Cooked breakfast - what’s in yours?

We have guests for the bank holiday weekend so DH popped to the butchers for sausages, bacon, black pudding, haggis and eggs. I was planning to do mushrooms, hash browns, beans, potato scones and toast too. I am a put everything on the table and help yourself kind of host so whatever combination of the above is upto the individual.

However, a debate has began amongst us all - does a tomato belong on a cooked breakfast?

What's a potato farl?

I think these are the same as potato scones.

Yeah sure you can have a grilled tomato on there but I’m mystified why you’ve not asked whether beans belong?

Noooooooooooo! They sure don’t.

I personally would put baked beans in room 101 but my weird family love them.

I like a wee stack - tattie scone; back bacon rasher; black pudding; poached egg.
Tomatoes on the vine grilled, as a garnish, but not necessary.

Teapot of very hot tea, rack of toast and butter .

You've hit me thinking now if the perfect cooked breakfast - I only really have them if I'm travelling sooo

Poached eggs - controversially up to 3 - because the lovely runny yolks are heaven
Toast - white, from an unsliced loaf with real salted butter - lots of it (toast and butter)
Bacon - properly cooked so it's a bit crispy and the fat has rendered - can't stand flabby bacon
Grilled beef tomato - and I mean grilled/fried - not waved in the general direction of some heat
Mushrooms - ideally portobello, cooked in butter
Beans
If there is some friend bread going I'll have a bit

Ketchup and brown sauce, plus some Worcestershire for the beans

Not fussed about but will happily eat
Sausages
Black pudding
Hash browns

Must be a big, big mug of proper tea.

Thin tomato sausage, smoked streaky bacon, fried tinned tomatoes, fried egg, fried bread done last so it absorbs some of the tomato juices. Tomato sausage impossible to get in east anglia so a rare treat. Ive got some mail order from south yorkshire as a special treat so ekeing them out. Yum

Favouritefruits · 27/05/2023 19:15

Yes to tomato and I like a potato cake too!

gingercat02 · 27/05/2023 19:15

I personally hate tomatoes, but yes, if you're doing a full breakfast, you have to have the whole shebang
Bacon eggs sausages black pudding mushrooms tomatoes potato bread. I'm Irish, so traditionally, no beans, but I have learned to like them in full English.
In Ireland, fried bread or fried soda would be compulsory too, and maybe white pudding.

luckylavender · 27/05/2023 19:17

Just toast for me.

Notateacheranymore · 27/05/2023 19:17

I loathe tomatoes anywhere near a cooked breakfast, my husband prefers tinned ones. There is no hard and fast rule. Just like pineapple on pizza. Have both fresh and tinned in, and take a vote. Or, just say in advance, sorry we’ve no tomatoes, you’ll just have to do without. Hardly a dealbreaker.

But, in absolute frank honesty, I think people with those sacs of nasty fruit/vegetable (another futile argument) on their breakfast have got some neurons misfiring!!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 27/05/2023 19:19

For me I'd do poached eggs grilled beef tomatoes or tinned plum tomatoes and the crispiest possible bacon. Washed down with iced apple juice.

If I was cooking for guests
Fried eggs (or if they wanted them cooked another way I'd be happy to oblige)
Bacon
Sausages
Mushrooms
Tomatoes
Beans
Toast

I do not get fried bread. Yuck

Halloumi and avocado on a fry up is the most middle class thing I've ever read Grin

Middle class = yes
Absolutely delicious = also yes

ChiChaNaYubi · 27/05/2023 19:24

The best fry up I’ve ever had was in this weird little hippy yurt. It was:

Sourdough toast
crisoy streaky bacon
chipolatas
a huge garlic portobello mushroom
corn fritter
bakrd beans in a little pot
spinach
homemade houmus
poached eggs

It was so so so nice. And it didn’t feel heavy and greasy.

Fixesplease · 27/05/2023 19:26

Where's the Eggy bread/ French toast for dipping?

ElizabethBest · 27/05/2023 19:37

@GoodChat they like it on fancy sourdough too, the pretentious twats Grin

MrsCatE · 27/05/2023 19:42

Yes to grilled / seared tomatoes - absolutely no to tinned tomatoes, beans or hash browns. Why have them latter crept in when bubble and squeak seem to have been forgotten? Yes, I understand dependent on leftovers but bloody hell, frozen hash browns? Ps real American hash browns were basically, Bubble too.

EversoDisorganised · 27/05/2023 19:44

Tomato yes, beans never ever.

Upwiththelark76 · 27/05/2023 19:45

Sausage bacon eggs beans mushroom and of course tomato!

EversoDisorganised · 27/05/2023 19:45

Tomato must be fresh, halved and seared on the griddle, never cooked to mush and definitely never tinned, that would be even worse than baked beans

MonumentalLentil · 27/05/2023 19:45

Since all the vegetarian suasages now taste like crap and the fake bacon is sweet and over-processed mine is:
Tomatoes
Fried egg
Vegetable croquet type thing if desperate but they are also mostly crap now
Beans
Mushrooms
Toast
Halloumi
Chips if in the local cafe

I tend to choose the Mediterranean breakfast.

MyCatsSlave · 27/05/2023 19:46

Yes to tomatoes, along with
Smoked bacon, good sausage, Scottish black pudding, haggis, eggs, potato scone, mushrooms, beans and toast on the side

MrsCatE · 27/05/2023 19:48

Ooh - if this goes into best breakfast territory toss up between Turkish (Olives, Cheese, flatbreads, Labneh, eggs, honey, salad stuff and southern indian. Latter probably go for Dosa.

MadEyeMoodysEye · 27/05/2023 19:49

I'm vegan and a cooked breakfast is one of my favourite meals. My perfect combo is:
Veggie sausages
Field/portobello mushroom
Tinned plum tomatoes
Caulifower hash browns
Tofu scramble with spinach and nutritional yeast
Toast

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 27/05/2023 19:49

For me: bacon, sausage, black pudding, haggis. Potato scones, soda farl, poached egg. Mushrooms and beans. Husband would not have haggis. Husband would have tinned tomatoes too, not fresh. I'd give them a miss entirely.

We rarely get haggis on a cooked breakfast where we are but sometimes when we're up north it's on the menu and I love it.

EmeraldFox · 27/05/2023 19:51

I do bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomato, and smashed avo sourdough toast

FOJN · 27/05/2023 19:52

Eggs
Quorn sausage patties
Hash browns (Aldi breakfast hash browns for preference)
Beans
Mushrooms (fried in butter)
Oven roasted cherry tomatoes on the vine
Toast
Brown sauce or sriracha.
Tea, lots of.
