I have a pigeon nesting just outside my sitting room window and she is so cute

We have watched her and her partner build their (rickety) nest and she has been sitting on it for about a week.

She looks into our sitting room like we are her television and entertainment (what else to do I guess).

Every now and then a magpie comes in and tries to threaten her and we bang on the window to ward the magpie off. She seems to know we are helping. (I like to think anyway).

She is currently having a nap. I got up this morning at 5.30 and she was absolutely fast asleep for a good while.

I said to DH; 'What are we going to do tomorrow when we are working and she needs help to scare the magpie?'. He said he will bring his laptop up to the sitting room (he WFH) so he can be on guard.

I really love her.

Aww. We used to have a remarkably tidy woodpigeon nest in our back garden. She would spend hours looking for the right twigs and stalks. Twat of a neighbour destroyed it, one spring, saying that magpies had moved in. She just built a bigger and better one, in the same place.

We had to take the tree down, as it was diseased and in danger of ending up in our dining room 🙁

Covids take the eggs and will drop them in order to crack them, if you have a birdbath be aware of this as they often drop them in. I tried to hatch an egg from ours last year, although think it was a dove rather than a pigeon. Rarely you can save one if you get inside, dry and warm in time, check for cracks and even more rarely can seal a crack in time to save the chick.

I have found squabs on the ground, too late to save them, so cute and like Martin Brothers birds. Please continue to keep your pigeon family safe. (And watch out for the foxes).

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/05/2023 18:15

My Gran always used to say that wood pigeons were saying "Take TWO cows, Davey!" and she had some complicated story about a man called Davey and his cows to back it up ( which I'm now doubting was the rock solid Devonish lore she insisted it to be Grin)

i have pigeons nesting on my loft and in the trees out side ive got lots of birds where i live its peacefull to watch then .

SirVixofVixHall · 21/05/2023 18:20

Wood pigeons don’t nest all year round. They normally only have two chicks, sometimes only one. They are terrible nest builders compared to many other species, but clearly the nests do what they need too.
Good luck to your pair !

spudulike1 · 21/05/2023 18:22

We have a pair that hang around our garden. They are called Bubble and Squeak.

TiredOfCleaning · 21/05/2023 18:44

DH has named the pigeons 'Anjelica and Marmaduke'.

Considering his previous most creative offering was 'Woody' I think he has developed performance anxiety over the fact the thread is now on MN'. Hmm

We have two pairs of collared doves living in some kind of communal parenting system. I saw a magpie fly by my window with an egg in its beak swiftly followed by a dove. They crashed through the tangled foliage of hawthorn, honeysuckle and cherry trees continuing their battle.

Magpie numbers have increased considerably in recent years and they take eggs and chicks from the vulnerable species. They are like the rats were to puffins.

Just too many of them about.

Wishing4sunshine · 21/05/2023 18:49

Wait till the eggs have hatched...the babies are UGLY. Like unbelievably ugly. 😂

MySugarBabyLove · 21/05/2023 19:04

I can’t imagine people encouraging rats into their gardens in the same way they encourage pigeons, and pigeons are vermin in the same way that rats are.

I love the tits and the robins and finches and actively discourage the pigeons.

TabithaTitanium · 21/05/2023 19:07

I remember reading about wood pigeons saying “my toe hurts, Betty, my toe hurts, Betty” on here years ago and I can never unhear it now, it’s so annoying 😩

isthismylifenow · 21/05/2023 19:16

I used to quite like pigeons, at times they seem cute. Like yours OP.

But then that all changed one day when I heard a bloody great racket outside my bedroom window...where I witnessed a pigeon murder. I grabbed my phone to video it as I knew no one would believe me. It was awful. The one just went for the other and pecked it to death. When I watched the video back, there was me shouting at it to stop it. 🙈

The worst thing was, I had to clean up the murder scene later on.

I hope yours remains cute but I admit, my feelings have changed towards them. It was bloody brutal.

You don't think that really humans are vermin. The most destructive, deadly and toxic living beings ever to exist?

Be aware that pigeon poo is acidic and can damage buildings. Wood pigeons are better than feral pigeons but I wouldn't want them near my house, they shit everywhere.

LimitIsUp · 21/05/2023 21:05

Aww - wishing her all the best against the magpie incursions

what is it that kind of pigeon say?! 'My toe hurts betty, my toe hurts betty!'

I always hear "I can't fly, Judy. I can't fly Judy"

Will now be listening out for sore toes and Two-cow Davey.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/05/2023 21:59

Awww. Please up date us once her babies are here.

Chestnut12 · 21/05/2023 22:00

I love this thread! We have a wood pigeon pair that I started leaving seeds for. They come back every day now! I don’t know where their nest is!? They’re so big and fat and they come and stare in the window or fly around to make sure I see them (and bring more seeds)

does anyone remember this story I just loved it along with the top comment 😆 this thread reminded me of it! Can’t believe I remember it from over 10 years ago lol

Travelodge guest Rosie Shapter discovers pigeon under her bed... guarding egg and nest

Despite shooing the pigeon out the window in the Somerset hotel, she suffered a sleepless night as the determined bird cooed relentlessly on the window ledge outside as it pined for its egg inside.

@Chestnut12 Brilliant 🤣

InceyWinceySpidy · 21/05/2023 22:10

We are swamped with pigeons, plus deer and many other little animals that ravage our garden and cover it with poo. DC love it though. "Baby Derek" is a tiny muntjac who has taken residence in the rear hedge. "Fatboy" the squirrel ate his way through so much of the roof, we had to replaster.

Came on to echo pp, to ask, have you ever seen a baby pigeon? Squab is it? Imagine if Satan himself, were to reincarnate as some form of furious looking duckling.

WOODY for a name for a wood pigeon is ace. 😆albeit not hugely original!

EbonyRaven · 21/05/2023 22:29

WTF is that hairstyle that woman has?! 😆

misses point of thread..... 😬

stinkingbishop · 21/05/2023 22:43

I am so excited to share this thread with DD (11) in the morning, who is another pigeon obsessive. A kindly local gentleman has let her adopt two in his loft that we visit, and she also has Winky pictured here (named after heroic WWII pigeon) who is currently off at pigeon Hogwarts being trained for the summer races. They are beautiful and much maligned birds. Doves get all the good PR but, as DD points out, Noah must have sent out a pigeon, because doves don't come back...which makes the pigeon the bird of peace Halo
