What are you ‘I’m old’ references that younger folk might not understand ?
I’ll start: ‘too orangey for crows, it’s just for me and my dog’

Loved big Bertha!

CoffeeAndFagToStartTheDay · 08/06/2023 15:44

I remember Bertha.

playground game/song (its a bit hazy) you needed at least 6 people it was a song about sleeping beauty, 1 person was the princess then the others would be thorns surrounding her then prince cuts them down, then you make arches in pairs as the Prince and Princess skip under them.

The only bit I remember singing was
"the princesses slept for a hundred years a hundred years, a hundred years.

Does anyone remember Bertha? A programme on CBBC about a factory?

'Bertha, lovely Bertha, sometimes I think you're a dream - when we tell you what you have to do, you always turn the goods out, always turn the goods out, we can depend upon you.'

In other words, yes Grin (off to Youtube to see how much of that I got right)

InMySpareTime · 08/06/2023 16:25

@CoffeeAndFagToStartTheDay
There was a Princess long ago, long ago, long ago, there was a princess long ago, long aaaago.
She lived up in a great high tower...
A wicked witch came flying by...
She taught the princess how to spin...
She pricked fair Rosie's tiny hand...
She fell asleep for a hundred years...
The thorns and brambles grew around...
A handsome Prince came riding by...
He chopped the thorns and brambles down...
He kissed fair Rosie's tiny hand...
The wedding bells began to ring...
And everybody's happy now...

I might have missed a verse somewhere, that's from memory.

SulisMinerva · 08/06/2023 16:46

I remember the clapping games and French elastic ones too.

One clapping one I remember is:

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
with silver buttons, buttons, buttons
all down her back, back, back
She cannot read, read, read
She cannot write, write, write
But she can smoke, smoke, smoke
On her father’s pipe, pipe, pipe
Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
climbed up the stairs, stairs, stairs
and bumped her head, head, head
and now she’s dead!

It was done in pairs and I can still remember the actions.

I love this thread, keep coming back to it!
Skipping games - the big ship sails on the alley-alley-oh

Clapping games: Cee Cee my baby, come out and play with me, and bring your Dolly sweet, climb up my apple tree..

Of course, so many of these things seem to have a much more sinister tint now as I write them down in the twilight of my years!

Ohyoudodoyou · 08/06/2023 17:08

Klackers!
Little rocket bombs with caps in.

@CherryRipe1 We used to skip with two ropes in Scotland in the 70's, so I have no answers why in Scotland , and all the Girls in school could do it , just because .

FullOfBiscuit · 08/06/2023 17:35

Another skipping one-

On a mountain stands a lady
Who she is I do not know
All she wants is gold and silver
All she wants is a nice young man
Up pops.......(a boy from school)
She loves him, she loves him not, she loves him.......

(If you liked the boy they named you'd accidentally on purpose trip on the skipping rope on 'she loves him' bit 😆

SequinDiscoBiscuits · 08/06/2023 17:40

All that way just to pick up a chicken!

Flowery Twats

You'll never get it out!!

OohvaaaVu

JRHartleysmum · 08/06/2023 17:40

our skipping song :
I know a little boy, he was double jointed
Gave me a kiss and made me disappointed
gave me another to match the other
by gum (name) I’ll tell your mother
for kissing (name) down by the river
how many times did you kiss him last night
1, 2 , 3, (turn rope faster until they’re out)

@InMySpareTime

Thank you, it was one of favourites!

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 17:41

I have reported this thread as deserves to skip all way the to Classics .😁

FullOfBiscuit · 08/06/2023 17:44

Clapping games: Cee Cee my baby, come out and play with me, and bring your Dolly sweet, climb up my apple tree..

Ours was different to that but I can't remember the first verse. The second verse was:
Cee Cee my playmate I cannot play with you, my Dolly's got the flu, chicken pox and measles too.

And then something about being friends for ever more more more.

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 17:44

It does now make me understand why children used to be so skinny . We never used to really sit still as kids did we ?

Just gone down a rabbit hole of looking up the generations...'the lost generation' brought a lump to my throat.

Back on track and:
Snap, crackle and pop.

Anyone remember The Wonder Years?

I had a poster of Kevin (Fred savage) on my wall.. my first crush

Do you remember the really annoying kids who 'couldn't jump in' so we'd all have to stop the rope and the song would lose momentum. Still eye roll at the memories 😀

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 18:12

I really used to love the skipping games when someone in class had got their hands on a huge rope and the whole class of girls ( no boys) played skipping (no one left out) . There was a huge line of girls waiting their turn to jump in . It really was great times .😀
