I have a pigeon nesting just outside my sitting room window and she is so cute

We have watched her and her partner build their (rickety) nest and she has been sitting on it for about a week.

She looks into our sitting room like we are her television and entertainment (what else to do I guess).

Every now and then a magpie comes in and tries to threaten her and we bang on the window to ward the magpie off. She seems to know we are helping. (I like to think anyway).

She is currently having a nap. I got up this morning at 5.30 and she was absolutely fast asleep for a good while.

I said to DH; 'What are we going to do tomorrow when we are working and she needs help to scare the magpie?'. He said he will bring his laptop up to the sitting room (he WFH) so he can be on guard.

I really love her.

Bless!

I’m also tired of cleaning 😆

How lovely! I often wonder how pigeons survive, they're so crap at building nests!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/05/2023 16:58

just as long she doesn’t start cooing at 4.30 am ( like mine do).

good luck with the hatchlings,,OP, this is so sweet.

What a lovely post and photo. Have you named her? Keep sharing how she gets on...

oooh! naming! I'll get DH onto it. He is quite good at naming our local wildlife, although. We have 'FF' (Favourite Fox') and Mrs Favourite Fox and Little Miss Blacklegs (another fox).

I love pigeons.

Mind the magpies! One stole our pigeon friends egg from the tree in our garden last week.

They are truly shit parents as well, they mean well but definitely need social services intervention. They are prolific breeders, and breed all year.

yes they are awful. I think this pigeon pair were here last year too. The magpie (also sure it is the same one) ate an egg and a hatchling and then we found a not quite feathered larger hatchling badly injured and took it to the local bird sanctuary.

Very much hoping we can avoid all of that this year.

Aww how lovely OP! “Did You Know” (fun fact alert) that pigeons nest and lay eggs most of the year round and usually lay 2 eggs only. Although peak nesting is around now.

Their nests look so uncomfortable and rickety “I know, let’s find the stiffest shortest twigs we can find and just throw them in a pile and sit on top”

AnnWithoutAnnie · 21/05/2023 17:12

I have 3 nesting pairs & I love watching them.

i have a balcony, so their nests are about the same height, unfortunately they're in the neighbours trees & a few feet away.

i 'donate' lots of bits for their nest! 😍

Snooks1971 · 21/05/2023 17:13

Ooh cross post @VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji re the breeding!

That's exactly it. DH was looking at the nest today and said contemplatively; 'They really are incompetent at nest building aren't they?'.

I will admit I bridled at the criticism and told him sniffily that the pigeons probably knew what they were doing.

His reply; 'Not noticeably'.

Is there a df? He could be Cool-io..

TiredOfCleaning · 21/05/2023 17:17

There is a DF but he last seen was earlier today flying into our window with a twig in his beak.

Love this! ❤️❤️ My son aged 11 has autism and pigeons are his specialist thing, he’s obsessed! I’ll show him the pic! We have a wood pigeon nest in a tree in our garden and it’s just outside his bedroom window. He spends ages watching them. We now have a fledgling and the Mum / Dad walks around our garden with it feeding it.

BlueThursday · 21/05/2023 17:18

Aw 🥰 she looks like a meryl to me

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 21/05/2023 17:18

The pigeons we have in our towns and cities are descendants from the ones we were encouraged to keep for food, eggs and messaging. So they are in fact, war hero’s and deserve much more respect

Esjolaol · 21/05/2023 17:20

Be careful what you wish for !
We have pigeons above our bedroom window and they are absolutely revolting . The combination of the noise at sunrise and pigeon shit that is ruining our paint work ,shit over garden path and paving has made are seriously consider moving!
We have tried every deterrent and spent a fortune trying to get rid of the vermin!
