Cooked breakfast - what’s in yours?

We have guests for the bank holiday weekend so DH popped to the butchers for sausages, bacon, black pudding, haggis and eggs. I was planning to do mushrooms, hash browns, beans, potato scones and toast too. I am a put everything on the table and help yourself kind of host so whatever combination of the above is upto the individual.

However, a debate has began amongst us all - does a tomato belong on a cooked breakfast?

Tinned tomatoes over fresh tomatoes. Anyone who says otherwise votes Tory.

Small tomatoes on the vine, roasted in olive oil and herbs. Mmm

I loathe tomatoes anywhere near a cooked breakfast, my husband prefers tinned ones. There is no hard and fast rule. Just like pineapple on pizza. Have both fresh and tinned in, and take a vote. Or, just say in advance, sorry we’ve no tomatoes, you’ll just have to do without. Hardly a dealbreaker.

But, in absolute frank honesty, I think people with those sacs of nasty fruit/vegetable (another futile argument) on their breakfast have got some neurons misfiring!!

Your husband sounds fantastic

Mine would be bacon, sausage, fried egg, hash browns, fried bread and tin tomtoes. Never eaten black pudding or haggis. This thread is making me really hungry and it always tastes better when someone else makes it.

Sal

YES on the tomatoes

2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 hash browns, an egg, half a grilled tomato or plum tomatoes and some baked beans all with toast and butter.

Terrible tomatoing

AlltheFs · 27/05/2023 21:20

I like:

Scrambled egg
Mushrooms
Bacon
Sausages
Hash Browns
Toast

Sometimes I like beans but not always. I like my breakfast “dry”
No tomatoes
Black pudding I’m ambivalent about, I eat it if it’s there.

midsomermurderess · 27/05/2023 21:27

What doesn't belong is a hash brown. Otherwise it's all good.

I don't like tomatoes but Foster son does, so I give him what he likes.

Newestname002 · 27/05/2023 21:57

All of these (excluding black pudding), but I also like creamy scrambled eggs on buttered Irish soda bread or thickly sliced toasted granary bread, smoked salmon and a pot of good tea. 🌹

Taytocrisps · 27/05/2023 22:02

I don't like tomatoes so I'd leave them out.

My ideal cooked breakfast consists of:

Sausages
Rashers
White pudding (I don't like black)
Fried eggs
Beans
Toast
Orange juice
Coffee

If I wanted a cooked breakfast but cba to do the works, I'd do poached eggs on toast with avocado on the side.

Therealjudgejudy · 27/05/2023 22:04

Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, white pudding, plum tomatoes, toast with real butter, pot of tea and a glass of orange or apple juice.

ChangedNameNotGay · 27/05/2023 22:08

If we're making it at home we usually have:
Grilled:
Smoked bacon medallions
Sausages
White pudding
Black pudding
Tomato halves with herbs

Fried:
Eggs cooked in butter

Oven:
Hash browns

Hob:
Baked beans

Toast & butter
Proper Coffee
Fresh orange juice

We don't have one very often but we lobe it when we do!

continentallentil · 27/05/2023 22:15

NOT baked beans is the main thing

Tessisme · 27/05/2023 22:22

What's a potato farl?

@GoodChat They are mashed potato, mixed with enough flour to form a dough, bit of salt added, squashed into a flat round shape, then divided into four triangles with round edges (if that makes sense!) and cooked on a griddle or heavy pan. Or ... if you're in NI you just buy them in Tesco! They'll either be the traditional triangular shape or square. You fry them in the pan with the rest of your fry up. Also known as potato bread. Farl just describes the quadrant shape.

Dinosaurus86 · 27/05/2023 22:40

We definitely have tomato and have also taken to adding spinach… (we think it works).

Clevs · 27/05/2023 22:46

2 bacon, 1 fried egg, 1 sausage, mushrooms, hash brown, black pudding, grilled tomato and brown sauce. Sometimes a slice of buttered white toast to mop up the juices, it just depends how hungry I am.

The bacon is preferably unsmoked thick cut butchers bacon, the sausage is a Cumberland butchers sausage. No supermarket rubbish because the bacon shrivels to nothing and the sausages aren't meaty enough.

Absolutely! Vile things 🤮

Theoldwoman · 27/05/2023 22:48

Yes, it sure does!

cheapskatemum · 27/05/2023 23:05

Definitely need a tomato with that. Personally I like a bit of bubble & squeak too.

echt · 28/05/2023 05:08

Definitely tomato, though tinned.

I have a cooked breakfast once a week on Sundays, the porridge made with water and seasonal fruit the other six days is not IMHO a cooked breakfast.

Today's was a large grilled "artisan" sausage whose make-up I have forgotten, with a poached egg on top of half tin of plum tomatoes on sourdough toast. HP sauce. Large coffee.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 28/05/2023 06:12

That sounds amazing!

Eomt · 28/05/2023 06:28

My mouth is watering and I want to stay at your house op, you sound like a fantastic host.
In our house, tomato is always served and is always pushed to the side of the plate and discarded by all but my husband, who then hoovers up everyone else's.
Beans are delicious but should never touch eggs because that makes a slimy mess. You have to make a toast barrier between the two.
Bacon, fried eggs and fried potatoes is the best. My grandpa used to make this for me when I was a little girl.
I'm very disturbed by the thought of spinach on a cooked breakfast. Anyone doing this needs to take a serious look at themselves!

MathsNervous · 28/05/2023 06:39

Here goes:

Fried egg, fried smoked bacon, square sausage, link sausage, fried mushrooms, fried tomatoes, sliced haggis, sliced black pudding, sliced fruit pudding, tattie scone, hash browns, baked beans and toast.

And don't eat again for a fortnight 😂

MathsNervous · 28/05/2023 06:45

You do win the internet for this weekend 🤣
