How much would you expect to pay for this?

If you're in a cafe and order chicken mayonnaise sandwiches but ask to add a little chopped red onion to the sandwich.

How much would you expect to pay for the addition of red onion?

no no no no - a teacake in West Yorks has sultanas in it, it's sweet and is served toasted with lashings of good butter. A bread cake is what you have as a savoury sandwich. (Unless you are my weird sibling who liked savoury fillings in a teacake 🤢)

I really like cheese on a toasted teacake (although we always called it a teasted toecake in my house). That doesn’t seem weird to me, what on earth does your brother have in it?

Magnoliainbloom · 04/06/2023 16:18

Wow! Legally they can’t charge for something they haven’t advertised. You don’t have the info to enter into a contract with with them, as trivial as red onions are. I’ve used this argument and it works.

well @WomanOfSteel , he just used it instead of a bread cake for everything - I think tuna Mayo is the weirdest I remember!

Bemyclementine · 04/06/2023 17:43

50p tops. I don't think onion is an extra filling, it's not half a tin of tuna or an egg is it.

Ilovecleaning · 04/06/2023 17:48

Nothing. But I know a charge would be added and I’d expect it to be 50p.

KateKateLee · 04/06/2023 17:53

50p, but I'm guessing its something extortionate like £2.50.

Greenbeanmcgee · 04/06/2023 11:13

It was obviously a mistake

It wasn't a mistake. The price was correct according to the manager.

They are clearly embarrassed by it, otherwise they would display it on the menu as £2.95 per additional item, where they are encouraging you to order off menu. Since they are encouraging people to do that it doesn't feel like they should be charging extra at all.

Airspice · 04/06/2023 18:00

Personally if I owned such an establishment I wouldn’t charge extra for a bit of red onion, but I would say 50p is acceptable. £2.95??? WT……!

Bottomlesspockets · 04/06/2023 18:11

No-one is questioning £7.50 for a sandwich in the first place ? They saw you coming !!!

CheshireCat1 · 04/06/2023 18:13

I wouldn’t expect to pay anything extra.

porridgeisbae · 04/06/2023 18:14

80p.

No-one is questioning £7.50 for a sandwich in the first place ? They saw you coming !!!

@Bottomlesspockets Not unusual if it comes with chips/fries etc.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 04/06/2023 18:14

London - add £1 to £1.20

Juced · 04/06/2023 18:15

Jesus Christ and I was fuming at being charged £5 for a glass of water in The Ivy which is also overrated!!

butterpuffed · 04/06/2023 18:24

£2.95 is crazy . I bought a [whole!] red onion in Sainsbury's last week ~ 11p .

Bobbielikespeas · 04/06/2023 18:39

Haha 2.95 for extra onions is the sort of thing that if you post on face book you suddenly get a load of defenders going that it is perfectly reasonable and that it's a hard time for businesses.

Well to be fair it was probably an artisan sandwich on artisan bread with artisan onions and in an artisan building.

LoisLane66 · 04/06/2023 18:42

50p max incl labour costs 😂 but would really cost it as 20p.

SharonEllis · 04/06/2023 18:42

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 17:43

Thanks all. I appreciate the responses.

So £2.95 for a bit of chopped onion is a little excessive then?

Ridiculous! I'd expect an extra half a sandwich for that. I hope there's somewhere you can leave a review to warn others.

cakewench · 04/06/2023 18:46

£2.95!! That's amazing!

We go to a local cafe every Sunday because they encourage customisation (on certain items, sandwiches being one) and my son loves it. The pricing on the board is very transparent. Items which cost .75p are all in one list and items costing £1.50 are all in another. (I'm making up those amounts; suspect they have gone up post covid) I would actually laugh if red onion were £2.95!

That's approximately 40% of the price of the original sandwich!

staceyflack · 04/06/2023 18:55

That's fkg ludicrous

RaininSummer · 04/06/2023 19:02

So over a tenner for a ruddy sandwich? No wonder places are going bust.

Misty333 · 04/06/2023 19:03

50p although it’s already on the menu and onion is not that expensive they should charge 20p

Georgyporky · 04/06/2023 19:05

I once ordered a "prawn & coleslaw" sarnie in Glasgow.
One shrimp - not even a prawn.
I eventually got a refund after a "free & frank" discussion with the wankers behind the counter.

RecklessGoddess · 04/06/2023 19:05

£1 at the most, I worked in cafes for years, and we never charged more than that. In fact we charged less, but that was a couple of years ago, so £1 is a reasonable price these days.

AxolotlEars · 04/06/2023 19:14

50p
