I have a pigeon nesting just outside my sitting room window and she is so cute

We have watched her and her partner build their (rickety) nest and she has been sitting on it for about a week.

She looks into our sitting room like we are her television and entertainment (what else to do I guess).

Every now and then a magpie comes in and tries to threaten her and we bang on the window to ward the magpie off. She seems to know we are helping. (I like to think anyway).

She is currently having a nap. I got up this morning at 5.30 and she was absolutely fast asleep for a good while.

I said to DH; 'What are we going to do tomorrow when we are working and she needs help to scare the magpie?'. He said he will bring his laptop up to the sitting room (he WFH) so he can be on guard.

I really love her.

I am so excited to share this thread with DD (11) in the morning, who is another pigeon obsessive. A kindly local gentleman has let her adopt two in his loft that we visit, and she also has Winky pictured here (named after heroic WWII pigeon) who is currently off at pigeon Hogwarts being trained for the summer races. They are beautiful and much maligned birds. Doves get all the good PR but, as DD points out, Noah must have sent out a pigeon, because doves don't come back...which makes the pigeon the bird of peace Halo

aaaawwwww! 😍

She is asleep facing the other direction so I can only see her fluffy butt.

I am in the office today [boo hiss] so will update when I am home.

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

Wonderful thread!

Bad Pigeon nests also affect their Mauritian relatives (the pink Pigeon).
I remember reading in Gerald Durrels biography that he joined in an effort to conserve the Pink Pigeon, who were near extinct, because they build their nests on the weakest ends of branches. They had teams of people, waiting day and night with nets, ready to catch the Pigeon eggs when they fell out of the nests 😁

Awww, I LOVE this post!
Pigeons are the best

We have a garden pigeon who sits on the thinnest branches of our apple tree waving around in the wind, his/her name is pigeon pie 🥧
They have just found a mate so now we have to come up with another original name 🐦🐦

Adorable .. Used to have house Martins nesting under my eaves

Nannyfannybanny · 22/05/2023 18:27

We have a rose arch, big gaps, not very big, watched the pigeons making their rubbish nest in there, all the twigs falling out. DH put a hanging basket minus the chain in there for them..they pair for life, which I think is sweet. My DD gave me tickets for Bletchley Park for my Birthday last year . We're 10 minutes away from the sea,get gulls pooing in the car,but heyho. Been watching a crow eyeing up the nest in progress.

I think pigeons are really funny birds, we have two wood pigeons that come to our garden every day. They are most put out if I've not put any bird seed out. They wind my dog up as well by sitting on the fence looking at him.

When my dd was little she had a stint in hospital and her room looked out into a little bit of hospital roof which had two pigeons nesting on it. It really made us laugh watching them try and build the most pathetic nest in the world 😂 it had two sticks!!

It really cheered us up at what was an otherwise horrible time.

CherryMaple · 22/05/2023 19:56

We have several wood pigeons. Our favourite is one with a white spot on his back called Clever Chris - because he has learned how to eat out of our (deliberately tricky) bird feeder which was intended for the smaller birds.

A while ago we had a pigeon with lots of brown plumage - presumably a racer. She was called Chocolate Box 😊

JamieNotJames · 22/05/2023 19:59

We've got a pair of wood pigeons nesting in our garden. The tree is so thick that I can't see their nest but they're definitely in there.
They're often picking up twigs from our garden and clumsily dragging it in to the tree.
They do however often sit on the fence right next to our window having a snuggle. I do have to avert my eyes quite frequently though! BlushSmile

There are a pair of nesting gulls a few chimneys down. I'm obsessively looking for signs of little lives everyday.
The dad does try to scavenge in our garden, scaring the poor pigeons and little birds away from their seeds. He's pretty damn intimidating!

They are truly shit parents as well, they mean well but definitely need social services intervention. They are prolific breeders, and breed all year.

We had pigeons trying to build a nest in our..bird bath , they did give up in the end .

Mrs wood pigeon that nests outside my window is a really good mum, even when she had laid her 2eggs she was still feeding the 2 tweens from last hatching, they can fly by that stage but the parents carry on feeding them for a while.
They sometimes co-parent too so that can take turns to sit on the nest/hatchlings.
The nest gets reused each year so it's not so flimsy now, a collared dove has also borrowed it to raise her young.
I love watching them but it's also so heartbreaking, last years chick was nearing to fledging and was gone one morning so either fell out in wind or magpies snatched.

Muddycob · 23/05/2023 02:13

These are last year's wood pigeons, it's only couple of weeks from hatching to being nearly full size with just the beak that gives them away as youngsters.

I never noticed before but they have cute expressions in these pics , I am going to look at pigeons in a new way now!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/05/2023 04:21

When we were still in the U.K. our local wood pigeons used to sing the song of their people, using our chimney as a megaphone.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/05/2023 04:41

We have a couple in our tree on the side garden, have been coming back for a couple of years, we love them.

I call them Pearl and Howard.

We have lots of wood pigeons and I feed them daily.

That reminds me. I must clean the fence off with the hose again.

My nan - a Betty - taught us that one. Another is: The sky is - orange.
