What do people do regarding these robots on the roads/paths?

Little white robots do deliveries here..

See them zooming around everywhere but this afternoon one stopped at a zebra crossing, I was driving so stopped to let it cross but it just sat there....I waited, car in opposite direction just drove across.

As it hadn't moved to cross I just drove on. What's correct action?

The robots have GPS trackers and cameras so that the robot can "see" That feed can be seen at the control centre.

I don't like that idea at all!

I don't like that idea at all!

If they didn't "see", they wouldn't be able to avoid obstacles.

Omg this is amazing!!! The future is here. It's over 🙀😹😹

And I thought 'short-circuit' was just a sci-fi film....seems it was real after all!

Muncha · 07/06/2023 20:06

They weight a ton, very hard to tip over. They are very common around here.

Can’t see them coming here to Glasgow. They’ll either be set alight or commandeered by drug dealers

Yes. Definitely can see them being used for drug deals.

Vitriolinsanity · 07/06/2023 20:29

Are they defeated by steps like the Daleks?

PocketfulOfMiracles · 07/06/2023 20:41

DD lives close to Starship, the home of the robots. I was on the phone to her one night and I could hear a commotion. She said she'd call me back....

Turned out one had fallen over outside the house and was yelling for help in it's own screechy way. She righted him with the help of her DH and off he went on his way.
Adorable little things and they fascinate me every time I visit.

summerfinn · 07/06/2023 21:06

Kick them hard

Before an area goes "live", they map the streets and take note of the dropped kerbs so the robots know where to cross the road.

Bin day must be a nightmare though

I feel quite left out of this conversation as I've never seen one (except once in Docklands).

Around here they would all be mugged and chucked in the canal 😭

We saw a few around Santa Monica and Los Angeles and we all said that unfortunately they wouldn't last long around here (SW London). I think they are really cute, the ones we saw in the States were different colours and had different names.Coco was bright pink for example.😀

crackofdoom · 07/06/2023 21:47

I've never seen one either, pretty sure there's none in Cornwall. So, that's the summer holiday sorted then- Milton Keynes it is 😆

But are you saying that someone in a control room is controlling each robot? Just like a remote control toy? Sounds expensive!
I don't like the idea of increasing surveillance generally. Obviously these robots pick up a lot of irrelevant information while going about their delivery business.

They can't do steps. They work well in MK because there's a really good pavement and "redway" (wide cycle paths running adjacent to roads but with underpasses at roundabouts/junctions) network so they can get around large swathes of the city without too much trouble. This also means there's usually enough space for wheelchairs etc to get around them.

They are quite small but have LED "flags" sticking up to make them more noticeable/less likely to be tripped over. And they talk to you!

IndeedDanielJackson · 07/06/2023 22:03

Oh I love these! Whenever I go home to MK I love seeing them trundling along the redway. Dd2 named them all Gerald (I can't remember why)!

lookingforMolly · 07/06/2023 22:45

I've never heard of them!

@wildinthecountry That’s exactly what our cat did when we got a Roomba. Hopped on and then sat on it doing victory laps around the kitchen 😂 Best kids’ party entertainer ever.

😂😂😂

Woofappreciationday · 07/06/2023 23:16

We have them and surprisingly you dont see a lot of damage to them and i dont live in a particularly naice area. I aliken them the rats now as there are so many and they just are everywhere in my local area. They are also super expensive to buy stuff from but useful if your like me and disabled so cannot walk too far to the Coop.

Definitely cheaper and easier to hire teenagers...

TheHandmaiden · 07/06/2023 23:21

Eventually a cat will climb on one like a massive Roomba ride and the empire of CatRobotia will commence

MaidOfSteel · 07/06/2023 23:26

WTH?!

CeliaNorth · 07/06/2023 23:36

Before you know it, you'll have Lt Cdr Data wanting to prove they're sentient.
