball was cancelled with only around an hour to go before the coach was scheduled to leave. But yes, very understandable. I believe the two murdered on Ilkeston were first year students. Just so tragic all round.

cptartapp · 13/06/2023 16:11

DS at uni of Notts now says two victims are friends of a friend. Both students, one a fresher.
Unsubstantiated of course.
Absolutely dreadful situation whatever.

It's been confirmed now sadly

SunnyEgg · 13/06/2023 16:13

That’s so sad Sad

lifeturnsonadime · 13/06/2023 16:19

Awful that anyone was killed but so so sad that these were university students.

Human nature to speculate.

In evolutionary terms speculation and gossip are actually good survive traits.

supersonicginandtonic · 13/06/2023 16:23

@BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers they activated a plan in case there were more than expected.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 13/06/2023 16:30

My son’s at Nottingham. Just finished his second year. He lives in the road adjacent to Ilkeston Road where 2 were killed and he walked home in the small hours last night having been clubbing.

They are all very shocked.

I also live extremely close to there as well. So sad to
Learn they are university students. Ilkeston Road is a bit dodgy. But generally a safe area. I've never felt unsafe living in Lenton. I think it's absolutely right that the grad ball is cancelled. It would be incredibly bad taste to go ahead. Currently our managers are trying to work out how to get the night staff in. Given the transport issues.

fromdownwest · 13/06/2023 16:31

I spent 4 years in Nottingham, and walked that road, and Derby road many many times. Asbolutley heartbreaking, that an innocent student walked in the same steps as me, and sadly will no more.

No time for speculation, but utterly utterly tragic.
