What are you ‘I’m old’ references that younger folk might not understand ?
I’ll start: ‘too orangey for crows, it’s just for me and my dog’

‘Will it be chips or jacket spuds, will it be salad or frozen peas ?’
I still sing that at tea time

Will it be mushrooms(?), fried onion rings? You'll have to wait and see!

JRHartleysmum · 08/06/2023 18:30

Hope it’s chips it’s chips
we hope it’s chips it’s chips

"Ohhhhh-uh" here when someone was in trouble.
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales,
Inside, outside Puppydogs' tails!

ChocChipHandbag · 08/06/2023 18:41

Yes, skipping was such great fun but I agree, jumping in was in important skill to learn. Do you remember there was an easy side and a hard side to jump in from? Some games needed you to have mastered both.

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 18:54

Yes skipping was very good for us without realising it . Social skills that no one was left out, singing songs (memory) compassion when someone fell over , not leaving people out , taking turns and there is also the fitness .

Clapping songs -
"I went to a Chinese restaurant to buy a loaf of bread, bread, bread.
He wrapped it up with a five pound note and this is what he said, said, said.
My name is Elvis Presley, girls are sexy, sitting in the car, drinking shandy... wowee!"

So inappropriate for six year olds 🤣

See also, ip, dip rhymes to work out how was 'it' "Ip dip, dog shit" I got a slap round the legs for teaching my brother that one!

VioletCharlotte · 08/06/2023 18:58

Oh and also, not sure if this has been posted already, but "Itchy chin" or "Chinny reckon"

InMySpareTime · 08/06/2023 18:59

We had
Ip Dip Doo
The cat's got the flu
The monkey's got the chickenpox
So out goes you

There were additions like O-U-T spells out (if you wanted to fix it so someone else went out)

I’d forgotten about those. We had slightly different versions - the end of the Chinese restaurant one was “my name is Elvis Presley, girls are sexy, sitting in the back seat drinking Pepsi”.

Counting rhymes were:

Ip dip sky blue, who’s it not you
Not because you’re dirty, not because you’re clean
My mother says you’re the fairy queen

and (this will not be spelled correctly!)

Ibba dibba dation, my operation, how many people at the station? 1, 2, 3 (etc)… you’re it

Photo stories in My Guy, Cathy and Claire problems in Jackie, sing lyrics in Smash Hits. Feeling grown up when you progressed to Just 17

Mrsjayy · 08/06/2023 20:12

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 17:44

It does now make me understand why children used to be so skinny . We never used to really sit still as kids did we ?

No not really we had to be out the house most of the day and not doing fun activities either just get out and play!

My sister is tail end of Gen x and she was allowed in the house 😄

'Bertha, lovely Bertha, sometimes I think you're a dream - when we tell you what you have to do, you always turn the goods out, always turn the goods out, we can depend upon you.'

In other words, yes Grin (off to Youtube to see how much of that I got right)

I’m so impressed! I could only remember the first line!

StarShapedWindow · 08/06/2023 21:24

FullOfBiscuit · 08/06/2023 17:35

Another skipping one-

On a mountain stands a lady
Who she is I do not know
All she wants is gold and silver
All she wants is a nice young man
Up pops.......(a boy from school)
She loves him, she loves him not, she loves him.......

(If you liked the boy they named you'd accidentally on purpose trip on the skipping rope on 'she loves him' bit 😆

My friend at primary school taught me this and when I came home singing it my dad was really interested and thought it might have been sung for hundreds of years because the lyrics were so old fashioned. No idea if he was right. So lovely to remember it again. 😊

i was astonished at myself! It's the tunes that help me remember, I think.

We had 'ip dip, dog shit, you trod in it.' Nice!

If you were making up with someone after a falling out, you joined hands (possibly crossed over) and waved them up and down chanting, 'make friends, make friends, never never break friends, if you do, you'll catch the flu and that will be the end of you'.

The girls used to chant 'We protest, boys are a pest, flush them down the lavatory and hope for the best'

If there was some kind of delay to something happening at school (and we were with a teacher who would tolerate it), we'd sing 'Why are we waiting, we are suffocating' to the tune of O Come All Ye Faithful (the first few bars of it anyway).

FlutteryButterfly · 08/06/2023 22:51

UrsulaBelle · 08/06/2023 08:49

We had a clapping game that went,
'Under the bramble bushes,
Down by the sea,
We'll get married,
And start a fam il ee,
With a boy for you,
And a girl for me,
Oh so happy,
We shall be,
Under the bramble bushes,
Down by the sea.

Teenage Suzy Ooo, ah, I lost my bra, I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car.

Also a skipping song,
Not last night, but the night before,
24 robbers came knocking at my door.

@UrsulaBelle -

When Suzy was a school girl, a school girl Suzy was- Miss, Miss I can't do this my Knickers are I an awful twist!

There was an amazing thread on here about 6 months ago where someone described a vague memory of a childhood story and asked people to help her identify the book- within about ten posts someone had found it in a 1980s Mandy Annual and even posted a picture of it from the actual annual that she had just bought in a charity shop! Cue hundreds of posts about Mandy, Bunty, Judy etc. Mumsnet at its best.

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 23:27

@ChocChipHandbag That is quite brilliant . I have a Playschool annual I bought some years ago on Ebay . I love Playschool but most footage was lost years ago at a bbc storing facility .
