About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

Fablon! When I lived in Australia there was a brand of sticky tape called Durex. My supervisor suggested I put an office poster up using 4 bits of Durex.

And, as an English schoolchild in Australia for a while I was told pimp meant to sneak or tell tales, inform on schoolmates.

I wasn't a 'pimp'. It was in an English homework task.... my parents were bemused by the comprehension question set.

Lollies were sweets. Paddlepops were ice lollies

Oh no! 😅 What about Manchester (bed linen & towels)!

No. Sticky-back plastic was not Sellotape. Sticky-back plastic was the big sheets of clear, sticky plastic used to cover books etc. Sticky tape was Sellotape.

Wasn't the whole 'sticky backed plastic' thing (that people laugh about now) because the BBC hated mentioning brands and didn't want to say 'Fablon'? Interestingly, I see that the 'Did Blue Peter mean Sellotape?' question was raised on Mumsnet in 2007.

It must have worked then, because I've useful plenty of sticky backed plastic in my time, but I've never heard of Fablon!

Same! I've only heard Fablon mentioned here. Definitely used sticky-backed plastic though.

@diddl , genericization.

Thank you for that. Sadly, I always think it's the beginning of the end for a product - my hoover is a Dyson and my jeep is a Land Cruiser. Sony eventually lost protection for the brand name Walkman because it had become a generic term.

According to Wickipedia The Washington family was a wealthy Virginia planter family that had made its fortune through land speculation and the cultivation of tobacco.[16] Washington's great-grandfather John Washington emigrated in 1656[17] from Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, England,

My salt/pepper grinders, which are identical in colour and shape- have a different coloured insert at the very bottom. I've had them 5yrs and this sounds absolutely bonkers- but in all that time, I've sniffed the grinding end to work out which is pepper! DH pointed out last week that the bottom is coloured black and the other white 😂
