About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

I thought Helvellyn (Lake District mountain) was in Wales too

DH says that region was part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde and linguistically has a lot of associations with Wales. Now you know.

Cwm in Welsh means valley. Cumbria has linguistically Welsh roots. Sorry, couldn't help it!

Muncha · 24/05/2023 21:40

Snap for Carlisle.

I used to think Torquay was a place in Spain 😳

Ok, jumping on the geography thing, and I didn't grow up in the uk so that's my excuse, but I always thought that Penzance was a mythical pirate place.

I'd only heard about it in children's stories Blush

I'd heard about this big music festival in Woodstock, I thought it was the Woodstock near Oxford.

I thought this for years I grew up near there and it was only much later I realised how unlikely it was, luckily I looked it up rather than ask someone Blush

That there's an artist who paints a shroud for each person's death is directly related to the DWP stopping or refuse benefits he's done at least 25.

How many people's waists UK geography idcrap

What??

BodegaSushi · 24/05/2023 21:45

LaMaG · 24/05/2023 20:31

And Haiti and Dominican Republic are on the same island??

Yes, Hispaniola.

Ok a separate note I always confuse Dominican Republic and Dominica

I've always thought Gretna Green was a London suburb Blush
I never realized those runaways in films were going up to Scotland to get hitched!

I have explanations!
It’s because it sounds like a cross between Bethnal Green and Greenwich!
Also, Skegness like Loch Ness
And Carlisle because of Robert Carlyle the Scottish actor???? Ok, maybe clutching at straws for the last one!

Iamtheonwandlonely · 24/05/2023 21:49

Barry White and Billy Joel sing the same song.
Just the way you are
I knew they both sang but I thought it was different so GS.
I only copped it the other day when 2 radio stations each played the different version nearly back to back.
It's so obvious now

The Skegness monster is any hen party attendee in a pleather mini-skirt and leopard print top going full-on shots and blue drink...

Me too!

Backtoblack1 · 24/05/2023 21:45

What??

1 - that there's an artist who paints a shroud for each person who has died as a direct result of an adverse benefits decision. There are at least 25 of them;

2 - the sheer number of people whose knowledge of UK geography is crap.

(I already knew I'm quite good at interpreting something badly-written. This one has at least three reasons - simple typo, autocarrot, and sub-optimal sentence structure.)

Ceebeegee · 24/05/2023 21:58

I thought Londonderry was the county that London was in .

And I thought "bought" and "brought " were the same words/same meaning.

battgirlatheart · 24/05/2023 21:59

playing blockbuster one Xmas and it was what H can you catch off the north east coast of Scotland
she shouted haggis and wondered why we all wet ourselves
(answer was herring)

SugarNspices · 24/05/2023 22:00

Literally just read on another thread what scarify a lawn means. I wondered why mine wash so pat hung after putting grass seeds on it

RocketIceLollie · 24/05/2023 22:00

That electric cars have a green strip on their number plates. My boy told me this last weekend.

MrsJamieFraser22 · 24/05/2023 22:01

I was also under the impression that Brunei was in the Middle East only found out it was in Borneo when we were looking at going to the Malaysian part for a holiday. Similar to others I was thrown by the fact there was a Sultan and seem to recall from my youth that the Sultan of Brunei was the richest man in the world at the time

What do you mean, Pontefract isn’t in Wales??!! 😳

It's in Yorkshire

FrostieBoabby · 24/05/2023 22:03

As a young teenager I tagged along on a family day trip to "Grantshouse" which is a little coastal village south of Edinburgh and not the name of some random relative called Grant who happened to live in a house.

But... Why would anyone think that there an artist who paints a shroud for each person who has died as a direct result of an adverse benefits decision? And why are there are at least 25 of them??

I had no idea that Brunei was in Borneo - I had always assumed it was in the Middle East somewhere.

Where’s Borneo again?
