About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

That raisins are … grapes.
That blew my mind … at the age of 24.
I had to ring my mum the second I made the discovery to demand why she never told me.
(Turned out it had never come up for her either).

Could the Pontefract thing be mixed up with Pontepandy from Fireman Sam which is in Wales?? I think anyway, never watched it. I work Wakefield now so am in Ponty loads.

Pontefract comes from the Latin for Broken Bridge, useful for pub quizes!

sahm9 · 24/05/2023 22:12

I was 25 when I found out raisins were dried grapes!!! I’m ashamed to say…

Also growing up my mother would say ‘keep Britain tidy’ meaning keep the house tidy… I thought she was saying ‘keep brit and tidy’ I never knew what she meant 🤣

I found out something in mumsnet while lurking a few days ago. I knew peppers could have baby peppers, as I have often been cutting open a pepper and there would be a tiny one inside it . But I didn't know how that happened until I saw a thread on here. I had seen bunches of carrots that looked anatomically correct before, but this was the first pepper with a Willy I had ever seen! 😀😀

Well, I am today years old when I found out this tidbit about peppers. Where is the thread so I can learn more?

Crispsandchocolate4 · 24/05/2023 22:14

When I was younger I thought Timbuktu was a made up place and meant far away in space not an actual place in Mali. I was so convinced it was just in space that I still find it hard to believe!

I don't understand the comment about tabs at the ends of cling film.

Okay, so I found that thread. I don't know if I should be amused or grossed out.

I have found peppers within peppers before and wondered how they got there.

Nor is Scotch Corner (found that out a few years ago)

As a child my brother wondered where Random was, the place where they went to draw the winners of competitions, The winner was drawn at Random.

My mother felt sorry for the horse Bar as it seemed to run on every race! On the TV they give the odds for the better fancied horses then lump the rest together as Bar.

I don't understand the comment about tabs at the ends of cling film.

On the ends of clingfilm boxes there are tabs to push in that hold the roll in place.

longwayoff · 24/05/2023 20:35

Over time, i have bought, probably, hundreds of rolls of cling film and foil. I have just found out that every pack has a pair of push in tabs, one at either end of the pack. These tabs hold the roll in place. WHY HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE?

OMG!! This is life changing 😬🤣

That the black pupil in your eye is a hole. A HOLE.

Yes, it's the Sultanate bit that threw me as well.

The Sultan of Brunei used to be the world's richest man, not sure now with tech billionaires.

That electric cars have a green strip on their number plates. My boy told me this last weekend.

My husband told me this the other day! I asked him why I was seeing so many cars with green strips and if it was a new thing instead of the EU country strips 🙈

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 24/05/2023 22:18

I've only found out this year that the petrol pump symbol on my speedometer is to highlight which side my fuel tank is on

Been driving 30 years

Where’s Borneo again?

East of Indonesia.

Those who thought hump day was sex, didn't you think it was TMI when your colleagues are like 'phew, hump day at last'

NamechangerGamechangerrr · 24/05/2023 22:19

I just found out there's a place called Skegness.

Haha yes I wondered that too! Surely that's made for some awkward conversations.

847arc · 24/05/2023 22:22

I’d always thought that Dunkirk was on the south coast of England!

TheChosenTwo · 24/05/2023 22:22

Oh my days, so many of us learning new things every day!
I must say there are some absolute corkers here, the big change to Welwyn Garden City and the haggis fish 😂
cling film boxes do have tabs but they’re pretty shit, I ended up buying one of those hard plastic boxes of it and now just get the refills.

Here's one that might flush out a few misconceptions. One (and only one) of the following is an island - do you know which?

  • The city of Portmouth
  • Gibraltar
Cornflowers35 · 24/05/2023 22:23

I'm sure I heard recently that a CLUB sandwich stood for chicken, lettuce under bacon and therefore not something that originated in the club house. (I've never had one and don't play golf. We used to pop to one for lunch as it was opposite my old office)

Bananalanacake · 24/05/2023 22:23

This thing in America called Superbowl, I thought it was a ten pin bowling competition.
