seems not having shareholders isn't such a bad thing for customers. Fancy that ?

My husband and I both got the email 👏

I have a current account, that I opened over 30 years ago and a couple of savings accounts with them. My accounts don't qualify obvs 🤷‍♀️

DreamItDoIt · 19/05/2023 20:27

Sorry didn't read the thread, I haven't paid in the required amount for 2 months prior to 2023. Irrelevant obvs that I've paid in shit loads of money since I've banked with them!

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 19/05/2023 20:29

I got this lovely surprise email this morning and I also won £100 in their monthly prize draw (which I didn’t even know about) last year so I’m Nationwide’s biggest fan at the moment.

User14528564 · 19/05/2023 20:33

I didn't get it because although I have a current account to get my savings out it's not my main one so I didn't have enough going in and out of it, bit miffed as I have a lot of savings with them.

JamMakingWannaBe · 19/05/2023 20:22

We are the same. I've only got an email saying we'll get £100. How do you know you are both getting this payment?

The email has a terms and conditions link which tells you about joint accounts.

Same here

We all supposedly signed away our rights to windfall payments from building societies when it was de riguer in the 1990's to open accounts with a few pounds in order to get shares. I know people that had an account with 30+ building societies each with £100 in it. Then our rights on future new accounts supposedly went to charity if a building society ever privatised. This is not a privatisation of course today by Nationwide.

The most lucrative deal was the merger of Leamington Spa, with Cheltenham & Gloucester which merged into Lloyds eventually. Average account holders got a thousand or two if I remember correctly. One person I worked with then in the 1990's got £8,000.

My £100 will go to a social housing charity. On principle. Building Societies are there to provide finance for housing. Not to give windfall payments to ISA holders.

I appreciate my view may be unpopular.

Note: No Nationwide account holders or their animals were hurt in the above post production.

BarelyLiterate · 19/05/2023 20:37

Not before time. I’ve been a Nationwide member for decades. My current account & mortgage is with them.
Over the years they have removed almost all the perks which used to differentiate them from the banks. Interest on current accounts : gone. Free withdrawals of local currency from foreign ATMs : gone. Free European travel insurance: gone. The branch in my village : gone. Etc etc. It got to the point at which, from a customer’s perspective, there was no difference between them & HSBC etc, so it’s long overdue for them to start actually behaving like a mutual again.

woodhill · 19/05/2023 20:37

Thanks

I got it too😀

Been a customer for over 30 years, didn't get this so presumably I don't qualify. So, no, thus isn't about rewarding customers, they've clearly done their calcs and probably worked out how to get great publicity whilst giving the minimum out.

To be honest out if all the people I bank with their systems are the must antiquated.

This comes across as sour grapes - they're giving out £340 million to 3.4 million customers.

This is a very big giveaway.

SpaghettiSquash · 19/05/2023 20:42

I have several savings accounts with them and have done for years. My money has helped their profitability but I'm not eligible as I don't have a current account with them. Unimpressed. I'm going to go in and close my accounts tomorrow.

Lemursandions · 19/05/2023 20:46

Hmmm I have a current account, 2 savings accounts, 2 ISSs and a joint and haven’t had anything! Been with them for over 19 years

OddBoots · 19/05/2023 20:46

I am sure some people will close accounts over this, I am also sure others will open them or start more actively using accounts they already have in case they do this again next year or similar.

Yes to their systems being out of date, they are the only bank I'm aware of that still asks to use a flipping card reader!

Lemursandions · 19/05/2023 20:48

I tell a lie - it had gone to junk!

LittleBearPad · 19/05/2023 20:49

£100 to both DH and me which is a result!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/05/2023 20:50

Ah great news, just checked my emails and I'm getting it 🥳

katseyes7 · 19/05/2023 20:51

I've been a Nationwide customer for 50 years. Over those years l've had mortgages, a current account, and various savings accounts.
Just now l only have a current account which my occupational pension is paid into, so won't be eligible. Bit disappointed if l'm honest.

HealthConcerns · 19/05/2023 20:53

Haven't had an email. Does that mean I'm not entitled? Have 4 of the relevant products with them

katseyes7 · 19/05/2023 20:53

This. I bank with them and the Halifax, and the Nationwide online banking system is awful by comparison. Very clunky and old fashioned, when l view a statement, the most recent stuff is at the bottom of the page!
And l can't even add a new payee without going into a branch. In 2023....

LT2 · 19/05/2023 20:54

Kangarude · 19/05/2023 20:23

The criteria is a current account and either a savings or mortgage account. You need to have paid in £500 for at least 2 months priorate the end of March 2023.

😒 I returned from maternity leave in January. My employer forgot to pay me in January and February. Because of their mistake, looks like I don't qualify😡

Oblomov23 · 19/05/2023 20:54

Got ours. Seemed odd.

lightlypoached · 19/05/2023 20:54

I got that today. Nice surprise
